The author works at Kiwi.com, and says there are '70,000 times a day a customer clicks the Pay button on our platform' which is a little under 1 QPS.

Uber, by comparison:

'Trips during the quarter grew 21% YoY to 2.8 billion, or approximately 30 million trips per day on average.'

That would be about 350 payments per second if load was evenly distributed.

The thing that made it so notable at the time is that it was basically using 'all the things'... a hardcoded password by Siemens, a zero day in some Siemens code, a couple stolen private keys from Taiwanese hardware manufacturers, and 4 Windows zero days (the print spooler one, something with Shortcuts, and two escalation of privilege vulns).

> did increase the amount of people crossing parallel to traffic when the signals indicated "don't walk".

This is a feature, not a bug. With the setup of "two 1 way streets feed into a scramble", crossing safely on a "do not walk" is trivial, with only a single direction to look for many of the most common crossings.

Re:Sydney CBD is bringing back pedestrian “beg buttons” on Monday December 19, 2022 @11:06PM (#34061416)
A solution that solves the noise problem without returning to beg buttons, is to make the intersection a flashing red at night. It becomes a 4 way stop where pedestrians have the right of way. Everyone wins.

Lobby to pass a law in your country that gives everyone a $1 per person in household tax credit. Agree to fund it.

Use that as an example, get it inserted into the next big trade agreement as a mandatory thing.

They don't care if you come out with more, just less.

Amazon allows ACH / direct debit payment methods with more longevity than a credit card.

The separate lump sum life insurance is brilliant. Assuming all goes well, it will be a nice initial boost to handle one off 'start of new setup' expenses and ensure a buffer of savings beyond the monthly stipend. Worst case, it can be stretched and used for critical things instead of safety and comfort.
That's a good point.
You can pasteurize it yourself with very little extra effort when making espresso drinks, since you need to heat the milk with a steam wand anyway. The flavor and especially foam of a cappuccino are slightly better when made with self-pasteurized-while steaming raw milk vs equivalent non raw Jersey milk in my at home blind taste tests.
Re:Ask HN: Is there a pure SMS based UI? on Wednesday March 16, 2022 @03:16AM (#30696127)
Your best bet is to set up something like FreeSWITCH that you can text with keywords or your own custom arguments, and have custom scripts craft a response.
Re:Ask HN: What on-call benefits do you get in your company? on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @01:23AM (#30611496)
So 1 day off per week of oncall, and oncall once every 8 weeks.

Do you live in a crossword puzzle? That's the only spot I see "half fortnight" instead of week.

Re:Ask HN: What on-call benefits do you get in your company? on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @01:21AM (#30611478)
This is indeed one of the best in the thread! It's rare to see both 'oncall only once every two months" and "Paid very well for both on call time and active time". Lieu time is also usually unofficial.

What does a typical callout look like?

Re:Ask HN: What on-call benefits do you get in your company? on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @01:16AM (#30611453)
I'm assuming it's not "spend 5 minutes ACKing a page, get a day off". I have seen it as "If you get paged and have to work 11pm to 2am, cancel your morning meetings and come in at noon". It isn't really much incentive to break things.
> Convert a single existing FTE role into a consulting engagement to get you started if you can

Can you give an example of what this would look like?

if you generate a lookalike full of UUIDs, you don't really need to blur except for dramatic effect I guess.
Re:The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've used on Wednesday September 22, 2021 @01:14AM (#28613265)
Are you going to ask in advance "what type of plug should my laptop have to connect to your monitor" or bring a pocket full of ports?

So how should they should stock a 12 can vending machine?

Coke Pepsi Diet Coke Diet Pepsi

etc

They have two versions of that:

One where you can figure out exactly what you are getting if you want. It shows you enough detail about the "mystery hotel" (Example: Free Parking, Gym, At least 3 star, Rating of 8+ out of 10, at least 800 ratings) that quickly referring to the search results from the area makes it clear which is which. Love it and been using for years.

One where it's "One of these 3 specific hotels". I hate this one for the same reason as you because you're rolling the dice, the hotels can be very different and in different neighborhoods.

Agree it wasn't entirely clear.

