It depends on how well you are able to establish relationship with your customer in initial days. Most ppl I have worked with don't care if you work or not, as long as product get delivered. Learn to delegate to your peers.

I have managed to negotiate with my employer to write a book, even do personal consulting gigs when we were working on a tight deadline projects. They were good with it as long as I was able to motivate the team to get things done.

My rule is have an 8 hour job where you are able to delegate work, read about things for your blogs, side projects while having short breaks on main job, establish a social presence so people can look up to you.
