Off the street you better have narcan ready. You'll still get dangerous stuff in pressies but last I read (old and sober these days) there is a glut of cheap high quality product when you get closer to the source. Supply path optimization ;0

dont forget buying drugs ;)
speaker controls the floor. republicans dont have to even let debate happen. the only way to force a vote is discharge petition.

but then the speaker also controls the schedule so republicans will just shut it down and not work for 2 months to avoid the vote.

Re:After 28 years walking across the globe, he's almost home on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:07PM (#50296862)
This walk is fairly tame in risk of death. Not so much in time lost as a dad.

This is a very common archetype though: dad of young kids does risky outside adventure for self-aggrandizement > dies.

the upcoming doc Everest: The Other Side will be fascinating.

Hilaree Nelson & Jim Morrison had a pretty crazy expedition goal. Then she dies while training to do it together.

He continues on anyways.

A bit of nuance: IIRC he previously lost his ex and kids in a horrible non-mountaineering car crash.

But IIRC Hilaree had children she left behind.

The film looks beautiful though.

Which is part of the problem... The inspired by jimmy's cinematography -> alex's feats -> become a wannabe amateur free solo father who dies is well established by now lol

My dad is friends with one of the main rabbis in JH. has done probably 20+ "He died doing what he loved" speeches, as the wife and kids sob and are left with no income stream.

I had no idea that was originally from seinfeld! The Schitts Creek version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCP27_vquxQ&t=26s
except it's also stipulating that the paper supplier upon which the orders are signed also cant use anthropic. or the table maker. even though the AI helping make sleeker paper and tables has nothing to do with deciding what to bomb (analogy breaking down lol)

and trump admin originally went WAY further.

they originally said the pen, paper, table etc suppliers cant use anthropic even for products and subsidiaries that have nothing to do with their govt work; far beyond the supply chain of the pen (bomb). Mega Corp Pepsi Co Taco Bell Inc. LLC -> Staples > Pen Co. Sure pen co might be reasonabale. But telling taco bell they cant have claude help expand the baja-blast-radius is way too far. that would be just like secondary sanctions.

iirc there are 2 court cases. one ruled the original order was too broad and i think that still stands? so at least it's narrowed slightly to just the immediate supply chain?

but ianal

Already happening. They're pissed abortion is up. These alt-right/christian nationalists are trying to force their <s>'morals'</s> on the rest of us

"She Got an Abortion. So A Texas Cop Used 83,000 Cameras to Track Her Down"

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/05/she-got-abortion-so-te...

it gets worse federally.

"Blanche assures anti-abortion supporters that Dobbs will be ‘permanent in every single state’"

https://www.politico.com/news/2026/08/03/blanche-pledged-abo...

So what happens when they use cameras outside of usps to crate pretext so a crazy alt right state judge issues a warrant under the assumption that you picked up pills in the mail?

"AG nominee tells faith leaders he will take action to restrict abortion drug access"

https://stateline.org/2026/08/04/ag-nominee-tells-faith-lead...

And relevant to interstate weed, what about kava, peptides, 7oh? they literally have million+ plus stakes in pushing drugs. Even when it means blocking worse drugs (7oh) so they can push slightly less addictive but still harmful garbage.

"Senate inquiry suggests Trump administration softened kratom and tobacco policies in quid pro quo"

https://www.statnews.com/2026/08/05/senator-ron-wyden-invest...

"Trump Administration’s Fake Crackdown Leaves Most ‘Gas Station Heroin’ on the Shelves. According to March 2026 financial disclosures, Mullin invested between $500,001 and $1 million in Botanic Tonics, LLC, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, the company that makes Feel Free Classic – the tonic found in the victim’s bedroom. Mullin reportedly urged officials to remove language from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website warning of kratom’s harms."

It's all disgusting. Their voters deserve these consequences.

But they're forcing the rest of us to suffer.

Re:Free the Icons on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @02:26PM (#48751171)
The abandonment of their own guidelines is sad. Great post below visually outlines how they've totally funked macos drop downs.

