How about yanking the cords, or maybe a big red “shutdown” button

Wow, lobsters seems refreshing! Invite only to contribute must be why they can run on sqlite so effectively. I've run into so many issues with WAL (real time market data) unless I'm painfully deliberate with reads and writes. Don't feel like jumping on the "ohhh invite me" bandwagon, but definitely subscribing to their feed.

Re:Stop using MySQL in 2026, it is not true open source
on Sunday January 18, 2026 @01:17PM (#46670486)
I'm not going to stop using it because it's not "true open source." I'm going to stop using it because there's better databases out there.

I have such fond memories of Graphite's simplicity. Simply hit the server with a metric and value and BOOM it's on the chart, no dependencies, no fuss.

Re:Does OLAP Need an ORM
on Sunday August 17, 2025 @09:24PM (#44936495)
Just expose a way to explore hierarchies and measures, give me an ability to generate "alternate hierarchies" then let me run MDX and leave me alone! ORM and OLAP don't belong in the same sentence together.

No new Zelda, no new Mario. I don't know what Nintendo is doing but I am not a hyped up for the Switch 2 as I thought I'd be.

"only 3-5x faster... rarely makes sense to use Redis" This is an illogical conclusion. 3-5x faster is substantial!
Re:Defragging my old Dell's UEFI NVRAM
on Sunday February 23, 2025 @09:37PM (#43155301)
Short sweet and to the point. Why isn't this a button in the bios, naturally hidden behind a few levels of menus? "Defrag your NVRAM" Other than power failures what would other failure modes be? I guess if the NVRAM has bad cells? Guess it's easier to just reset the whole BIOS whenever there's a problem?

Re:The Great Database Migration
on Monday July 01, 2024 @03:01PM (#40849227)
Game changer for scaling and costs? It’s an 80 MB database that needs to get duplicated by n developers and a test and production instance. They could get away with a $200 beelink under a desk. I see no reason to prematurely scale. I would focus on making things fast and creating a “duplicate database” button so devs can work without interrupting prod
Re:The Great Database Migration
on Sunday June 30, 2024 @01:55PM (#40838726)
"Overall, this migration proved to be a massive success" but their metrics shows this migration resulted in, on average, slower response times. Wouldn't this suggest the migration was not successful. Postgres can be insanely fast, and given the volume of data this post suggests, it baffles me that the performance is so bad.
