It's possible that some (many?) programmers enjoy a Ruby-like syntax?
Re:Apple Cancels AirPower Product on Friday March 29, 2019 @07:31PM (#19526493)
I wouldn't either but now that I have one one my desk, nightstand, and coffee table; I could never go back.
Re:Great Barrier Reef headed for ‘massive death’ on Saturday August 25, 2018 @11:47PM (#17844131)
That's a bit relativistic; no? How could something that dies at a mere gram of arsenic have survived for so long?
Re:How Slack Stays Secure During Hyper Growth on Friday January 19, 2018 @10:50PM (#16191950)
Honest question, do you think a 2x factor of error is all that significant? Maybe it's just my EE background (where everything is measured in logs) but anything within an order of magnitude seems accurate enough for me.
Do you have any links I could peruse that explain how UBI would flatten the demand curve, rather than just shifting it?
> No, pitbulls are not sweet. Pitbulls are unpredictable monsters.

Do you have any direct experience with a well-loved, housebroken pitbull? In all my experiences with the breed, the only thing they're aggressive about is snuggling. /anecdata

Is the system setup to value them with money? Can a parent walk into a school and agree to higher property taxes if their kid is placed in a specific teacher's classroom?
Perhaps it's possible that digital marketing is not all that effective for commodity items?

I admit to having brand preferences for laundry detergent and garbage bags, though I like to believe (perhaps wishfully) they are a result of first-hand and family experiences.

I've contemplated using a service like this to lighten the junk mail, but how do you 'shut off' mail service at your physical mailbox?
Re:Charts That Scare Wall Street on Friday October 28, 2016 @01:46AM (#12813410)
Agreed, though it wasn't very long ago that growth was valued much higher than profitability. Maybe our opinion is (slowly) evolving? Perhaps growth-by-all-means is a perfectly valid play in an extremely network-effected market, while other markets might be better served by focusing on profitability?
Re:Machine Learning and Ketosis on Saturday August 13, 2016 @01:57AM (#12280457)
Congrats on finding on a solution that works for your body. For me, I find eating keto gives me more even energy, allows me to sleep better, keeps me from feeling hungry, and I also lose weight.

Humans are pretty diverse; perhaps certain eating patterns work better for different body chemistries.

Absolutely this. All comp evaluations should start from what you could reasonably expect (salary + annualized stock) at a public company.

Startup comp is a little different; salary + the value of equity at (a reasonable) exit (but derated by a healthy 80%, because 80% of all startups fail, right?) It might also be wise to discount for any difference in preferred shares vs. common stock.

This might just be my personal experience, but I feel like a lot of people don't derate startup equity for (the statistically expected) failure correctly.

Re:The 39th Root of 92 on Sunday August 07, 2016 @04:58AM (#12241522)
Wouldn't a much more natural unit for angular measurements be 1/(2*pi)? That way angular measurements are represented as their fraction of a circle (which is pretty easy to visualize; 180 degrees becomes 1/2.)
Re:One Kind of Diversity Colleges Avoid on Wednesday April 20, 2016 @02:29AM (#11532633)
And your refute is an appeal to the masses or an appeal to authority depending on your tastes. Many intelligent people believe in conservative/libertarian ideals.

When considering solutions to tough problems, why exclude any class of thought?

> radio is a shitty channel through which to market your podcast

Maybe I'm just not the average NPR listener, but any time I have terrestrial radio playing, I'm highly subject to interruptions (eg., the end of my drive, a meeting during my workday, etc.) I always almost find an opportunity to resume the broadcast (via podcast) helpful.

Re:Why Copenhagen Has Almost Perfect Water on Thursday December 24, 2015 @11:36PM (#10790433)
Not to say your analysis is flawed, but SFPUC rounds everyone's water usage to the nearest 'unit' (748 gallons) meaning that anyone who uses less than 748 gallons/month is paying at least €8.05/kiloliter (based on my consistent $25/one-unit bill.)