Too many icons you can't focus, inconsistent color, icons are unclear, repeated, or have 10 versions of an icon to 'add new folder' or other actions across their own apps.

at least iOS has great features. Surfacing them though.. I regularly learn new ones from tiktok. For instance i just learned about the motion sickness dots.

Re:The internet wants to check your ID on Wednesday August 06, 2025 @04:13PM (#44817137)
There is definitely a thread globally.

Plenty of these groups pushing these laws are already publicly linked via $ and staffer revolving door: DonorsTrust -> SPN -> ALEC -> CLI -> Heritage -> $ from Dunn & Wilks and other christian millionaires -> continue the circle etc. [6, 7]

Their playbook - which is sadly working:

- far right christian anti-porn, anti-lgbtq crusaders use 'child safety' or revenge porn to organize public outrage and direct that pressure on the choke point of payment processing. For example the writer of the viral pornhub article worked for anti-porn christian group that also helped pass extreme anti lgbtq laws in africa, such as Uganda's gays “should be castrated” insanity [1] - Recent Australian version of this same story. Again, the buried lede is going after queer content (not by accident) [2] - Same in the UK: ADF creates UK branch. CARE, Christin Concern, etc. Same anti-porn, anti-lgbt. Same tactics and messaging. Also throw in anti-abortion. [3, 4] - Groups like Heritage & ALEC & SPN put out the blueprint and write the actual laws. Copy paste across red states. For instance Project 2025 advocates sending porn producers to jail & again backdoors targeting of Trans and queer people [8]. Another example in Tennessee [5]: define drag as adult only. impose narrow worldview that any gender expression not assigned at birth is wrong and adult only (pornagraphic). Just throw away 1a and dare scotus to blink on law 'loopholes' with private right of action b.s.

It's all just to inflict their christian worldview and 'morals' on the rest of us.

You know the porn thing is just a b.s. excuse to get their foot in the door because only a couple of large companies like Aylo (formerly Mindgeek) comply. They are the only porn sites with the $ and morals to actually moderate in the first place.

Whilst the other 99% of the internet is just an open stream of content with no care & no humans in the loop.

Therefore it's all just virtue signaling at best, and personally I see a very organized sinister plot to impose christian rule. Could you imagine if it was a muslim group organizing at this scale? Sharia anyone?

Re:Fork in the Road on Tuesday January 28, 2025 @11:54PM (#42861705)
Yes. I sadly agree with obama: we can survive 4 years. I don't know we can survive 8.

“I think that four years is OK,” Obama said. “Take on some water, but we can kind of bail fast enough to be OK. Eight years would be a problem. I would be concerned about a sustained period in which some of these norms have broken down and started to corrode.”

We're already far beyond some norms breaking down...

Sadly I can't find a great source for that quote. just found it on scmp and jp. weird. I swear I have this memory of that being in politico or nytimes at the time. iirc was from an 'otr' towards the end of his term.

Re:Fork in the Road on Tuesday January 28, 2025 @11:46PM (#42861649)
I doubt public demonstrations would do it. They'd have to start losing MAGA cult people for them to change course themselves.

But if we can hold out for 2 years (big if) there's a very strong chance we'll retake the house.

And if things continue down this path (i think it will get worse) we could maybe take back the senate. but the map is very hard.

That would give power to fight back.

If we get a once in a generation swing of seats we could think about getting rid of the filibuster / few remaining norms. Then we could rebalance judicial. But that's a big risk if not sure the power will endure beyond a handful of cycles.

For backcountry I would love to have another option (and able to stream video and games lol). But I wouldn't drop the garmin for life saving reasons. I * might * if my garmin watch was able to use the garmin sos. Phone + very long lasting / hard to break watch might be enough for 90% of my nights out for me.

Re:The closure of a Methodist chapel on Tyneside on Tuesday March 26, 2024 @06:01PM (#39833360)
I've thought about 'secular Sabbath.' Low or no technology, community, food, being self sustaining outdoors.

There is a lot of appeal to some practices of the mountain Mennonite/amish in CO where I'm at.