From the specifications Solar Panel input -> 5V 2A output

I'm getting mixed messages here. Amazon won't sell these devices because they don't allow Prime video streaming. Meanwhile, Amazon disabled Prime instant video on the Google TV, even though it's been working for several years. Do they want these devices to support Prime Instant Video or not?
Any way to share content between devices? Or have a central repository of content on a LAN that you can download to your device? An Android app with content sharing could enable a great offline Khan Academy experience in places without high-speed internet.
You can't put physical cash into the mobile banking.

Yes you can. You can typically deposit without fees at airtime resellers and cell network retail outlets. Faster and cheaper than traveling to a bank branch.

Fees to cash out/send/receive money are as low as 0.22%.

Could I go without a cellphone? Absolutely. I could go to a landline. But thats not the point here.

This article and my question were more about the phone's ability to replace a credit/debit card and bank account, not a landline.

To call someone over a fair price.... but you have to know those people in the first place... If you were buying a car, who would you call to compare prices?

You call your family members, previous buyers, or middlemen in cities to get a rough sense of the market price. There are startups that offer crop price data via SMS.

[Women invest more in the health and well-being of their families — as much as 10 times more] ... That sounds like a gender based stereotype.

Clicking through on the links in the NYT article went to this article in Science (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/345/6202/1273.full.pdf) which cites the following four sources for those statistics:

World Bank, World Development Report 2012: Gender Equality and Development (World Bank, Washington, DC, 2011); http://elibrary.worldbank.org/doi/book/10.1596/ 978-0-8213-8810-5.

D. Thomas, in Intrahousehold Resource Allocation in Developing Countries: Models, Methods and Policy, L. Haddad, J. Hoddinott, H. Alderman, Eds. (Johns Hopkins Univ. Press, Baltimore, MD, 1997), pp. 142–164.

R. L. Blumberg, Ed., Engendering Wealth and Well-Being: Empowerment for Global Change (Latin America in Global Perspective) (Westview Press, Boulder, CO, 1995).

E. Duflo, “Women’s empowerment and economic development,” working paper 17702 (National Bureau of Economic Research, Cambridge, MA, 2011); available at www.nber.org/papers/w17702

The article stated that there was a portion of individuals who did not even possess a bank account. Mobile banking isn't going to do anything for that.

Per this article, only 20% of people in Bangladesh have traditional bank accounts. Yet 33 percent of Bangladeshi men have used mobile money. Mobile money has replaced the bank account.

Are there legitimate needs for a cellphone in their life?

Do you have legitimate needs for a cellphone in your life? For a wallet, credit and debit cards?

Mobile money transfers are used in place of card processing, for loans and gifts. SMS and mobile money transfers have replaced cash remittances or money transfer services from cities to rural areas. You can't access these services without a cell phone.

Lastly, how in the world is a phone going to get them out of poverty? I can understand if it was like a suit, where it gives a person a better position to obtain a job. However, I would think that a library would be better suited to get them out of the position where they're at.

A cellular phone will help someone learn a fair price for their crop, good, or service, and allow them to contact buyers. This will do more for their income than a suit. But access to cell phones and mobile money doesn't just benefit people by increasing income. Giving women the ability to make purchases has listed benefits in the article:

"Women spend money differently from men. They tend to invest more in the health and well-being of their families — as much as 10 times more. They give priority to spending on health care, nutritious food and education. A child born in a household where the mother controls the family budget is 20 percent more likely to survive — and much more likely to thrive."

Re:How Growers Gamed California’s Drought on Tuesday March 31, 2015 @08:09PM (#9300741)
I think the reasoning goes that water is wasted when customers don't really want the restaurant provided water. Whatever is left in the glass gets poured down the drain, then the glasses get washed. Making people actually request water eliminates some waste.

But as this article shows, this is inane. The amount of water wasted by customers of all restaurants in California is probably less than the water used to grow a few acres of almonds.

Re:Old laptop batteries could power slums, IBM says on Monday December 08, 2014 @03:52AM (#8715551)
India's demand for electricity exceeds it's supply. India's Electricity Authority reported power deficits of 8%.[1] This causes rolling blackouts. Some slums only have power a few hours a day, when demand in other areas is low.

Be sure to do some load testing with multiple simultaneous users! In my experience using a Pi as a Wi-Fi hotspot can be pretty unreliable.
Two benefits I can see:

- The parent can change what the QR code points to at any time.

- You can scan a QR code from a distance without making physical contact.

This actually does exist already[1]. They sell a ton of products with a user-specific QR code. Parents/caregivers/etc. can change the message that gets displayed when someone is scanned at any time.
