I agree with you, but unfortunately it seems big tech can already scrape people's data without permission and without paying license fees.

Even without NAT, the same hole punching techniques must be used for IPv6 since there is usually a firewall blocking inbound traffic. Only in CGNAT type scenarios where the network behind NAT is still "WAN" will be helped by IPv6.
Instead of the client sending the user's age to the server, why not make the server send a minimum age to the client? The client is welcome to block content without disclosing personal information to the server. This is as secure as sending an unverified age to the servet.

When downloading a torrent you usually also start seeding (distributing).
Existing hardware can fail. 1.25x is very reasonable given the current insanity.

The part about stories is not true. When sending a story you can choose who to send it to. To make it easier you can even put people in groups
The US company only does software development, hosting is still done by Logius in NL.

K-9 mail (aka Thunderbird) is a nice 12MB, 70MB installed.
Re:VSCodium – open-source Binaries of VSCode on Tuesday January 06, 2026 @05:30AM (#46510723)
This has been my editor for a long while. I can highly recommend it; it is VSCode but without the bullshit.

It should be noted that VSCodium uses a different marketplace for extensions. This third party marketplace does not have (obviously) proprietary Microsoft extensions. Some extensions can still be installed by downloading the .vsix from the official marketplace, but other extensions actively block being installed on "non-official" VSCode.

For Python I recommend basedpyright as an alternative to Pyright/Pylance.

Re:Linux kernel security work on Saturday January 03, 2026 @05:12AM (#46474885)
Huh, how do you unintentionally ship a Linux kernel in a container image? The common base images definitely don't contain the kernel.

Do you know about BOSL2? It can do rounding or chamfering very easily.

cuboid([20, 20, 30], chamfer=5);

Re:Backing Up Spotify on Saturday December 20, 2025 @07:31PM (#46341105)
It is not hard. But please don't misuse it and ruin the fun for everyone. It is nice to be able to use the music relatively easily for hobby projects. My music server has functionality to play tracks from Spotify this way:

Isn't that the SSD controller's job?
ING? You can choose to receive a hardware device instead of using the app.

Re:USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021) on Friday July 18, 2025 @02:21AM (#44601754)
Except that connecting 5V to 5V does not cause a short circuit. No current will flow without a voltage difference. If there is a difference, the capacitors in one of the power supplies will charge up to the same voltage and then current stops flowing again.
Mumble!

Re:Converting a Go-Kart into a Deathtrap on Wednesday April 02, 2025 @04:40AM (#43554741)
Nice project!

Did you know that instead of buying new motor controllers, you can re-use the hoverboard motor controller? Awesome people have made open source firmware you can flash to it: https://github.com/EFeru/hoverboard-firmware-hack-FOC. With this firmware you can make the motors go way faster, up to 40km/h with a 12S battery.

We are also building a kart with hoverboard motors, with a custom welded steel frame. Vibrations are a real issue with the standard solid rubber wheels, hopefully I can find the same air tires you used!

Our website is in Dutch, but you can watch the videos: https://projects.raphson.nl/projects/kart/

Even with all the drama Firefox is still an excellent browser, definitely better for privacy and uBlock than Chrome.
