Wow, a driver that’s been retired for 13 years won for a team that shut down 10 years ago in the first ever season that Nascar has decided to run 2 Daytona 500s in the same month.

Re:FTC Sues Facebook for Illegal Monopolization on Thursday December 10, 2020 @10:10AM (#25374455)
Someone needs to tell the FTC that if they don't like how Facebook does its business, they're free to just start their own Facebook
Re:GitHub Releases Dark Mode on Tuesday December 08, 2020 @12:53PM (#25348865)
Nice to see but it's too contrast-y for me compared to the stylus theme I've already been using which honestly looks better https://github.com/StylishThemes/GitHub-Dark
Re:Colombia is considering legalizing its cocaine industry on Thursday December 03, 2020 @12:55PM (#25292034)
> Anyone who wants to get cocaine, will get cocaine

I never thought this was a good argument against making something illegal, because there are definitely people who only-kinda want cocaine but are deterred by the law. Those people could have ended up as addicts if it was legal (and easier) to get.

Why is murder illegal? Anyone who wants to murder someone will do it. At that point why is anything illegal?

Re:Kubernetes is deprecating Docker runtime support on Wednesday December 02, 2020 @02:31PM (#25280435)
k8s runs containers, docker is just one implementation of containers.
Re:Kubernetes is deprecating Docker runtime support on Wednesday December 02, 2020 @02:27PM (#25280362)
yes it's just the underlying container runtime. so this is really only applicable to sysadmins managing their own k8s installation

Sounds like we should get the light inside the body to kill the virus
Re:DOJ unveils proposed Section 230 legislation on Wednesday September 23, 2020 @03:22PM (#24570863)
Don't be semantic, my point is why isn't speech codified at the same level?

Clearly at some point someone said "freedom of religion should mean protection from persons and corporations", why can't we say the same about speech?

Re:DOJ unveils proposed Section 230 legislation on Wednesday September 23, 2020 @02:50PM (#24570504)
Why is speech the only part of 1A that gets this treatment? You wouldn't say the same thing about religion
Re:Wikipedia is getting a new look on Wednesday September 23, 2020 @12:54PM (#24569143)
I'm surprised wikipedia has gone this long without joining every other website in fixing their unbroken UI
Re:Why is Apple acting like an asshole? on Wednesday September 16, 2020 @03:16PM (#24496341)
What's the saying, hey, don't like it just start your own Apple :-)
so the easiest, biggest, and most blatant antitrust target out of your own examples is just a political play?
Wait you can get sponsors on github?
> your capacity to publish anything you want is restricted by the policy of whoever hosts your servers, and their ISP, and their ISP's ISP.

this is obvious and anyone still unironically pushing the "just make your own" narrative is aware of it but has no other comeback

> "New England" IPAs aren't overly hopped

NEIPAs are by definition excessively hopped, it's just mostly (if not all) dry hops that impart the aromas you described instead of bitterness that's associated with classic IPAs.

The "Jobs page" that's linked to in the article just goes to a page of all the onion articles that are about "jobs". Is that the joke?
Re:16-inch MacBook Pro on Wednesday November 13, 2019 @01:35PM (#21527657)
It wasn't until I got a touchbar that I realized the only function key I ever consistently used was F5 for refreshing pages. Even the few I needed in my IDE for 3-4 button hotkeys are replaced with a single button that does what I want. The touch bar is great, and I really don't understand why people cling to function keys so much
Re:Airbnb Plans to Verify Every Listing on Wednesday November 06, 2019 @03:50PM (#21467082)
unrelated to the article but it is really dumb that ny times doesn't have anchor linking right to specific headlines if they're going to put every article on the same page. I was wondering why this linked to an article about Kim Kardashian before I scrolled halfway down the page, past every ad of course...
Re:Equifax doesn't want consumers to get their $125 on Tuesday September 17, 2019 @04:33PM (#20999763)
I just did it and it worked fine. followed the link from my email.
Re:A neural network to auto-complete your thoughts on Tuesday September 17, 2019 @04:28PM (#20999721)
I typed:

this is a story all about how my life got flipped

then tab-completed the rest: over in a natural way and how i was born with two opposites, a father and a mother. i am just a child. You can also make use of the web -based API to create your own sentences, and it has many features such as multi-document syncing, automatic tagging, and automatic deletion .

gave up when it turned back into an ad

Re:The Cult of Kubernetes on Monday September 09, 2019 @02:19PM (#20920789)
Exactly. The point of the first meme in the blog post isn't "kubernetes is so overcomplicated why would anyone deploy their blog on it", it's "your blog is nowhere near complex enough to merit running on kubernetes".

Everyone here is blaming the truck company instead of the person that bought a flatbed to transport a 2-lb box

if I have a wallet on my computer and send it to your wallet on your computer that would be anonymous.

it's when you connect the transaction to some bank (like, when you transfer from the wallet on your computer to Coinbase where they have your tax ID number, then withdraw to your real-world bank) that it can be so easily traced.

but if you just keep some btc in a wallet and do business out of that it's effectively cash. even if you bought bitcoins on Coinbase then transferred to your local wallet, once it leaves Coinbase the wallet ID itself doesn't have anything tying it to the laptop in your friend's basement in Brazil. from there who knows where it goes, I just bought pizza with it officer idk what the guy who sold me the pizza spent it on

a transaction ledger itself isn't inherently identifiable. otherwise we would know who just transferred $1B+ in this article and not have a bunch of comments wondering who it is lol

I learned this the hard way in college. I got accepted to a summer startup program for an idea I had (it wasn't quite an incubator but more like a think tank course, where you got a stipend to work on your startup idea). I thought I could work on my startup, meet all the requirements to stay in the program, and keep my full-time job as a developer at another company.

I was able to do all 3, and thought it showed I was a real hard workin' go-getter to have a full time job and a full time startup I was working on. Until the startup program coordinators found out I was working a job along with my startup and almost kicked me out of the program.

It was then (actually, years later) that I realized I wasn't doing 2 jobs full time; I was doing 2 jobs part time, and that what makes the people who can run a successful startup while working on a career exceptional is just that, they're exceptional at both.

I think a lot about how much further I could have gotten with that startup if I had just quit my job and actually worked full-time on it, especially given that the program paid a stiped, instead of trying to sneak some code in whenever my boss wasn't asking for something else.

So I wouldn't say impossible, but really tough for anything big enough to be its own business.

Re:Google Cloud networking issues in us-east1 on Tuesday July 02, 2019 @03:50PM (#20338786)
how is this any less substantive than the comment directly above that's just "There but for the grace of God go we"?
5% back on only Amazon with a $120 annual fee (prime) is not very good.
Yeah sunlight and air are more decentralized but how many companies make solar panels and windmills?
it's also the imbalance of cost, where western countries get shamed and blamed if they don't agree to costly restrictions while places like China and India cause most of the world's pollution and don't care
how does the IRS know you only have wage income? if you also have cash or some other income that's not automatically reported then their pre-filled form would be wrong
