News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

It'll never happen, because no one cares and we can't do anything about it anyway.

More defeatism.

We should all just roll over and play dead because we are all going to die, no one cares, and there's nothing we can do about it anyway, right?

NO! We all have an effect on everything and every problem is ours to solve.

Even if that means just talking about it. Raising awareness. Creating ideas. Pointing out the flaws in our reasoning and direction. Opportunities for improvement.

Talking about climate change raises awareness. Grassroots initiatives matter. Our voice matters. Talking matters. Writing matters.

Dismissing good ideas with defeatism discourages people from even mentioning ideas that might change or society for the better.

The fear of backlash alone causes damage. It silences good ideas before they even leave the mind.

The ground based stations could be private products too. Just like cars.

My general point is that the USA needs a free public Internet.

Our politicians have no vision for the future of America. They should have done this. If they want to put up cell towers every where I'm OK with that too.

The world is leaving us in the dust.

We are on the same page! :)

I see no reason we should let shareholders take excess profit from the American people for doing nothing but negotiating sweetheart deals with the politicians they own.

Shall we add banks and big Pharma to the list?

But seriously I'm not into the capitalist dogma that masks and enables the reality of corporate welfare.

We can give away trillions to the burgeois but merely feeding the proletariat is unamerican?

That's a frequent glib response to good ideas, which boils down to, nice idea but it'll never happen, because no one cares. It's cynically defeatist.
Taxes pay for libraries, pbs, gps, lots of tax dollars have gone to SpaceX and tesla and solar city. Billions.

We have already paid much of the costs for starlink.

Same could be said of roads. Toll free. Rush hour sucks. We will adapt. There can still be commercial alternatives, like planes today if you want higher rates of travel.
Roads have per user costs and are provided at no cost to the end user. Data is the new cargo. Packets are the vehicles.
Starlink should be a public good. It's like we learned nothing from the wholesale give away of our airways to corporate interests.

We've given away space.

Compare this opportunity to the magnitude of life changing innovations the GPS public good brought us.

I see this too and is very frustrating in modern Web learning.

It might take 8 files and 15 dependencies to make one example work. Only 3 files are partially provided. 5 dependencies are deprecated or no longer supported.

The informative websites aren't designed to help you learn, they are designed to help the helper: get views, get cred, get employed, get ad revenue, get an ego boost.

That's right. There is a goal to separate the employer and employee to absolve the proletariat of the moral connection between their actions day-to-day and the bourgeois who all share in the protections of the corporate veil.

But this cannot be done, despite all attempts to quiet the cognitive dissonance. Every employee of an evil company is evil.

Every political message lobbied for by the employer is the employee's political statement. Any claims to the contrary reek of hypocrisy.

Facebook exactly is an evil company. No question about it. To its very core. Anyone who works there is paid money to propagate an evil impact on the world and thus, all employees who work there are evil.
You're assuming the best of the best decide where to work based on compensation. Also consider the number of pro players is miniscule compared to the number of engineers at fb. It's a false analogy because of the law of diminishing returns and population dynamics.
It absolutely does! There's a lot evidence to support this claim. The smartest, most ethical people leave first. Eventually replacement employees will cost more and more to attract. The company will implode in a toxic talent vacuum. Shareholders will flee as margins decline. The company will have to take increasing user hostile actions to survive. Users will flee. Advertisers will flee.

And FB ceases to exist. A loud message will echo through silicon valley fit years to come.

The only ethical decision for the engineers to make is to quit. Thus all employees there are mathematically unethical. They are writing the code that executes the immoral decisions.

Saying that doesn't help. It's not true, it's an opinion. Is not a fact, but you're presenting it as a fact. You're saying the future will be bad because there's an endless supply of bad people willing to do bad things.

It's a horribly dystopian opinion that disparages the moral action and inhibits good people from doing a good thing: taking a stand against unethical behavior.
