Re:Ask HN: What feature phone do you use and recommend? on Monday August 16, 2021 @07:45PM (#28204325)
I use the cheap new motorola models, currently motorola 2020 model e,

Motorola usually has a model they market as the "best cheap android" phone, usually runs for about $100-$200 dollars. They arent very repairable in design, but is doable as tutorials are offered online, authorized repair shops can fix the phones but it costs about the value of a new device. Parts can be purchased relativly cheaply online if you are up for the challenge of fixing it yourself.

Re:Ask HN: Should I even bother competing for React jobs? on Saturday August 14, 2021 @05:01PM (#28183909)
I assume Canada job circumstances would differ slightly than US, also less opportunities i assume so i agree your plan of looking at US makes sense,

Just a note, in the US, my understanding is most companies are not planning on offshoring most jobs overseas even though they are remote jobs basically in the short term. We all do expect more of that to happen in the future though.

My company is US has a deal with the city its in, the state its in as well. Even though we are all remote now (except for the hardware people), all of the employees are expected to live in a commutable distance to the office so post covid going back to work will be a thing.

I think companies get tax breaks and have agreements with municipalities to bring jobs to an area.

Re:Ask HN: Should I even bother competing for React jobs? on Friday August 13, 2021 @03:52PM (#28173724)
Il just assume you are in the US market. Sounds like you need some guidance on the interview process, you might be applying to the wrong type of jobs, you might want to be more selective/directed with your approach/goals. Maybe you are unable to adequatly prepare for interviews due to your current day job. You should have a plan, how long you can practice interviewing before running out of money, and then go from there. Maybe you can try get a less physically taxing day job so you can study/practice more after work until you get a great dev job.

Ive interviewed for some basic software engineer roles in the US NY region with Node in the last 2 years that basically just wanted basic JS experience to work there without any production Node experience. No 8 hour tests, just general discussions, and build a CRUD app that handles X type of object.

Programs like Outco(costs money) exist to help software engineers improve their interviewing skills/try get more money in their next job, even if they are experts with great experience they take these classes because interviewing can be hard for some devs.

If i were you i would spend a day or two researching the current state of interviewing for JS/react roles. Its a big market, lots of devs talking about succeeding in it online.

Start talking to currently employed software engineers for specific advice on your current issues. Fish for referrels, this is the biggest way companies hire nowadays in US in my opinion.

Re:Ask HN: How to deal with coccyx pain while sitting? on Thursday August 12, 2021 @10:14AM (#28156628)
A big part of it ia genetically being predisposed to it. I read a few horror stories of people that get them every 6 months, or people that get surgeries and the surgeries fail to fix issues,

But glad to hear you havnt had issues since 30 years!

Re:Ask HN: How to deal with coccyx pain while sitting? on Thursday August 12, 2021 @12:08AM (#28151784)
I had an issue like a year ago, luckily all is well now. I got a pilonatal cyst which is gross (dont google images of it) but it is a relativly common tailbone ailment caused by sitting to much and just being predisposed to it. Its also called Jeep butt, because soldiers in WW2 riding jeeps on bumps roads would get this issue commonly.

Lifestyle changes ive made to try prevent from occuring in the future:

-Walk around the block before work,

-Walk around the block lunch break,

-Long walk/run after work.

-Weight loss

-Dont hesitate to get up and walk around as often as you want (keep the blood pumping!)

I dont sit on a chair at computer after work hours. I do on the weekends to program stuff, but monday-friday i dont sit at my computer after work, and il sit on couch rather than chair if i can on weekends. My issues really arose when i was working on a coding project after work hours (majority waking hours was in the chair working), gained like 20 pounds over a year, reduced my exercise frequency, my primary care doc mentioned these all could contribute.

I also wear very lose shorts during the day to orevent my waistband from screwing up my posture, but maybe once we get stuffed back into the office we wont be able to do that anymore.

