Re:guys why does armenian completely break Claude on Sunday January 11, 2026 @03:26PM (#46579656)
Parent comment was making a joke about the political situation between Armenia and Turkey.
That's a bit like chlorine gas is poisonous, but sodium chloride (salt) makes things tasty.

Highly different compounds, that just contain chlorine atoms.

GE "created the jet engine"? British would disagree

A friend had a pet rescue Wistar rat (albino lab rat). Super fun and friendl :) but they only live about 3 years :(

Re:The Skyline algorithm for packing 2D rectangles on Monday November 18, 2024 @06:48PM (#42178551)
You can probably get denser packing (at least in theory), if you allow rotation. It's just ugly:

Just in time for April Fools

I've worked in a company that wrote Java code that needed to avoid false cacheing. It was fairly understandable and the tooling made it quite testable for performance regressions.

However, the issue in the Netflix blogpost is in the JVM C++ code. I think it's entirely possible to encounter the problem in any language if you're writing performance-critical code.

In development since 2001! Impressively familiar to me

If only it were the case that we hadn't caused massive climate change by burning fossil fuels, causing a severe drought across Europe, so that there were a shortage of simple cooling fluid for the nuclear power plants. If only we could've done see it coming and something...
I didn't know about most of these fermented soy products - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fermented_soy_products

But Tempeh is a pretty common one for vegans. I've used it in curries and stir fries.

Thanks also for the nostalgia trip watching the adverts near the end! I forgot that alcohol and tobacco advertising was on TV back then.
Re:A vegan diet could affect your intelligence (2020) on Wednesday August 18, 2021 @09:51AM (#28220912)
"Whatever the truth is, isn’t it about time we found out?"

Most other vegans I know seem to be very aware of the nutrition issues, and take EPA/DHA supplements and extra vitamins. "Nootch" - nutritional yeast - is also a very common ingredient used to boost vitamins and minerals.

It's of course hard to be 100% sure what's safe, but then eating meat also has it's risks - heart disease, cancer, e. coli. etc - as well as environmental costs.

Going vegan is quite a big step, and most people would benefit from eating a lot less meat.

Re:How elephants avoid cancer (2015) on Tuesday August 17, 2021 @06:56AM (#28208471)
Also needs 2015, and has been posted before https://hn.algolia.com/?q=elephants+cancer
It must be fun to come up with a hypothesis like this and be able to put some engineering constraints on the likelihood of it.

And then being able to summarise it in a fairly readable 4 pages.

It looks fun. Well done!

One thought I had ... it'd be useful if you can add some features to support accessibility.

I can't work out what's going on from that site. The tutorial and download sections seem like a placeholder, and the github link is dead, with the user having no related project (publicly).

I found this but it is quite old:

[edit] this is better - https://gunkrist79.wixsite.com/amibian

Re:Traditional female free diving in Japan on Friday April 16, 2021 @09:45AM (#26833782)
Probably needs a NSFW tag for some tame black and white photos with nipples.

I couldn't guess from the title whether it was female-free or free-diving. It's the latter, which is cool.

Re:How to lower the price of plant-based meat on Saturday February 06, 2021 @03:05PM (#26049451)
:) There's always one. FWIW I noticed Flora do a plant-based range now that's quite good. They label the 'butter' as Plant B+tter.
Re:How to lower the price of plant-based meat on Saturday February 06, 2021 @03:01PM (#26049409)
tldr - economies of scale and cheaper inputs
Re:How to lower the price of plant-based meat on Saturday February 06, 2021 @02:58PM (#26049384)
Agreed. Some vegans/vegetarians don't want their food labelled meat either.

However please don't compare the modern industrial meat production with anything like farming from, say, 500 years ago, or with ancient hunting. Modern meat production is brutal (for necessary cost reasons) and hugely destructive to the environment.

Re:How to lower the price of plant-based meat on Saturday February 06, 2021 @02:55PM (#26049359)
Yes, as long as this isn't going down the route of "consumers will get confused" by terms like "oat milk".

People aren't that stupid and the arguments against using the word milk annoy me. I think it's a sign that people are changing their diet and the dairy industry is worried.

Great, but ... why ? How does this benefit me?

The code examples in other comments seem to have variations of :

   return (circle, rectangle) -> circle.apply(x, y, r);
Why should my code for circles care about rectangles? This looks terrible to me. What am I missing?

Ah. Memories of downloading a 320x256 mpeg of this in the 90s :)
Just being a bit pedantic ... more than half? Atoms typically have more neutrons than protons, and neutrons also weigh slightly more. Surely I'm >50% neutrons by mass?
Re:Let’s Build a Video Card on Monday November 09, 2020 @01:29PM (#25037914)
Hmm. The 6502 is/was often set up to access the memory only half the time. For example a 1MHz CPU would be interfaced with 2MHz memory, and access every other cycle.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOS_Technology_6502#Technical_...

I guess Ben knows this, but avoided it for some reason. Perhaps interleaving the timing on a breadboard isn't that easy? Never tried it myself.
