Re:OccupySaaS on Monday November 02, 2026 @12:40AM (#50333488)
I do not feel remotely bad about mocking anyone who is stuck in a red scare, and I am unconvinced this post moves the needle in any measurable way.

Dear god, the commies are in our software!!! Imagine if those types had a clue just how much digital infrastructure ran on code written by "communists"
Re:So I guess everyone uses LLMs to think now on Sunday November 01, 2026 @06:25PM (#50330974)
Must be nice to not have been forced back into the office. Might as well watch paint dry on the walls while I wait for the LLM barf.

Post specs, in my research these types of displays universally prioritise brightness over all other specs.
who exactly is the adult in the room supposed to be in this analogy? There _is_ no adult in the room, just the two children.
Re:Ghostty 1.4.0 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @05:46PM (#50281389)
Perhaps this is an artefact of how people get rich or the types of people that are able to get rich in our world, not the mere fact that they get rich.

It's almost like human creativity flourishes when not fighting for daily survival needs.
is it integrity to ignore the very clear, direct requests of the person paying me? Like that's a nice idea, and I like what that page is saying, but reality is not so clear cut. If I believe our product is not generally in the public good, is it actually integrity to commit slop to the repo?

I daily drive a similar monitor and I'd give my left nut for an equivalent with twice the pixel density
Why should any rank and file Microsoft employee care about the long term health of the codebase? I'm struggling to find reason to care about not committing pure slop to my own employer's codebase but it's A) what they want and B) path of least resistance for me
The entire stack described in the post is the stuff of nightmares. ColdFusion, IIS on Windows Server, PHP. Things that make you wake up in a cold sweat.
Re:iPhone Duo Teardown on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:19AM (#50239461)
I think it's a great comparison, you don't buy an expensive folding phone if you just need a smartphone, it's a luxury good just like a PS5.
Personally I've found Zed's agent to be much superior to OpenCode. IDK why but it gets better results from the same model on the same task. Using with GLM 5.3 and DeepSeek 4.1.

Set your system’s resolver to the iana roots and see what happens

They wrote the words right there, in their post, on the page. They use it as a review process. I do too. If it makes it into a commit, I know I've looked at it and at the very least decided "this isn't too awful to commit".
Re:Starcraft: Ashfall on Monday October 19, 2026 @07:01PM (#50159191)
They do that anyway today. You really think authors, book writing being the lucrative industry for writers that it is, are suing Universal/Sony/whoever to prevent their IP being infringed?

I do really want a world however where fans/communities can riff on and make derivative works of culturally relevant material without being legally nuked from orbit. The last few weeks have been amazing in the gaming world, creativity abounds and there seem to be no limits as to what we can redesign to our own whims.

Running businesses at massive losses with the expectation of making that money back by being _the_ monopoly on this technology.
Are you sure the product isn't heroin? If we take it away, there's a bunch of people around here at least that will definitely experience withdrawal.
The drug dealer gives you a free hit because it is profitable for him in the long term for you to be addicted to his product, not because he is your friend.
Re:"I'm on a War Footing": Terry Tao and the Crisis in Math on Sunday October 18, 2026 @08:54PM (#50147107)
Is there an echo in here?
Of course, they are miraculous. Nor would I consider hand washing the majority of my clothes. Not everything is machine suitable though :(
Re:Mozilla Introduces Firefox Enterprise on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @10:16PM (#50081563)
It's absolutely insane to me that more orgs aren't rolling out things like uBlock Origin. In fact, at my bigbrain sillycunt valley job I am forbidden by policy from installing it (though no technical control in place). It's the simplest, highest ROI protection you can use on the web imo.
Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @07:39PM (#50080485)
Don’t let adversarial agents work on your code?? What is protecting an ADR against adversarial agents going to solve if they can just embed a highly advanced, obfuscated ‘rm -rf windows32’ anyway
Claude's gonna love my 256mb raspberry pi!
Re:Thinking will become a hobby on Monday October 12, 2026 @08:31PM (#50064991)
Maybe. This reminds me of the Asimov short story "It's Such a Beautiful Day". Teleportation became so normalised in this fictional society that using a regular door and going outside is seen as deviant.
Re:Thinking will become a hobby on Monday October 12, 2026 @07:24PM (#50064464)
Can't speak to the UK experience but in Australia, the nature of in-branch assistance has changed but IMO for the better. No more standing in line waiting for Nanna to get her pension out. I book an appointment online, rock up, get my limit raised or whatever, bam done.
DD-WRT specifically includes drivers/firmware blobs that OpenWRT can't/doesn't. Mostly broadcom stuff afaik.
Re:Governments are mishandling the affordability crisis on Sunday October 11, 2026 @09:02PM (#50049981)
That the rich don't want to be taxed, obviously. and manage to convince a voting plurality that they shouldn't.
Using AI for everything digital, I end up going and doing chores while waiting for the LLM to do its thing. What an insane world, where knowledge work (dreary and uninspired as it is) is automated while I am consigned to scrubbing dishes and waiting for the machine.
Re:New gTLD Application for .lan on Thursday October 08, 2026 @08:05PM (#50014174)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_domain

Your DHCP/SLAAC RA tells clients "here is a list of search domains, when you attempt to query a bare name, also look for the name plus any suffixes listed in the search domain list". So on a system with "home.arpa" in the search domains, you can do something like 'ping myhost' and your system should attempt to resolve 'myhost.home.arpa'.