I dont really think of my higher up colleagues as smart or dumb, i think that some of them have relevant experience and some dont really, and different managers have different personalities which is what impacts trying to work together to solve a problem.

For example, some managers like to give you their proposed plan without wanting any input, these people require pushing back in some situations, you could call it poor emotional intelligence, other managers are much more open to suggestions considering me and the underlings will be doing the work, even though managers inital plan is often correct as previous experience justifies their proposed solution.

But yea i dont really doubt the intelligence of people really unless they continue to repeat mistakes and fail to remedy those mistakes.

Re:Ask HN: Which Android smartphone to get now in 2021? on Thursday July 29, 2021 @01:15AM (#27992999)
I like the new motorolas, i have a moto e, <200$ off amazon, they are almost always running heavy promotions and have models for 200$ with decent performance, some are designed so you cant take the battery out which is frustrating but you can fix stuff if your patient/know how to follow YT tutorials.
Wikis often get cited in political debates with USA friends, i also think most of the political related subjects are consistently left leaning much like academic thought leaders.

But for non-political subjects, wiki is still great IMO.

Re:Ask HN: How would you monetize HN? on Monday July 19, 2021 @03:18AM (#27880041)
Merchandise.. (stickers, coffee mugs...)

Selling coupons to devs for money from merchants would be cool...

Re:“One Day Longer and Those 13 Boys Would Be Dead” on Saturday July 10, 2021 @02:51PM (#27795559)
Yea this sounded pretty strange to me,

Im aware sedation slows breathing down, so some oxygen can be saved if human attached to tank is not hyperventilating for hours,

Pretty crazy the kids were sedated and hands bound and feet tied!

I think if you are going to start as a software dev in a role where you wont be interacting with management or clients, your stellar business experience wont be utilized, and you would be downgrading your career tragectory,

If you are able to secure a software dev job with mostly management - interacting with clients or VPs and management - you will be able to utilize your previous busienss experience. I'm not exactly sure what type of role that is, so thats something you will have to explore further, but im sure there are roles that fall into this category.

A lot of the IT consulting firms need good engineers who will interact with client dev leadership/client business leadership, that sounds like a role that might be a good fit, but the IT consulting firms really need good people who are willing to work their tails off in those roles if you are up for it.

I was at a bank/credit card company as a software dev, we were always just warned about it being a cluster fuck for business people that have to make a lot of excel reports due to those kind of issues.

From my perspective, if a client(like a porn co) repeatedly had high rates of charge backs, fraud teams are aware of that being possible fraud, business teams know that its causing a clusterfuck and might be losing the bank/cc company money, so its easier just not to support that client so less work has to be done.

I dont think anyone likes the fact that US minimum wage is so low. Seeimg the higher wage offers has been pleasant, but not being able to go in restaurants because they have been unable to hire enough staff hasnt been.

Mcdonalds + Amazon wont be a victim of minumum wage laws, they advocate for high minumum wages, as less productive chains and small businesses with smaller margins will have to die off to allow for more mcdonalds and amazon.

It is sad how expensive some parts of the country are, and the minimum wage "should" be higher, but ive seen economists say raising minum wage hurts low income earners looking for their first job (disproportionatly bipoc people), increases prices for everything, increases govt beurocracy, and simply doesnt work as a simple fix.

Fed govt set aside cash during covid pandemic to give extra funds to people on unemployment. At the beginning of the pandemic all the states particapated, but not anymore.

Critics have accused the fed govt of irresponsibly rolling this out as the economy has rebounded, and now you have many states where businesses are struggling to find workers who want to apply for these low income jobs because unemployment + 300$(fed govt bonus) + tax benfifits > low income job. So basically 21 states stopped giving unemployed people that extra 300$, and surprise surprise, american workers are rational and more of them elected to go back to work compared to the states that still distribute that 300$.

Basically this isnt surprising, but people on the far right want to gut bloated unemployment programs and far left wants universal income + bigger welfare for nonemployed americans, and this is playing out in Washington DC now and in states accross the US who arent one party states.