But a lot of those things that appeal to me, and trying to organize something like that, could quickly turn into a prepper cult ;0

this is my all time favorite. which i get is a while ago, but i think the nsa cyber will resonate on hn more than current 'hot topics' (gender. biden policies. the guate piece this week really rubbed me the wrong way. worse it was doing the same thing the author critiqued of u.s. insiders lying to support corrupt interests)

the piece: torture and spying is great and stops terrorists! trust me. because of reasons. damned the research saying this isn't true and lack of any proof i could provide as the ultimate insider. that tan suit wearing barack will kill us all!!!

also having the temerity to publish this during peak bush hate too. balls.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/0...

though true that what used to be taken as facts are contested now. and history will never be fully settled timestamped and logged.

it just feels like they are winning with purpose. the christian right has built up an entire infrastructure to churn out 'academic' research, opinion pieces, outright buying news media or creating outlets. all of which is then quoted in judicial opinions by their judges and then taken as the full stop truth; when often most other sources disagree or call it less severe and the source is at a minimum insanely biased

'lean' lol.

the wsj opinion section has gone wildly off the rails.

love their journalism. can't read half the crap they allow to be published in opeds.

at a minimum, is it too much to not publish outright provable lies?

it actually feels like a similar persecution complex vibe to these lawsuits and congressional hearings to me

that somehow if we aren't forced to listen to them, or that their megaphone isn't as loud as it once was, that they are being persecuted and censored with the most orwellian oppression in the history of our country! (i can think of a lot of truly terrible things our govt has done... literal internment camps and more! but that is besides the point)

no one has silenced them. we continue to hear it constantly.

i hear more anti gay slurs now - on traditional media and online - than i ever remember growing up as a very obviously gay boy ;0

if anything, whenever someone crows about being 'cancelled' their message is spread even farther.

there isn't a right to amplification.

the next door kook was never promised a full page column in the local paper. with a guaranteed readership of thousands or millions.

any truth filter or higher bar for discourse that might have existed in legacy news media has been smashed

news corp is the leader and biggest offender

the democratization of the megaphone (internet gives any random conspiracist opportunity to reach more than cronkite did), has given many the impression that they are owed this power to yell and be guaranteed a listening and receptive audience.

and anything less is cancelation or "censorship."

bottom right. looks about 2k.

I can't find the original, but from read it seems like the last tweet was a day before this.

On the insta this was closest i could find and it looks like was LAX not huntington

The pedo thing didn't do it first?!

We don't do ads on twitter (politics). but no brand I know would want to be associated with the crazy-ness and tons of negative press.

Maybe good opportunity for click arbitragers and bottom barrel DTC though! low competition!

twitter is already showing me taboola level ads lmfao

I just can't with hn anymore. came back to specifically read this thread.

at least reddit is fun and has shit posting.

a significant chunk of active commenters on hn have gone off the deep end. a stew of insane, mean, and flat out wrong comments that have nothing to do with tech or cool nerd stuff. and everything to do with mean-spirited (often right wing) politics

There is not proof it was by a foreign government afaik. Though from the reporting I've read it does seem to be murky at a minimum, and not proven to be as clear as top comment-or said. Doesn't matter though.

That specific context you mention is VERY important:

Russia already did this.

The FBI specifically warned to TW that a leak like this had high chance of happening just at the time it did.

Twitter was right to be cautious.

Maybe didn't do everything consistently or perfectly, but I would far prefer them limiting the reach of Hunter dick pics and crack photos than letting a foreign government do so much damage again.

I think their main error was being slow as more background & info was uncovered.

holding people in power accountable (musk visit D.C. musk flies to china. whatever).

tracking & pointing out grossly polluting means of travel.

market making information (musk spends more time visiting ___ faltering plant or ignoring ___. Musk makes trips to __ location, acquisition in the works)?

elon is a public figure and his movements/actions create legitimate news. same as any other celebrity or politician.

gawker did this first and that was actually stalking precise irl real time locations of celebs.

