I don’t disagree with your overall point but developed countries are raising their retirement ages because they’re trying to stave off pension crises. It’s the surprising alternative to taxing corporations and the ultra-wealthy appropriately.
Shift+Cmd+5 brings up the built-in screen capture tool, which includes options for recording the screen (or a window, or a section of the screen).

OpenScreen and its ilk seem to have more features for post-capture editing though.

I've been a fan of opnSense for a few years now - I'm actually using it as the WAN device for our office, as well as a VPN concentrator in other contexts.

Some recent changes are driving me up the wall though - their new UIs for configuring VPNs (IPSEC and OpenVPN) are far less intuitive than what they've termed the 'legacy' UI and I note that recent versions have introduced a firewall rule migration feature that I'm not touching with a 9-ft barge pole.

These changes are making me wary about using opnSense in future, which is a pity because other than pfSense there isn't really a fully-featured, open-source firewall OS that comes close to matching it (and pfSense has its own issues). Linux is great and all - and I do use it for routing/firewall/VPN in places on our network - but there doesn't seem to be a dedicated network appliance distro that bundles in a comprehensive Web UI. Apart from OpenWRT and its ilk, but I'm not convinced that that's suitable for enterprise deployment.

Irish post codes will get you the exact unit within the flats.

They’ll give you a small handful of examples, of which a number occurred in the UK (famously not a member of the EU), most of which were actually arrests for incitement, and of the remainder the majority were thrown out before ever going to trial, or subsequently on appeal.

Very few of the cases they present will have involved citizens being murdered in the streets by the government for exercising their absolute right to free speech.

The Air never had the Touchbar. Only the Pro line had it.
You didn't misread, parent did.
I haven't edited a .plist in years, but nor have I fiddled with the Windows registry in years. Honestly think both OSes ship with sane defaults these days.
Re:Show HN: Hosting my website using my own C web server on Thursday September 26, 2024 @05:34AM (#41656353)
Virtual hosting is only similar in that it allows you to serve content based on the requested FQDN (or, indeed, destination port of the request).
Oh god that last one drives me up the wall. It entirely defeats the purpose of using a keyboard shortcut to switch applications if you have to move the mouse to open a window anyway. It's beyond me why MacOS wouldn't automatically restore the most recently minimised window, the way literally every other DE does.
Re:Big Tech to EU: "Drop Dead" on Monday May 20, 2024 @03:27AM (#40413160)
The answer to most of these is the same: companies have to show that they are making a reasonable, good faith attempt to comply. If they can show that they have policies, that they have processes to implement the policies, and that their users have read the policies, understand the processes, and are aware of their own responsibilities then there's a strong likelihood that they will not run afoul of the directive.
Re:Big Tech to EU: "Drop Dead" on Monday May 20, 2024 @03:06AM (#40413052)
Yeah, but they're simultaneously missing the fact that some of the protocols that underpin things like WhatsApp etc. were developed in the EU, and probably with funding from the EU.
Re:Bollards: Why and What on Monday May 06, 2024 @05:51AM (#40272906)
I was a little confounded by the author's point about guardrails often being on the outside of sidewalks. It was only when I copy/pasted the URL for the article that they were quoting that I realised that they both had it arse-about-face and actually meant that guardrails are often on the _inside_ of the sidewalk. The outside of a sidewalk (path in this part of the world) would be the bit that borders the road, surely.
Re:Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update on Saturday November 18, 2023 @07:34AM (#38318847)
The only sensible way to go about it would be to just drop it one day, no fan fair, no announcements, no additional hype.

Re:Sinead O’Connor has died on Thursday July 27, 2023 @05:59AM (#36891268)
It's a shitty thing to write but she's also someone who had very openly struggled with poor mental health for basically all of her life. I've a hard time holding something as thoughtless - in a very literal sense - as that against her.
Re:Sinead O’Connor has died on Thursday July 27, 2023 @05:48AM (#36891193)
With the what now? She experience IRA bombings? Are you sure about that?

And of course the physical characteristics - yes, that ASUS laptop has the same or a slightly better technical spec than the MacBook Pro that I want, but it's also made out of plastic and it's half-an-inch thick!

Re:Ask HN: Why is Microsoft Teams still so bad? on Friday September 23, 2022 @09:20AM (#32951543)
I don't think I saw anyone mention it but you can't copy PNGs from a web page and paste them into Teams.

If I want to share graphs from LibreNMS with my team, I have to use the screenshot tool.

They are anti-Irish. That’s baked into their identity and was added as an ingredient literally centuries ago. US history has nothing to do with it except insofar as they brought their bigotry with them when they went there.

The people who march in Orange parades may be from Northern Ireland but they do not consider themselves Irish in any way and would be deeply offended if they were described as such. British. Ulster Scots. Northern Irish at a stretch. But never Irish.

You should visit Northern Ireland during marching season - around July 12th - and then decide whether or not you think Orange matches could be described as “anti Irish”.

Unless you’re going to engage in a bit of sophistry - “the people who participate might be anti-Irish but the actual Orange Order as an organisation is simply expressing its fondness for the Act of Union” - I don’t see how you could not see the anti-Irish aspects of the Orange matches.

I wanted it!

I played through the first third of Arkham Asylum using OnLive. The nail in the coffin for me at the time was the paltry selection of games; I couldn’t justify the subscription.

I work for a European ISP though, so I’ve generally had better-than-most internet service for the last 20 years.

I love that you can preview videos in their icons. Where "preview" actually means "watch the entire thing from start to finish".
As a tech company you know what outcome you want your ML algorithm to produce and you presumably have some way of figuring out whether or not it’s producing that outcome. Presumably you also know what’s being fed to the ML algorithm as training material.
> You don't "believe" in evolution or the big bang or an old earth. Scientific inquiry 101.

"Believe" is absolutely the right word; most of us don't have the time, inclination, or ability to perform the scientific method required to demonstrate evolution, big bang, or old earth. Outside of a very small number of people, the overwhelming majority of us are taking it on faith that these theories are correct.

Re:Apple, Epic, and the App Store on Tuesday August 18, 2020 @04:18AM (#24196359)
> It's interesting that few people don't understand the difference between permission to distribute versus actual distribution.

Not sure what distinction you're trying to draw here but in order for Apple to take their 30% cut, someone has to download the app, at which point Apple have de facto distributed it to someone.

> If Apple was doing any distribution for you at all, you wouldn't need to pay Facebook and Google for distribution.

This makes very little sense to me. Are you saying that if I pay Apple to distribute my app on the App Store then they should also distribute it on every app store? And that if they aren't then they're somehow failing me?

> Note how this was different in the early days, where simply being on the app store would get downloads. That has not been true for 7-8 years now.

The App Store is a shit-show in terms of discoverability, this is true. I'm not even sure what they can do to improve things at this stage.