There are a number of reasons why someone loses unemployment eligbability, time being one of those as you alluded to. Varies state by state.

I beleive some states like NY and Cali have extended unemployment benfifits to like September, other states probably vary.

Re:Ask HN: Show us your WFH setup on Thursday June 24, 2021 @10:17AM (#27617837)
Nice
I had two bad hotel stays in big US cities during peak covid pandemic, 2 hotels in DC had taken in people who needed housing so smoking could be smelled in the building, cleaning crews were not running at full capacity, bars/restaurants closed, i had two overpriced airbnbs around the northeast that were good experiences.
My buddy buys broken Iphones/screens and sells them to China where all the underlying parts are stripped and used for repairing Iphones. This is legitamite not shady at all.

Ships hundreds at a time. A lof of the parts used for repair in China are coming from US/EU broken phones.

Re:Ask HN: How to spend Learning (L&D) Budget of USD 1000? on Wednesday April 28, 2021 @05:16PM (#26974319)
Im in a similar boat, most things are free to learn online unless you want to buy textbooks, so the only thing left is certificates and learning courses with teachers. Not sure i want to commit my free time studying for those things.

I told my company i was going to get a certificate but never did and free time programing has been spent freelancing/learning random stuff.

Re:Ask HN: Maybe I'm just not smart enough? on Thursday April 22, 2021 @09:37AM (#26902558)
I was a subpar non-engineering student at college, never exceleed in any academic pursuit.

Didnt know what i wanted to do with my life for career, ended up wasting 4 years of my life working dead end jobs, then transitioned into software engineering, much happier now.

I would reccomend you write down a timeline, how many years are you willing to study/attempt to become a X, or get X job, before you would be okay giving up with that goal and doing plan B instead. Work your butt off until that timeline expires, and then, if you gave your best effort, you can be proud of your attempt but it simply wasnt in the cards for you.

Sounds like you've already been able to get some interviews for the positions you desire.

if i were you i would set a goal to apply to many more desirable positions, consider widening the scope of what a desirable position is to you. I would set a goal of applying to ten internships/jobs a day, even if these roles arent the ideal positions, your interview skills will improve and maybe youll be able to set up a job/internship to train you/pay you while you attempt to improve your skills in non-work hours.

Sounds like you have a confidence problem as well, dont check IQ tests online.

I beleive russias economy isnt doing so great. I would attempt to plan venturing into EU, USA, or some other better job market post-uni, lots of people do that after uni because their home countries lacked opportunities! Both my parents did.

Best of luck!

Roland Fryer mentioned this a while ago while discussing his paper on racial dispartiies in police use of force last year in a YT interview, he predicted an increase of felonies (100k's of felonies including 60k additional shootings i beleive were the numbers he used), due to 2020 politicans endorsing anti-police protests + large protests.

a big correlation for the uptick in crime he argued was related to politicans endorsing protesting controvercial police incidents + protests, which historically is assosciated with significant sharp upticks in crime.

https://scholar.harvard.edu/fryer/publications/empirical-ana...

We do have the ability to do sql db dumps but usually dont as that would be pretty time consuming i assume, if i am about to do something that could potentially screw up dev environment db, i would just tell my manager and lead dev of the sprint before hand and check which dba is available beforehand to undue my changes if things start breaking.

Mongo dumps are much easier to do so i do dump mongo onto local.

I think watching youtube videos together on the black plague, polio, measles, or 1918 flu epidemic would be a good place to start while having a rational discussion throughout watching.

I think its also important to educate/comprimise with them, assuming they are young healthy adults, agree that covid likely isnt really a short term risk to their well beings, but that they are indirectly very real threat vectors to those that are immunocomprised like our neighbors who have diabetes, or grandparents, etc.

If you can get them to admit that they dont want to get vaccinated because they dont want a needle in their arm and drive an hour driving to the hospital and are young and healthy, aka laziness, i think that can help lead to the selfrealization that not getting vaccinated is a selfish, neurotic move, in the middle of a pandemic when lots of already comprimised or older people are dying.

