The use of physical drop boxes placed behind a firewall is nothing new. There is in fact a specific Linux distro for the Rasberry Pi targeted at this use case (see pwnpi.sourceforge.net). It comes packaged with a large suite of penetration testing tools. While building from scratch is a useful exercise for engineers, reinventing the wheel does not merit much attention.

While this obviously reduces friction in sending money, it's not clear that this is entirely a good thing.

This would definitely make classic social-engineering tricks like Nigerian scams easier to pull off.

Nobody bats 1000. To extend the metaphor, a baseball player is considered highly successful if he can hit one out of three pitches.

People tend to emphasize their successes. Not only does it naturally fit our desire to inflate our ego but confidence is often considered important to attracting others to ventures.

This skewed emphasis is especially prominent online. See http://healthland.time.com/2013/01/24/why-facebook-makes-you...
