The point is that having near or below 0 rates has been a terrible policy for almost everyone, just as increasing them in response to inflation is going to hit most people hard now.

A problem has been kicked down the road for years, it was always going to blow up in our faces.

I think you might be missing parent comment's point. The way I read it they aren't saying that old code is better, just that you used built everything up from scratch generally (or to a much greater extent than nowadays) instead of using whatever framework is in fashion this week
Re:A Chip to Bridge the USB 2 – USB 3 Divide on Monday March 07, 2022 @04:39PM (#30593640)
>The unstated is that the core problem here (lack of USB2 on a USB3 connector) is _NOT_ standard.

It does say this at the end of the article.

Exactly, it's an overt message that what you say is being watched, so watch what you say.
>Your manager should of deflected this sort of stuff

Also keep in mind that there is a good chance the manager might have had OPs back in all this, maybe it's just the managers boss who has unreasonable expectations (maybe due to poor communication from the manager about changing requirements etc).

All company names in daily wtf are Initech and Initrode
Re:Samoa Scraps Daylight Saving Time on Thursday September 23, 2021 @09:03AM (#28628504)
It's not just farmers. It was done away with in the UK for 3 years back in the late 60s and people hated it.

There are 2 options, either going with summer time permanently which seems the most sensible approach in theory and what they did with the British Summer time experiment. The problem is that although having longer evenings in winter sounds good in theory it means that it's dark until 10am in the depths of winter and roads are icier when people are making their morning commute.

The other option is to keep standard time, but that will mean losing the late evenings in summer and the sun rising even earlier which would be a loss.

I don't see what the big issue people have with it is. It makes perfect sense for northern/southern latitudes and essentially all my clocks adjust themselves automatically.

We do have digital certs in Europe (as mentioned in other comments). I don't know why the article mentions Europe, the cards aren't used to check vaccination here.

That's something I like about array languages too, and Lisp is similar from what I know of it. Essentially defining a DSL for the problem and then working with it.
Re:Floating wind turbines could rise to great heights on Friday July 23, 2021 @10:41AM (#27931208)
I would imagine they are anchored to the seabed the same way floating oil rigs are.
You clearly didn't read the review. They say it is only for models sold through Amazon
Re:Why is AI hard and physics simple? on Tuesday June 22, 2021 @04:06PM (#27596499)
Ah, well that explains the clickbaity title, which is all most comments here are discussing at face value.
> there would not be a single functioning nation on earth

Holy hyperbole, Batman.

No, it would just mean that there would be a homogeneous corporate tax system, which is what people seem to always argue for.

'Parasites' is also a ridiculous description.

You seem to have a very strange definition of theft. Other countries are perfectly entitled to do similarly, as Netherlands does.

Why is there not a focus on countries such as Bermuda here? They are the "tax havens" who make this possible in the first place.

Windows drives me mad with this stuff any time I have to use it.

I'm baffled by people still claiming "desktop Linux hasn't arrived" when they put up with this shit.

Linux desktop has been perfectly fine for at least 1.5 of those decades.

Fair point.
Re:Child tweets gibberish from US nuclear-agency account on Tuesday March 30, 2021 @04:26PM (#26639983)
Is it standard practice to tweet about it when launching a nuclear attack?
Re:FreeBSD 13.0 – Full Desktop Experience on Wednesday March 17, 2021 @02:58PM (#26495402)
Or use tabbed/fullscreen/custom views.

The GP comment is so backwards that I wonder if they even used a tiling wm for any period of time longer than a day or two. Tiling window managers are better at managing many windows than having them all scattered randomly over a desktop with a traditional window manager.

Re:Timezone Bullshit on Wednesday February 10, 2021 @09:20AM (#26089447)
For that use case definitely, though a law change is a bit of an edge case.

For stamping times like in a log though UTC should always be used server side.

Re:Timezone Bullshit on Wednesday February 10, 2021 @06:52AM (#26088052)
I'd say the moral is that server side should always be in UTC.

> Let's take take a look, using the disastrously bad unix libc timezone tools

Are there any more examples of them causing issues to warrant being called "disastrously bad"? This post just seems to have one example of bad error handling when they the TZ env var is set incorrectly.

I'm genuinely interested if they actually are bad since they are used a lot.

I have a son who is a toddler right now, very well put - "ingenuity" made me laugh.
Re:Ask HN: Why are 5 inch USB floppy drives so uncommon? on Thursday January 07, 2021 @06:26PM (#25679110)
It actually saddens me to have 5 1/4 bays on my computer that are completely unused nowadays. There's not even any point having a dvd burner anymore.
Re:Slack is down on Monday January 04, 2021 @10:49AM (#25632827)
They should at least update the status site to reflect issues currently happening.

I was wondering why the link from a Jira wasn't opening in slack, the page eventually timed out and gave me a link to status.slack.com where it told me everything was peachy. Cue me wasting time trying it again because apparently there was no issue with slack..

Not "making it up", I am basing it on every Ryanair flight I've been on.
I believe they had an order in place already, but I bet they've negotiated a big discount on it now.

I think people will fly on the MAX (or 737-8 as it's going to be badged) after a year or two assuming there are no more accidents. Cheaper long haul flights is too tempting.

Though I don't think I'd like to be stuck in a Ryanair plane with the temperature notched all the way up so the passengers buy drinks for longer than 1/2hrs.

How does this differ from Objectivefs?
Travellers could also be considered gypsies. They are mainly in Ireland and England and are regarded similarly.

Part of the problem is that a nomadic lifestyle just doesn't gel with modern society so they don't integrate at all. For the same reason it's hard for these people to find work and a subset do often turn to crime.

Culturally they also have very conservative and often misogynistic views which acts as another barrier to integration.

In ways it is similar to the issues with Islamic migrants integrating into European society. It's too simplistic to just label it as racism and be done with it (not to say there isn't racism). There are real issues.

Re:Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S. on Saturday November 07, 2020 @04:42PM (#25019769)
It seems to be everywhere (even on the top rated comment here). Biden himself is dismissed as being not left enough by a lot the online population from what I can see.

Because he wasn't the the fashionable choice for Democratic nomination (Sanders) he's reduced to being just an old guy who isn't Trump but is in the right party without anyone even bothering to even read his Wikipedia page or look up some of his speeches on youtube.

He's a passionate politician and an empathic speaker who has the experience to be a realist and appeal to republican voters too. He's exactly what is needed right now.

Sanders wouldn't have had a chance to get in, but even if he did he would just polarise things even further.
