Re:Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech says hello on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @04:27PM (#49822040)
It is and frankly, it's always been a Google weakness.
Re:We Write Code by Hand on Monday September 21, 2026 @10:58AM (#49788140)
This has the energy of a collective of archers proudly announcing that they still fire arrows in the age of gunpowder.

To each their own, though.

> Taking away some of the more monotonous and "uncreative" tasks in any job can be taking away some of the variety in the work. Variety is nice.

Ultimately, and this applies to so much of life, "to each, their own," right?

Re:GPT-6 Astra on Thursday September 03, 2026 @08:58PM (#49559166)
Yeah, I can't believe all of the skepticism. If we're not at textbook AGI, we're awfully darn close.

The demo video showed Astra create a drawing of a rocket ship from an audio prompt, take the drawing to blender, and ended with the gentleman 3D printing the rocket ship. Maybe I'm a bit older than the average HN commenter, but that's damn near magic and a great many here are kind of just taking it for granted.

Americans are not uniquely ignorant. American ignorance is just blasted out to the entire world to see.
It's wild how in America at least, the people have to relearn the same lessons every generation or two. It turns out, some regulations are actually beneficial to a society. Maybe don't take a chainsaw to the groups who implement and look after these regulations.
Usually I'm with you. In these instances, there's a ton of malice, however, with what DOGE did and the relentless drive from conservatism to shrink government and regulations (many of which aim to protect consumers).
With all due respect, this is a wild take. Things aren't great in the U.S. right now, but they're not even in the same universe as what the Stasi was doing.

> I think it would be easier to understand the playing field and choose your actions accordingly, if you accept the US has entered its East Germany / late 20th century Soviet era -- except of course with 1000x more invasive and effective surveillance tech.

Re:Buy Your Friends Batteries on Monday August 17, 2026 @01:52PM (#49334951)
True, but you're still buying an entire battery yourself in the course of a calendar year.

I love the spirit behind this but it's strange advice. I consider myself lucky to have a healthy roster of adult friends, and I still think getting 16 of them to spend significant money on each other's birthday would be a big ask to pull off.

What a cool way to convey the benefits of having strong friendships.

Re:Read this before you buy that TV streaming stick on Thursday July 30, 2026 @04:28PM (#49115319)
Reading this, I caught myself wondering how we distill what's in this excellent write up into something the average consumer understands, including the dangers from buying and using devices like this.

Is it a graphic that's shared? Something else? I am sure we all know or have heard of people with these devices that promise free streaming.

Re:Claude Cookbook on Friday July 24, 2026 @05:38AM (#49033165)
Not only that, but all of this tooling around models has such a short shelf life as the models themselves grow in capabilities, they absorb the tooling. We've already seen it over and over again.
Re:Schema Harness Achieves ~99% on Arc‑AGI‑3 Public on Thursday July 16, 2026 @05:54PM (#48940796)
Yep. That was the entire subtext from the drop in IBM's share price yesterday.
Re:Schema Harness Achieves ~99% on Arc‑AGI‑3 Public on Thursday July 16, 2026 @04:10PM (#48939587)
Indeed. And you can make this case about any tooling at all that is model adjacent.
Re:Apple is about to make Hide My Email useless on Tuesday June 16, 2026 @05:57PM (#48562716)
Exactly. No reasonable business will ban emails from this subdomain.
Re:Claude Fable 5 on Tuesday June 09, 2026 @02:53PM (#48465801)
Thankfully this, like most other tech, will get cheaper through the years.
I could totally see that
Bingo. They see this as the future commodity it will be. Customers will choose AI providers much way they choose a car: taste, price, a few other factors.

And to your point, Google has a massive balance sheet, produces their own AI chips, and is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Re:The Art of Money Getting on Saturday May 23, 2026 @02:21PM (#48249906)
Said another way: "Pride is for the poor."
It's not about the paywall in this case. It's to prevent AI companies from scraping a publication's archives for training data. If AI companies want that data, they can compensate publishers, not extract it for free from the Internet Archive.
Re:Qwen3.7-Max: The Agent Frontier on Wednesday May 20, 2026 @01:17PM (#48210958)
On some level, it's the lesser of two evils. Both do suck as options, I agree.
Re:Google changes its search box on Tuesday May 19, 2026 @02:54PM (#48197657)
I'm not jumping in with both feet, either, but "never" is a very big word.
Re:We let AIs run radio stations on Monday May 18, 2026 @11:41PM (#48188923)
Same. Legit groan laugh in an oh-no kind of way when I read this:

> November 12, 1970. East Pakistan. The Bhola Cyclone. The deadliest tropical cyclone ever recorded. Winds of 115 miles per hour. A storm surge of 33 feet. They estimate 500,000 people died. ‘It’s going down, I’m yelling timber.’ 3:33 PM. Timber by Pitbull and Ke$ha

Re:AI Slop Is Killing Online Communities on Thursday May 07, 2026 @11:30PM (#48058184)
I've thought about this a lot as well and could definitely see it happening.
Re:Agents for financial services and insurance on Tuesday May 05, 2026 @05:08PM (#48028587)
Yep. There's no certification needed to create a financial model or close monthly books.
Re:Clarification on the Notepad++ Trademark Issue on Tuesday May 05, 2026 @05:05PM (#48028550)
Yikes. They even placed his name and bio on the Notepad++ for Mac website to help legitimize it.
Re:A Desktop Made for One on Monday May 04, 2026 @04:25PM (#48014494)
I wish you would have taken the time to reply and clarify your comment. I've been here for 16 years – my commenting history is readily available. My words and thoughts are my own.
Re:A Desktop Made for One on Monday May 04, 2026 @04:25PM (#48014483)
That's a solid point. I've often thought about how a hit TV series some day might come out of one person's apartment.

AI is inverting the old "ideas are worthless; value is in the execution" adage. Ideas themselves will be valuable.

Re:A Desktop Made for One on Sunday May 03, 2026 @09:57PM (#48003779)
Wait, are you implying I used an LLM to write my comment? Sorry if I'm misreading what you're saying.
Re:A Desktop Made for One on Sunday May 03, 2026 @08:04PM (#48002984)
Absolutely and you're dead on thinking about the opening of the possibility space. The value of software as an enterprise will fall as we enter an age of abundant, and often custom, bespoke software. There will be many great apps coming and some lousy apps.

Another thing to watch for is how chatty the internet is about to become. A great many of these apps will hit APIs, ping each other, and so forth.
