Re:US boy names that became girl names and vice versa on Monday November 02, 2026 @11:59PM (#50348271)
I get the sense that most of the “needlessly gendered” products out there are attempts to make products permissible for men.
Re:Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen on Monday November 02, 2026 @11:54PM (#50348237)
So is the tldr “minor fixes to behavior, no major impacts or significant improvements”?
Re:DiscImageStudio on Monday November 02, 2026 @11:49PM (#50348210)
Aww, bummer. If money was a problem they should have just rubbed some AI on it.
Re:OccupySaaS on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:11AM (#50337059)
Why, though? There are two products listed, and the second one is supposed to replace Salesforce.

Except that already has some of the most textbook-perfect standard and documented API suites on the planet, and full fidelity company data import and export in any of a hundred ways.

There’s already functionally zero lock-in beyond wanting their platform and associated services.

Also, there are already far more mature alternative oss crm packages, where none have never actually threatened Salesforce.

How are you running these? Not locally, I assume?
Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Thursday October 29, 2026 @11:26PM (#50299539)
It seems to mean whatever a person needs it to in any conversation.

And yes, in Star Trek, it mostly just seems to mean that food, clothes, and small clonable objects have very little value if you live where those machines are common.

But, of course, that’s not what people think when we talk about a “post-scarcity utopia”. And they don’t think about how people have homes and property and fuel and ships, or how everything bigger than a wrench is allocated by a mega government that seems to have ultimate control over all resource allocation.

We just have to assume “everything is good somehow, and everyone is fine and docile in luxury space communism.” Because they say that.

It’s all very weird, and easy to see why it was all intentionally left unexplained. It would have been a disaster to even try.

Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Thursday October 29, 2026 @07:08PM (#50297534)
The utopian bits were never really explained, either.

They mostly just said it was all great and fair and nobody needs money and is somehow trying to be their best selves… nevermind the numerous examples to the contrary.

They weren’t really post scarcity. They never explained how they’re not in a constant state of rioting when a weird government/military decides what everyone can have or do.

You just go with it, because that’s the backdrop. You have to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the story.

But also, Picard is the best Captain, by far.

> If instead I were able to specify what was happening in the prompt rather than iOS giving users an ambiguous statement

No. They’re correct, there.

The app developer should not get to provide the message text for a prompt like that.

A secondary note somewhere in less than ten words, maybe, where it explicitly warns that the statement may be false.

Re:Why Is This Fingerprinting Script Creating Bioweapons? on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:56AM (#50290152)
They’re using classifiers for a lot of this stuff separate from the actual model.

I’ve had the model agree that certain prohibited actions or downgrades were false positives and tell me to start a new session.

For some things, once you’ve tripped the tripwire, that session is cooked.

Re:Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:52AM (#50290074)
I’ve now seen two that were also flown to FormLabs to talk to their materials science teams. They sure went all out on influencers.

Doesn’t mean they’re not nice machines, I guess.

Re:Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:50AM (#50290051)
Isn’t part of the point of these ones that they now have a line of safe resins?

Honestly asking. I’ve never owned one. Just seen some of the tsunami of videos for this one.

Re:Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:10AM (#50289345)
Adam Savages Tested did like two whole episodes on it.

I’m ok with it. It’s the kind of thing they would look at. But it did stand out.

Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @02:59PM (#50264056)
The more important question is, “Why do we care?”

It’s what everyone uses… positive, negative, or neutral.

Until something else catches on, there’s no reason to explain, apologize, or duel over it.

Re:Everything on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:41AM (#50260993)
I’m sure KiCad makes super smart mega pros get really angry and fling their feces, but it has done a ton of amazing work for unimportant people like me.

So… my sincere thanks to the people that made it. I’m glad you didn’t wait for universal approval.

Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:03AM (#50259540)
We know what this looks like, over all of human history, and it’s not 300m people living comfortably on checks from the government.

We do need to do something, and soon, but “tax those guys a lot and send the proceeds to government services or pittance checks” isn’t going to cut it.

Re:OLED iPad Mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:20PM (#50247403)
I kinda feel that way too, but I can see why 3% of iphone sales wasn’t a compelling case at apple.
Re:Writing Is Closer to Thought Than Code on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:32AM (#50243388)
You haven’t been reading my comments, pal.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Saturday October 24, 2026 @03:02AM (#50218902)
I wish that Apple today was a little more like the Apple that ruthlessly murdered the floppy disc and Flash.
Re:DNS: A Replacement for Finger on Friday October 23, 2026 @07:14PM (#50216657)
Fun. But a status needs to be updated semi-frequently and my dns service only offers api mgmt for bigger customers.

I guess I could delegate a zone to another provider who does.

Don’t try zip codes. It gives you somewhere in Mexico.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Friday October 23, 2026 @06:44PM (#50216409)
It turns out 99.9999% of iPhone users don’t want what HN wants.

They want what Apple sells.

Re:Is this the new cyber normal? on Friday October 23, 2026 @04:46PM (#50215094)
I’ve found they won’t always comply with adversarial review.

No doubt because us unwashed masses aren’t blessed with the super special “security” ones.

We might be looking for exploits for bad reasons, I guess.

Re:Most advice is right for the person giving it on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @01:35PM (#50184675)
That was my approach, for too long. Lots of coffee and cigarettes. Helped with brain function, too.

It’s a real shame it was literally killing me the whole time.

Re:PHP2Shell: AI uncovers critical RCE in PHP on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @10:13AM (#50181366)
I just got a nostalgia hit remembering all the phpBB type boards.

But also I haven’t seen much of that style of bulletin boards in ages. Maybe the occasional EEVBlog or Ars kinda count?

Re:Whatever Happened to Fire Escapes on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @10:09AM (#50181282)
I remember those often being mentioned in “keep your home prepared in case of fire” educational materials, too. I’ve just never actually seen one.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @05:39AM (#50116241)
It’s incredible engineering right now.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @05:30AM (#50116171)
I think Twitter is the one that actually makes money.

Until they sold all their compute to anthropic, Ai was the boat anchor.

Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @05:21AM (#50116093)
$250k deposit for the mid tier? They’ll be in some Saudi collections for sure.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @04:59AM (#50115916)
Musk, while a horrible presenter, did say something like “we’re doing this here because otherwise everyone would think it’s ai.”
Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Thursday October 15, 2026 @11:27AM (#50105090)
Some stuff you really shouldn’t do just because you saw some youtube videos, and it has fuck-all to do with “government indoctrination.”

I grew up in trades. I’ve seen shit work and dangerous work and serviceable work and beautiful work. And sometimes even I didn’t actually know the difference until an inspector (and family member) explained it.

So I do small stuff. If it’s serious and I can afford it, I use a trusted professional.
