The difference is Uber provided a service the public wanted.
I don’t think the issue with Civil Rights legislation was the Civil War, I think the issue was equality.

As President Lyndon Johnson said, "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket.”

Racism isn’t about race at its core, it’s redirected anger from being exploited and abused by people in power. There is a reason people in power always blame “the immigrants” or “the Jews”; it’s redirection.

Who captures the productivity gains, the workers or capital?
I do hope the No Kings protests can grow into a movement beyond Trump because he is just a symptom of a larger issue and the real “kings” are not elected officials, those people are just their servants. Virtue Hoarders by Catherine Liu is a great book on this topic.
People use the phrase “no kings” because “oligarchy” is too big of a word for Americans to understand. I am not being facetious. Most Americans are very poorly educated and read at an 8th grade level, at best. Other comments noting that it is a better slogan and historical links to the country’s founding are also correct. It’s simple and everyone can understand it.
Making/growing anything for personal use should be legal.

A government should have no power over people’s private lives, so long as their actions do not infringe, and do not conspire to infringe, on the rights of others.

Perhaps they’re motivated by Europe’s support for Ukraine and the recent data center attacks in Russia?

King Gizzard, probably.
You win, they win. You lose, they win. It’s a scam.

Would love to see a generative AI tool that can integrate the QR/barcode into the artwork itself. Maybe in the next version… Maybe someone could vibe code that.
I do hope they drag their feet just long enough to delay any price declines until after the U.S. elections, for their own sake.
Re:Apple's smart home camera reportedly won't record video on Friday October 02, 2026 @02:02AM (#49930263)
Why use a camera and the optical spectrum at all when WiFi can do imaging well enough to recognize people? [0]

Xfinity currently offers WiFi motion detection with their gateways. [1]

[0] Ordinary WiFi can now identify people with near perfect accuracy https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/05/260522023127.h...

Seems like it’s easier to lose our rights than defend them. It shouldn’t be.

The way Trump has exercised power and ignored the law should be a real wake up for everyone. Imagine if we had a competent dictator? We’d be in real trouble.

Strongly agree. Perhaps an economy shouldn’t be organized around money.

If everyone votes, this will be overturned in a couple years.
What good is agency without power?

Re:Anthropic CEO Says It's Time to Slow AI Model Advances on Saturday September 12, 2026 @03:48PM (#49676493)
This is all just more IPO hype. The suits eat this shit up because they don’t use the tech heavily themselves and thus don’t realize the limitations. Reminds me a lot of the Dotcom boom.
Re:How Poor People Buy Cars on Saturday September 12, 2026 @02:11AM (#49669401)
Is this sarcasm? Serious question. At least half of HN is autistic. Anywhere there’s friction there’s a market opportunity. Everyone knows that. So this must be sarcasm.
Re:The Death of Shame Is Tearing Us Apart on Friday September 11, 2026 @01:38PM (#49662252)
That’s more about power than shame. When people feel powerless imposing on others is one of the only ways they can take a semblance of power back.
Re:iPhone Duo on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @05:31PM (#49634695)
This is really nice for people who read books and want to ditch carrying around a mini tablet or e-reader, I just wish it had the camera array of the iPhone Pros.
> Why are we doing this again?

Because Donald Trump is mentally ill, and it’s time we start talking about it as a Nation.

Any fix needs to start with impeachment and removal by Congress. I’d love to see bribes treated as treason.
You know the answer. There’s a reason the state considers antifa a threat.
They don’t hate their parents. Their parents defeated fascism but brought some of the war home with them.

Emotional suffering is a memetic disease, an information disease spread by behavior; it makes people sick. The output of one integrated system becomes the input of another, like LLM distillation. Think of a war, or any emotional state, as a packet of information, that spreads like a virus, and infects and modifies the structure of the limbic system, thus transferring the emotional state, the structure of the limbic system, or LLM, from one system to another.

War made the Greatest Generation sick, and because they didn’t get treatment after fighting the sickness of fascism, they brought it home and it made their kids sick. When people are emotionally sick they don’t feel good, and that makes them emotionally inward focused, to the point they don’t have the capacity for much empathy towards others. This makes people appear selfish. It made a whole generation selfish. Because the virus affects the mind, it affects perception of reality and self; people don’t realize they’re sick.

Same thing is happening in Palestine; a group of people who were treated inhumanely are treating another group of people inhumanely. It’s a sickness. An actual sickness.

Re:Oceans hit highest temperature on record on Monday August 24, 2026 @05:55PM (#49426365)
As they say, “power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Perhaps humanity shouldn’t have absolute power over the planet. Perhaps we should check our own power to save ourselves. We’ve done it with government, to insure stability and longevity, why not the planet?
Sounds like boomers everywhere.
Re:The Future, Made in China on Monday August 03, 2026 @03:44PM (#49160487)
I think the “end of history” idea was sold to the public in the same way and for the same reasons they were sold trickle down economics.

Totally agree on the racism. I do hope the West doesn’t learn that lesson the hard way.

If police can lie to the public because free speech then the reverse should also hold true.
“Rules for thee but not for me” is the narcissist’s core value.
