> Because housing is essential to life does not mean it should double in price every ten years.

I agree, and didn’t mean to imply that the price rising is inherent to these services. What I should have spelled out is that a capitalist market can only self regulate when the buyer has the ability to say no. Largely a customer of health, housing and food has limited ability to opt out.

His interpretation of “industries that are allowed to innovate vs those where it’s illegal” is laughable.

Has Marc considered that there might be some other fundamental difference between the inflation-positive sectors of health, education, food and housing, vs the inflation-negative ones of TVs, cars and software subscriptions? I’ll give you a hint Marc: some of these are essential to life and society and some are not.

Re:A Senior Engineer's Guide to the System Design Interview on Thursday March 02, 2023 @08:51PM (#35004823)
The flaw in this argument is assuming that you could do a good job of diagramming a system without describing the use cases of the system. My web dev skills are not proprietary, but the processes and systems I have worked on are.
Re:Poll: Do you use anti-virus software on desktop Linux? on Thursday January 26, 2023 @08:08PM (#34541208)
Would love to hear from the "I don't think we need it on Linux" folks. What is it about antivirus that we don't need? Is it the wrong solution to securing a workstation?
Re:Wickr shutting down December 31, 2023 on Saturday November 19, 2022 @07:44PM (#33676802)
Kind of infuriating that the blog post doesn't mention what "Wickr Me" is. The link in the page footer to "Wickr Me" only goes back to the same blog post.
Do you have a recommendation for a better alternative?
That's not true. https://status.heroku.com shows that the incident is ongoing, that they've disabled the GitHub integration, and don't have plans to reenable it until full assessment is complete
Parent comment made no evaluation of their own ability, so I don’t see how it’s DK in effect at all.

Yes. If that was an audio interface too it would be a no brainer.
Or just “items”
Twice seems smart. Too risky for a single click
For those of us who haven't, could you explain why?
Re:HTML5 Does Not Exist on Saturday June 26, 2021 @01:28AM (#27639354)
The linked article doesn’t support your editorialised title. I think what you’re trying to say is that it’s not a standard. It’s still a useful term to describe a set of modern web standards and features.
That video is dreadful. How can the producer equate owning nothing with "socialism, communism and totalitarianism" when this is the effect that we're seeing under capitalism?

The documentarian shouldn’t be required to provide an answer or an alternative. Their job is to present material and it’s up to us to respond.

In fact what I _really_ dislike about Netflix documentaries is how heavy-handed they are with the solutions that they dictate, James Cameron’s veganism propaganda being the most obvious example - completely coincidental that he owns a plant-based protein manufacturing company

If you search /r/unpopularopinion or /r/changemyview you’ll find plenty of examples of such topics being discussed.

Discourse has this too. The author mentions discounting this due to the primary focus on linear discussion.
Re:AI thinks like a corporation (2018) on Tuesday February 04, 2020 @05:33PM (#22241811)
I can't think of the definition of AI you could be using to say the autopilot is an AI. Autopilot didn't teach itself to fly the plane - it was explicitly programmed to do so.
Re:Tract: A Hugo theme for ambitious documentation projects on Tuesday December 03, 2019 @12:14AM (#21690117)
I think they're saying the opposite of that; they're biased against Hugo or generally vocal in their criticism of it.
Re:AWS Data Exchange on Wednesday November 13, 2019 @06:03PM (#21530728)
As a consumer of a paid dataset, how would I trust that the vendor is publishing accurate and complete data?
Out of interest, could you give us a rough idea of the scope of a 2-hour take home exercise for a front end position?
Re:OP-Z Synthesizer on Thursday May 23, 2019 @02:01AM (#19988905)
The battery is replaceable, not sure that it's a big concern. I'd kill to see open documented bindings for wireless interaction, as well as the ability to write custom synth engines, but really doesn't appear to be the direction for them.
Re:Economics of Spotify is making songs shorter on Sunday January 20, 2019 @07:35PM (#18956620)
The tiny data points presented in the article do not justify the strongly worded title
Re:You Can’t Do Data Science in a GUI on Sunday April 15, 2018 @08:01PM (#16845754)
The article doesn't seem to address the question in the title. Why would they be mutually exclusive?
Re:URL to PDF Microservice on Thursday October 05, 2017 @07:10PM (#15413271)
Yeah literally need to add an invoice subtotal for the items on that page
Re:URL to PDF Microservice on Thursday October 05, 2017 @04:56PM (#15412516)
I would like to adopt something like this, but there are some pretty normal table functions in our current print solution that I don't know how to support in HTML.

E.g. on a multi-page invoice, show a sub-total row at the bottom of each page. Does anyone know how to create this kind of function?