Re:Ask HN: What is your low stress, high paid job? on Saturday January 23, 2021 @07:12AM (#25881685)
Im a software dev at a big non profit, pretty chill, learning a lot, low stress, mix of old and new tech, freedom to ask for more or less work/what type of projects i want to work on, deployments are biweekly at normal times (not like at a bank i was at previously where they were like 10pm-3am because of India time zone lol)

i realistically have about 2-3 years relevant experience, making around 100k. im aware if i study/prepare i could prob get an offer from a FAANG for >150k which i prob will do in a few months tho for the prestige/brand.

my manager has a lot more on his plate, but said in the last three years theres only been one day when hes had to work after 5pm due to a software emergency, so staying at current company is pretty appealing, but id like a pay raise when i hit my year mark so that will effect things.

Oue team of 5 devs is usually working 930-6 on a daily basis though, i usually work 9-5 tho.

Re:Ask HN: Why are charts in Google Sheets so unintuitive? on Saturday January 16, 2021 @05:00PM (#25805917)
As someone who never really spent the time to learn Excel or Sheets, ive found when I have to do something more complicated then importing a CSV in either system, Sheets is usually easier to do than Excel. Usually though, before im able to finish work in Sheets, a teamate who is a pro in excel will show me how to do in Excel as more of our business users want excel reports anyway.

I think in 2021 there are still way more power users of Excel, and Excel is more important to more of Microsofts customers so they spend money to make it better. Lets remember, how many more 10s of thousands of devs work on Excel compared to Sheets? I want to say i remember seeing a news story that said microsoft was hiring an additional 25k or 36,000 devs to work on Excel.

I would have to google how to make a pivot table :)

yea it sounds like a reasonable IT person at Parler would suggest preparing for getting booted off these big tools (aws, twilio, etc.) considering Parler sounds like exactly the type of product that would get kicked off these services.

One of the founders of pirate bay had a tweetstorm recently where he was like, i get that aws kicked u guys off, but like, u guys cant get a homepage up and running? I agree with this guy.

parlor was founded with politics in mind, maybe they are ok with shutting down their community because in a way that serves their political goals, sounds like parlor and aws are already suing eachother, i dont doubt uber-conservative users will find an alternative platform to use in the coming weeks.

Im an employee at a company (400 employees US) has an article in internal homepage suggesting all employees do, executives do it, most employees dont though
Wiki says Parler is a team of 30 people,

So realistically, does that mean like 10 devs running a social network with 5-10 million users?

I imagine its pretty ceazy there right now after getting booted off AWS, google just banned u off play store, so cant use them, i assume they cant use microsoft because theyll ban them there as well, it would be cool to see if they are able to get things up and running again. (Ive never used Parler but i assume its just like a simple Facebook type webpage/apps)

Re:Looking to get my foot in the door as a Python developer on Monday January 04, 2021 @11:48PM (#25642227)
In regards to struggling to get interviews,

Look for devs who have the job you want, start talking to them asking for advice, ask them for advice on what to learn next, ask them to look over a personal project of yours for advice, i would also suggest you talk to someone about your resume, if you arent getting any hits with your resume, you need to improve it and some people are really good at providing advice here to make you look more appealing as a candidate despite your lack of 50 years of experience,

you should be applying to lots of jobs on a daily basis. when i was job hunting i would spend half the day studying and half of the day applying to jobs.

in regards to working for free:

i would look for established companies' or open source library tutorials, look for bugs by completing the tutorials, look for low hanging fruit open issues that you are able to fix, fix them, thats your free work and you will learn in this process

i made minor PRs on tutorials on oktas website, microsoft, and netlify, one big company said thats why they invited me to interview overbother candidates.

Youll deal with lots of no's, but remember all you need is one yes, so just keep studying and improving in the meantime

I transitioned from telemarketing into software development so i feel your pain :)

Best of luck
