Re:Why are car keys so expensive to replace? on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @10:05AM (#50352927)
I recently bought a car with just one key - car was priced about £500 lower than expected but the replacement price of the key was £350, that was via a local auto security specialist as the dealer price was much more expensive.

Only bought the second one because you need both in the car to enable the digital lock via the app. Only then did I realise that digital lock via app isn't supported in the UK.

Ah well, at least I now have a spare which the girlfriend is eyeing up...

Shortly after my 50th birthday I received a package in the post - a bowel cancer screening kit supplied by NHS Scotland - apparently I will now receive one automatically every couple of years until I'm 74.
So you're a waffle guy?!
Re:ADHD, autism or complex trauma? [pdf] on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @06:12AM (#49976442)
Gabor Mate was trying to push something similar - the phrase "if all you have is a hammer then everything looks like a nail" is extremely useful here, Gabor is really good with trauma but was absolutely lambasted by Russell Barkley who is a world renowned expert on ADHD.

There's been a definite push with this stuff to attempt to reframe adhd as something that doesn't need medical intervention - however research shows that the best treatment are the recommended drugs, such as ritalin, dexamphetamine, atomoxetine, and guanfacine.

Definite pattern around minimising adhd and autism, not sure what the end game is.

I used a usb foot pedal with three switches for playing world of warcraft - originally bought it for PTT but realised how useful it was and ended up using it for the speed boost spell and the big damage cooldown.
Re:Carmakers Have a New Idea to Boost EV Range: Add a Gas Engine on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @07:12AM (#49624543)
Electric buses in the UK have been charged with diesel generators and there was a bit of an uproar about it at first, but a large static diesel generator running at a constant speed can be more efficient than multiple stop/start diesel engines, and therefore more friendly to the environment.

Usually seen as a stop-gap until they can get the power upgraded in the depot to support multiple charging buses.

Yes, she was compelling albeit uncanny valley.
Re:Jellyfin 12.0 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @04:00AM (#49622947)
I only used it for a short while - from memory there was no seek, but it could have just been because my chrome tv remote didn't have seek buttons, long press next/previous didn't work.
Re:Jellyfin 12.0 on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @08:23AM (#49609359)
I'm using Wholphin as a client which should just work with v12 but I've not had time to update yet.

I've only really been using jellyfin for a month or two but it's much more user friendly than the xbmc/kodi setup I was using, and the pause/resume between devices is fantastic. I'm totally converted.

There was some major tension in the trailer - I can't believe that's actually Elizabeth Holmes, but seeing her I can see how she managed to win over so many - she is very intense.
Re:QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes on Monday September 07, 2026 @06:20AM (#49596472)
Extremely timely in that I just built a gluetun & qbittorrent container over the weekend - so many exe files...
Re:'Old Person Smell' on Monday September 07, 2026 @05:47AM (#49596238)
I'm allergic to bio washing powders with enzymes, and I typically wash everything at 30c so I've noticed this smell on some of my shirts over the last year or so (I'm 51)

So far to conquer it I gather the shirts with the smell together and wash them with a bio washing powder at 40c, then wash them straight away at 30c with the non bio, I've noticed a huge reduction in the smell and it doesn't irritate my skin and cause eczema - double bonus!

They say that persimmon soap is supposed to be good, or anything with tannins in, but I'll stick to my imperial leather.

I misread the title and thought the same thing, I have the printed book somewhere as well - much more fun than the urban dictionary.
Re:Roget's Thesaurus on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @11:13AM (#49523078)
I misread this and thought it was about Rogers Profanisaurus from The Viz.
I've been wanting to do something like this to stop cats shitting on my grass for ages, will have a look at this, thanks.
I think early deepdream was quite close, where you see artifacts around the image and lots and lots of dogs because of the amount of training images being pet pics - perhaps it's just the way I hallucinate on lsd - perhaps it shows how the brain actually renders the world inside our heads.

"My mum said that if I didn't drink enough milk then I'd only be good enough to play for Accrington Stanley."

"Accrington Stanley!, Who are they?"

"Exaaaccttlyyy...."

This does seem to be more of an effort to bring digital ID in via a backdoor - the proposal is less "under 16 social media ban" rather "over 16 will need to provide id to use social media"

I'd prefer that we had some standardised governmental endpoint that can authorise against a site for us, rather than use multiple individual methodologies to prove

I was considering changing my name to Mark Withasea because I keep getting asked so many times "Is that Mark with a K, or a C?"
Call it extreme if you like, but I propose we hit it hard and hit it fast with a major; and I mean major; leaflet campaign.
SoftIce and IDA were what I instantly thought of.
I'm autistic and have misophonia and hyperacusis, not to mention auditory processing issues which mean I'm more likely to lock on to a noise rather than what I actually would like to listen to.

There's so much noise around - it really does tie in to the "social model of disability" in that a lot of my issues would disappear if environments weren't so hostile - that includes noise, smells, and lights.

I'm just seeing stars, tried a few different devices and a couple of different browsers.

I'm audhd also and the truly disabling part of my neurotype is the fact that I can do things and focus, I just can't choose when and where and what my focus is on.

Reminds me of Gopher / Lynx from back in the day.
Re:Show HN: Autism Simulator on Tuesday October 14, 2025 @05:59AM (#45578138)
I'm Audhd, 50, and my experience mirrors yours, although I can fall asleep earlier, but it's a die throw whether I wake around 3am or sleep fully until 7am.

The worst aspect is that I seem to procrastinate fun things now - like gaming, or making music.

Hope you can find something to help you recharge :)

I was diagnosed with aspergers just as this happened - basically new information came out showing he'd sent the higher support need autistic kids off for experimentation so they'd leave him alone with his lower support needs autistic kids.
Re:Notes on Managing ADHD on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @09:07AM (#45102625)
Way too much information, brain wouldn't let me read it.
I'm diagnosed autistic and ADHD.

A lot of my autistic issues are caused by society because they are mostly sensory - bright lights, random noise, synthetic smells.

The social model of disability doesn't cover all my symptoms and issues though, I am very much disabled. Pre diagnosis and medication my rejection sensitive dysphoria would cause me to perceive sleights and fly off the handle very easily.

5000 years ago I would have had a rock to the head.
