Re:From zero to a RAG system: successes and failures on Thursday March 26, 2026 @09:16AM (#47530073)
>After several weeks, between 2 and 3, the indexing process finished without failures. ... we could finally shut down the virtual machine. The cost was 184 euros on Hetzner, not cheap.

184euro is loose change after spending 3 man weeks working on the process!

Re:The Limits of NTP Accuracy on Linux on Tuesday August 26, 2025 @01:12AM (#45022496)
Why is there no mention of PTP here? If you want accurate time synchronisation in a network just use the correct tool, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precision_Time_Protocol

Linux PTP (https://linuxptp.sourceforge.net/) and hardware timestamping in the network card will get you in the sub 100ns range

A clear ad hominem
The talk was from 2010
Yeah there is a solution. Build more housing. It's a political issue and nothing more

No. That's not what the "British" mean.

There are SOCs available with the DRAM on top already. eg https://www.microchip.com/en-us/products/microcontrollers-an...

Re:Mandatory Helmet Laws Make Cyclists Less Safe on Monday December 05, 2022 @05:36AM (#33863779)
I suspect people don't like comparing with the Netherlands because it doesn't support their biases in this argument
Re:Mandatory Helmet Laws Make Cyclists Less Safe on Monday December 05, 2022 @05:34AM (#33863758)
So all drivers should be required to wear a helmet? If not, why not ?
Re:Mandatory Helmet Laws Make Cyclists Less Safe on Monday December 05, 2022 @05:33AM (#33863755)
That's a fallacious argument. There is no activity that could not be made more safe by wearing a helmet. Yet we don't because the arguments like yours are simple and wrong.
Re:Mandatory Helmet Laws Make Cyclists Less Safe on Monday December 05, 2022 @05:28AM (#33863713)
That experiment has been tried and failed already in Australia.
Re:Are Modern Bicycles the End of DIY Maintenance? on Tuesday November 08, 2022 @12:56AM (#33516303)
Why would you compare disc brakes to cars? Why not compare them to the rim brakes they are replacing. An order of magnitude more complicated to maintain
Re:Things people blamed on bicycles on Wednesday August 24, 2022 @09:21AM (#32579101)
No it's not irrelevant. If helmet wearing is linked to higher per capita head injuries, mandatory helmet wearing should be discouraged.
Re:Busting the 10x software engineer myth on Wednesday September 22, 2021 @05:04AM (#28614341)
Doesn't really bust the myth, though does it? Just says that the 10x engineer is a sign that the company may be in trouble, depending too heavily in such engineers. From 25 years in electronic engineering, I guarantee that there are some engineers that are 5x or 10x others.
Re:Uptime Lab's CM4 Blade Adds NVMe, TPM 2.0 to Raspberry Pi on Wednesday August 04, 2021 @02:35PM (#28064536)
"The board gets fairly warm, likely due to the overhead of the PoE+ power conversion (which consumes 6-7W on its own!"

7 W of losses? That's either wrong or insane for DC/DC regulation. Rough figures, pi4CM (5W) + NVMe (2W) = 7W. So regulation of 50% efficiency?

Re:Open-source soft-core RISC-V SoC with gdb support on Monday May 31, 2021 @02:23PM (#27346825)
Microsemi have the PolarFireSOC which has 4x RISC-V hard cores in the FPGA. I have an eval board on my desk
Re:Improving ventilation will help curb SARS-CoV-2 on Monday May 31, 2021 @01:19AM (#27340434)
It's not even remotely raging
How big is your CPU. I develop on Microsemi and the PolarFire range should do it. 12G transcievers and a decent amount of logic. At about €200+. And considering Microsemi are usually behind the curve, Xilinx and Altera must have similar https://www.microsemi.com/product-directory/fpgas/3854-polar...
Migen looks good but avoiding HDLs while trying to learn hardware design is not the best learning approach. They might be ugly languages but the do force your to think in hardware and gates.

Maybe eating out every day isn't the best idea.
Re:More than 73% of American adults are overweight or obese on Tuesday December 29, 2020 @03:22PM (#25574395)
A professional athlete doesn't need a simple metric to understand if he's at his ideal weight. It's part of his job. The general public do need a simple metric which covers 95% of the population. BMI is that.

FPGA is definitely my number one requirement, that's why I have it
Re:The Heart of RISC-V Development Is Unmatched on Thursday October 29, 2020 @01:31PM (#24932916)
I've a PolarFire SOC eval board on my desk at the moment. 4x U54 cores. Only started to play with it but lots of kernel panics so far. Not sure where the issue is just yet but hopefully it'll get more stable over the next year
Re:I used the internet to painlessly relearn a foreign language on Wednesday September 30, 2020 @02:16AM (#24636150)
Playing devils advocate, if you were able to learn your native language with out an understanding of the grammar, why can't you learn a foreign language?
Re:The worst tool for the job on Tuesday July 28, 2020 @09:41AM (#23975644)
Sure but you have to use it long enough for the stings to get loose. What percentage of tennis racket purchases are used more than once?
Re:Ask HN: Career and life advice for a 30yo on Wednesday June 10, 2020 @07:47AM (#23476011)
All jobs will have downsides, I guess you just want to find one where you can live with the downsides and the upsides far out weight them. For me, I moved between a number of unfulfilling roles until I ended up in my current position.

The tech is pretty conservative and tame but projects are small, the scope is broad and the flexibility to be creative in the implementation is high. The industry is a real niche and the company of a "nice" size (100-200). I like this space as you have more room to bring your own solutions to the table. The weight of a massive process and procedure is not there which helps
