Requiring a fullscreen window stops almost all possible abuses, though, as you cannot do this from a background process.
When working remotely, you're often allowed to pick between employment and b2b contracts, which is essentially the same thing.
And when I have to access a 2FA protected account, like my bank or email, I do what?
> Europe's GDPR makes the entire EU two-party consent

False. A business might be required to inform you that they are recording, but many EU member states have one-party consent laws otherwise. For instance, Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Denmark, Netherlands, Poland and Italy.

I should suggest warptorio here: https://mods.factorio.com/mod/warptorio2

Again, you're confusing models here. "source of trust" is a technical term, and not a judgement about trustworthiness.

This is an open source game from my childhood which is somewhat similar: https://github.com/suomipelit/ultimatetapankaikki/
> I bet some of y'all blocking YT ads are paying for Spotify. That's just bad planning [..]

Because it's trivial to block youtube ads. There are no decent free Spotify alternatives or ways to get it for free, that I know of.

18? That's ridiculous. I'd understand 14, but at 18 it's not too rare to live alone and have a full time job. And even before, access to maps or Wikipedia is generally quite useful. It's the social media that's the main issue, and not the other features.

This is called Server Sent Events, SSE for short.

When properly done, such organization is almost impossible to find. I'd not be too sure about them not existing. The idea is well known, so someone must have tried it at least.

Re:XUL Layout has been removed from Firefox on Sunday April 02, 2023 @12:34AM (#35407198)
This is already occurred, in some limited from. See quicks mode [1], for instance. Also there is WebAssembly, which should be the replacement for JS. At some point a good-enough UI toolkit for it will be written, and then that could replace HTML/CSS.

I'd guess 90% dev jobs don't involve any algo knowledge more complicated than "should I pick a list or hashmap" or "which columns need indices". They involve converting business logic into code and combining it with good UI/UX.

This essentially equivalent to Roko's basilisk, which is not regarded as an useful argument

How hard can it be to keep a many-to-many mapping between account ids and skin ids, and then make a way to transfer those between accounts, potentially for some fee? Steam has had it for a decade without any issues.

The game publisher still has the final authority on whether a skin is displayed in game or not, and no blockchain is going to change that.

The reason Riot doesn't do this is that it would reduce profits. If they would make more money otherwise, they would be doing that already.

Re:Microsoft somehow brings iMessage to Windows, will it last? on Tuesday February 28, 2023 @10:56AM (#34970684)
Likely the new EU Digital Markets Act, which requires interoperabilty from messaging applications.
Re:No level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health on Saturday February 11, 2023 @10:41AM (#34753298)
Consider having to decide between a 20 min trip by car, or 1 hour trip by train, and the car driving has 100x serious accident probability. However, you save 40 minutes if you drive. Likely, driving doesn't take 40 min off your life expectancy. And even if it did, you save the minutes now, and not at the end of your life.
Re:Why Not Mars on Monday January 02, 2023 @12:16AM (#34214617)
Colonizing Mars is going to be easier than solving tragedy of the commons.
Do that once, and nobody will pay the full price again. They'll just be waiting for the next discount.

Mass scale political manipulation? See Brexit, for instance.
Re:Too Much Internet on Monday October 03, 2022 @11:18AM (#33068730)
Life has no meaning. We are all as insignificant as grains of sand on a beach. Uniqueness is a big lie that everyone wants to believe. If you enjoy watching netflix more than doing slightly-less-common experiences, you should probably do so. The point of not just passively consuming content is creating memories that can be enjoyed later as well, particularly when discussing with other people.
Re:Ask HN: Have you experienced “hiring fraud?” on Tuesday September 27, 2022 @12:21PM (#32997479)
I've never had my ID checked by potential employer, except when the job requires security clearance. This is in europe, though.

Re:Cppfront, Herb Sutter's proposal for a new C++ syntax on Saturday September 17, 2022 @05:40PM (#32881865)
SIMD intrinsics exist, although currently require nightly compiler on non-x86 targets: https://doc.rust-lang.org/1.29.0/core/arch/x86/index.html

Inline assembly: https://rust-lang.github.io/rfcs/2873-inline-asm.html

Performance is almost identical, even the linked benchmark is quite even.

Re:An odd discovery on Spotify on Tuesday August 23, 2022 @05:56AM (#32562532)
There is. Called "private session" in the settings.
The value is not in the winning part, it's in dreaming of winning. Compare that to a movie ticket, not an investment. At least before it becomes a habit. I'd guess people who buy one lottery ticket every year get much more enjoyment out of it than those who buy one every week.

I don't play either. I suppose it's a nice game if you can temporarily forget some leading zeroes.

Re:The layoffs at Klarna on Sunday August 14, 2022 @02:16PM (#32461520)
I find it rather rare that a relatively compentent dev couldn't get approximately equal compensation working for some other company. So if offered $X for volutary severance, where $X at least N months total compensation, most devs who can get a similar job in less than N months will leave. This leaves you with least capable people, which is (usually) not what's wanted when doing layoffs. (This is of course assuming that interview performance is correlated with work performance, which is not necessarily a great assumption to do)
Limiting the one-off purchase to some multiple (maybe 100) of the monthly payment should be part of the law too.