As a single guy, I consume nowhere near my allocated 748 gallons/month, meaning my effective rate is even higher.

Does anyone know if there is a PAC aligned around technology-savy candidates? Seems like something the EFF should be involved in.
Re:U.S. Navy Deploys First Laser Weapon in Persian Gulf on Saturday November 15, 2014 @02:21AM (#8611110)
Both this and all the railgun technology the Navy has been developing. Undoubtedly part of the reason the new Zumwalt class destroyers are electric drive.
There is probably some merit in the season model that American television takes. "I'm going to release 12/18/24/whatever episodes over the next six/eight/twelve months" is probably more sustainable than a weekly screencast pledge. Gives the author some time off to recharge, and (perhaps more importantly) some time for technology to evolve.
> You left a free lunch on the table.

You appear to be discrediting opportunity costs (could those 30 minutes of researching brackets be better spent doing something practical?) and privacy costs (I'm sure Buffet's entries required a certain amount of personal information.)

Re:It Is Time For Basic Income on Saturday March 22, 2014 @01:11AM (#7447760)
In fairness, don't most situations in life?
Re:The Wallaby Card on Thursday November 14, 2013 @11:20PM (#6737728)
This looks like it work great for optimizing/consolidating personal cards, but one advantage Coin offers is the flexibility of charging normal purchases to a business account. I'm not sure how Wallaby could discriminate if my restaurant meal or office supplies are a business expense or just personal use.

Either way I'm all for any innovation that thins out the number of cards in my wallet (with the goal being zero.)

Re:The Navy’s newest warship is powered by Linux on Friday October 18, 2013 @12:42PM (#6572331)
Modern warships are designed for EMP threats. It's mentioned in MIL-STD-464.
Re:The Navy’s newest warship is powered by Linux on Friday October 18, 2013 @12:24PM (#6572204)
As I understand it, the DAPs run LynxOS, while the TSCEI networking and processing is done in Red Hat.
I like seeing new players in this space. I think there's a lot of potential for small-group or 1-on-1 mentoring to help fill the "intermediate but beyond tutorials" space. Kind of like golf, or surfing lessons, only perhaps with some investment on return.
Re:Show HN: Floobits – Remote pair programming done right on Thursday July 18, 2013 @11:26PM (#6068143)
I think this use-case has a lot of potential.

As someone who's past tutorials, yet not quite confident enough to seek employment with my hobby language, I'd love some small-group or individual pairing experience (sort of like golf or skiing lessons, only for programmers.) As long as the cost for facilitating this is reasonable, I wouldn't have a problem paying for it.

Re:Colemak keyboard layout on Sunday July 07, 2013 @02:34AM (#6001270)
I switched to Dvorak 11+ years when I was in college and had a lot of time to kill. I think your spoken language fluency analogy is pretty accurate; I imagine I'll always retain a bit of my 'native' qwerty muscle-memory, but the more I practice it, the easier it is to make the mental 'switch' between languages.

That said, if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't switch to Dvorak. The efficiency gained on my keyboard layout does not offset the efficiency lost on shared computers.

Re:Show HN: Too busy for online dating? Try Wednesday Night on Thursday June 06, 2013 @12:38AM (#5830471)
Just to give you one user's perspective (which honestly, by virtue of being a HN reader probably represents a very small fraction of general users); anytime I see a service that requests I login via FB or Google, I assume you're trying to mine my personal data. Unless you are Facebook, or Google, or maybe LinkedIn (with whom I'm already willing to share my personal data) I'm not going to use these options. Make this your only option and I'm going to close the tab.

No personal offense to you, or your business. Just telling you as a geek, this is a non-starter for me.

Re:Breaking News is broken on Saturday April 20, 2013 @04:18PM (#5582655)
When your job is to get people to pay attention to you, why would categorize anything as less than the most important? Crowd-sourcing the importance might be better, but that brings us right back to a HN/reddit solution.