Re:The erasure of women from online pregnancy literature on Saturday November 19, 2022 @05:59PM (#33675818)
Thank you. I've made this comment three times now on the this thread.

Why is it that those making the most 'biological fact' arguments ignore actual biology.

ffs

Re:The erasure of women from online pregnancy literature on Saturday November 19, 2022 @05:58PM (#33675806)
assignment does not always happen before birth.

There are lots of kids born with ambiguous & differing genitals where parents & doctors make an assignment for that kid outside the womb.

also ignores a lot of different chromosomal and hormonal differences outside the norm.

Re:The erasure of women from online pregnancy literature on Saturday November 19, 2022 @05:55PM (#33675786)
Not everyone cares.

and there are plenty of ways to build a family outside of cis-het sex.

and who hides such an important part of their identity from their partner? This isn't som Nip/Tuck tv drama

Re:The erasure of women from online pregnancy literature on Saturday November 19, 2022 @05:48PM (#33675699)
"no third or fourth sex exists"

if people here are using 'biological facts' to make anti-trans & anti-queer arguments, then at least get the biology correct.

there are TONs of variations in both chromosomal combinations, presentation of genitals, outside the norm hormone levels

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersex

i have stopped reading HN frequently because of this crap.

Every month or so when I come back there is another highly upvoted thread on gender, queerness, & race.

almost always with a lot of disconcerting and hurtful language. or outright attacks.

I shouldn't be surprised anymore that a lot of 'smart' & 'educated' people working in tech & sciences use their limited understanding to perpetuate prejudice.

I hope it's just a vocal minority.

But the attacks are growing.

I see this as the result of a specific political agenda, which is using this to gain power & win votes. At our expense. Often cynically passing gross laws they know will get thrown out just so they can get on Fox News and pump their candidacy for president.

And yes, the damage cause by this rhetoric & laws is very real.

Re:Crypto Exchange AAX Suspends Withdrawals on Tuesday November 15, 2022 @01:20AM (#33605916)
I have something like 600 stuck in blockfi (original 1k - market value since then).

I had almost totally forgot about it until someone posted something on reddit, and they sent an email, and now I can't get the money out. I believe it's 50% 'stablecoin' 50% btc.

I do not follow crypto and think the proselytizers are a bit crazy.

In my mind I wanted a small amount of crypto exposure.

But post this stupidness, 5-6% or whatever interest does not correlate with what the actual risk seemed to be in my mind.

well rated corporate bonds are approaching that now. I was just googling examples I think big name corporates are sitting like 5.3%

so in my mind 5-6% was not a big bright ponzi warning sign, especially since they stopped taking new deposits to 'go legit.'

Like afaik there are big brand name corps that are b level rated that have coupons that or higher.

and would be shocking if they all went bust in the same week.

The risk -> return % seems like the yield should have been bigger

Re:Apple Q4/2022 on Monday November 07, 2022 @10:13PM (#33515509)
there were HUGE amounts of MDs purposefully not doing the right thing and running pill mills.

And yeah, distributors for sure have experts and resources to hire experts. And they were repeatedly warned/directed to stop the insane volume. They knew of this. They weren't ignorant, even on purpose.

The opiate lobbyists slyly got the law changed so the DEA couldn't enforce with stop notices.

IIRC In Gibney's documentary they interviewed some of the Congresspeople who voted for it and they thought the bill did the opposite.

pharmacists also had the right to refuse and some did! but Purdue often intervened and pressured them to fill the scripts. I think that was shown either in gibney or maybe the great hulu purdue miniseries?

wapo "THE DRUG INDUSTRY’S TRIUMPH OVER THE DEA"

https://archive.ph/VYOeM

It was probably adtech companies.

There are a bunch who basically pay apps to use their api and then take the data.

Apple was right to kill that imho. IIRC that was foursquare's pivot

There is also lot/lon in programmatic bid requests, but I don't think they're super accurate or granular and lots of fraud. (could be wrong, just from my small experience buy side using DSPs seeing lots of lat/lons being smack in the middle of a city)
