Re:Reports of cancellation of AdSense accounts on Wednesday July 06, 2016 @12:41AM (#12041251)
My account got deleted and i've spent over $7 in the last 2 years and disabled adverts this week and it got deleted. If I can't get my data back then doubt I'll ever use Adwords again...
Re:SoundCloud could be forced to close after $44m losses on Thursday February 11, 2016 @08:38AM (#11079994)
All my production buddies hate it. They pay full price, your the world and yet Soundcloud take down the tracks that they OWN. With no recourse or apology. Their system has been broken for 5 years at least for the power users in the community.

Also keep in mind that it is 10 standard drinks, so a bottle of wine quarter bottle of scotch. It goes to show how much alcoholics hide their drinking
Re:The Worst Part of YC on Friday April 18, 2014 @03:46AM (#7608338)
I guess it depends on if you think that things that boost behaviours inherently are included or if only software counts. I see it more akin to if some users submissions were automatically tweeted whereas others had to copy and paste.

I didnt realise they had taken out the alerts on their dashboards that led to YC members being picked up by the vote ring detection.

Re:The Worst Part of YC on Wednesday April 16, 2014 @09:45PM (#7601602)
this is exactly what I was referring to
Re:The Worst Part of YC on Wednesday April 16, 2014 @09:41PM (#7601594)
This is what I was talking about: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5025168

Their comments show up as Orange to other members, I would imagine that this would boost the amount of upvotes and assume that they would never get shadow banned etc.

The fact that this comment got pretty much the most number of downvotes on my account may indicate that these posts do get attention. The fact that YC can see submitters voting history etc might also play into it.

Re:The Worst Part of YC on Tuesday April 15, 2014 @10:01PM (#7595603)
YC employees have boosted stats, it makes sense to me as this is their business
Nice one DT!
Re:Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses? on Sunday March 09, 2014 @07:28AM (#7368167)
Probably because the adverts that are blocked pay for the site. Kind of like asking musicians for zippy share links to their music.
How can they set a price without having a price for IP?

If a lightbulb kickstarter hadnt contacted a factory before coming up with how much it would cost for production then we'd be riding their asses

Re:Zynga Lays Off 15% of Its Workforce on Friday January 31, 2014 @07:42AM (#7156371)
There are a few things here that I can see are overhead.

- It was an established design consultancy, that takes time and money to create.

- They charge the customer 3x what they paid you, but you dont know if the customer paid up. The had a contract, but then so did you, and you only got 8% of the bonus. You got pad your wage regardless of if they got paid.

- The pulled in the big client, this is almost important as a solo contractor, its their reputation on the line if you mess up. Its really hard to get those contracts or you need to have a contact. It's not uncommon for sales people to make 30% on big sales to land the contract on good terms.

- You did all the work, but could they have employed someone else, or are you the only person that could do it?

- Did they pay for health insurance, sick days etc?

- Have you thought about suing for your bonus?

Re:WP Engine Raises $15M on Wednesday January 15, 2014 @12:25AM (#7061812)
you get better terms this way and is a way to shut out competitors that are considering entering your space (because they know you can burn money to stop them getting traction)

If you NEED money, you will find it harder to get

Re:Mini Tablet Display Technology Shoot-Out on Thursday November 28, 2013 @02:04AM (#6813414)
Yes. People don't purchase the iPad alone, but for the ecosystem. I moved to Android but just bought an iPad as it has an App I need for work that isnt available on any Tablet OS. Thats why theyre able to do it and still win over the others.
Re:Mini Tablet Display Technology Shoot-Out on Thursday November 28, 2013 @02:00AM (#6813402)
may be the only technology they could get for the price/quantity. At the end of the day most people dont care if they screen is 20% better, they want the functionality
What is the difference in:

free trial -> paid subscription?

It says 25% increase in revenue but presumably you have lowered your margins?

Re:How the .0001% Made Its Money on Tuesday October 15, 2013 @10:57AM (#6553560)
Nice detective work
Xero was started by someone involved with MYOB. MYOB's software is a nightmare for SMB's, so they probably started there as small businesses are happy to put their finances in the cloud. Once they grow their businesses out I can imagine Xero will grow with those businesses (ie payroll). Xero seem to be embracing API hooks into other systems too, very smart play as they can potentially include things like payroll etc etc later down the track.
Devices don't cause much interference with these machines, same as hospitals. Doctors always have their phones on. Within about 1 metre might cause some interference. Maybe.

I heard that the reason they tell you to turn it off in flight is so that if something goes wrong people panic less. Not sure how true that is though.

I think this is a bit of a pivot from their business at Quote Roller
Re:How we got to $1,000 in recurring revenue on Monday September 09, 2013 @01:43AM (#6352038)
For the people that are complaining about this point of view, remember that this is a PAYING customer who is currently $600 a year for the service. I assume that most people saying not to drop the price are not paying users of this service.

I agree that you should not take into account the fact that most people say taht software is too expensive, but I think that you should also take onto account when people would prefer to "roll their own" than pay for your services as it also demonstrates that you dont have a "lock in" effect and so cant charge a lot more than what the product is worth to a customer.

It will be interesting to see how the new design of iOS 7 goes with this in mind.

Re:Shutting Down a Dream on Thursday August 08, 2013 @04:09AM (#6177801)
I would encourage you to start charging customers or to find another monetisation strategy for it, unless youre getting mmassive traction you arent a aquisition target and if its nice but free then it may never make money.
