News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I'll just note that building an enigma simulator and/or code cracker is a common course project and there are several tutorials on doing so.
How else are we supposed to have claims that we are finding all the vulnerabilities in the world?
Re:Neovim 0.12.0 on Sunday March 29, 2026 @10:27PM (#47569740)
some people still write code
Just had the pleasure of listening to a Turing Award winner, and to answer a question about how to know what issues could come up. His response, "Read science fiction!" helps scientists imagine the future. I'll take his advice and stick to my mostly fiction reading :)
It is a bad thing and anyone who thinks otherwise is acting in bad faith.
Yeah in other professions negligence can lead to jail...
Re:Tools: Code Is All You Need on Thursday July 03, 2025 @01:49PM (#44457523)
Yes, to an extent, but I would say that is an extension of artillery and long-range fire capabilities.
Re:Solving LinkedIn Queens Using Haskell on Tuesday June 24, 2025 @11:23AM (#44367221)
Hmm, an interesting pattern is that every queen is a knight's move away. I haven't thought about this problem since I started dabbling in chess but now looks like a simple pattern.
Exactly! Unfortunately people lap it up as some ground truth when it is a dude providing a theory and as you said “selling it”
I would recommend reading about the Friedman Doctrine and the time period where it came about. It is only a theory and not necessarily a good one.
Re:Zig's dot star syntax (value.*) on Saturday March 08, 2025 @08:17PM (#43305241)
Are you honestly surprised?
The ignorance on this site is a sight to behold at times. A further risk to the aircraft and crew is not to be taken lightly...
As mentioned the paper was accepted in NDSS. https://www.ndss-symposium.org/ndss2025/accepted-papers/ The conference occurs in Feb, and typically, the conference proceedings are published a little earlier than the conference itself.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2025) on Friday January 03, 2025 @06:50PM (#42590776)
Yeah cost of living in TN is verrrryyyyy different than the west coast…

Good luck! Sounds terrible
Re:Will that hub or dock slow your SSDs, or even make them faster? on Wednesday December 25, 2024 @11:53AM (#42509693)
Any decent consumer SSD will be exactly the same, brands such as SK Hynix, Samsung, Crucial, WD, etc. same chips and same performance, much cheaper than the Apple tax.
Pour-over funnels have glass and ceramic options, and the coffee turns out quite tasty.
Re:Updates to H-1B on Wednesday December 18, 2024 @07:12PM (#42456941)
Crazy to think the people who come to US universities to obtain post-bachelor degrees are more qualified than those who didn't... This is purely anecdotal, but my experience at a top institution is that the majority of CS/ECE of MS and PhD programs are foreign students, and the H1B folks I worked with had these advanced degrees.
Shutting down airspace around Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst makes sense if gunnery is happening.

This is a great feature for privacy though

100% correct, but most of those, like the GP sadly, aren't really gonna pay attention.
Re:DuckDuckGo Donates $25,000 to the Perl and Raku Foundation on Wednesday December 04, 2024 @10:15AM (#42318253)
You're last line is why Larry Wall made Perl. I feel you!

take a look under the hood for any Linux distro
Re:You can use C-Reduce for any language on Thursday November 28, 2024 @03:07PM (#42268220)
Because if you aren’t writing in python or JS/TS then it is gibberish. Not like Perl is used all throughout Linux system…
I would say about 95% the software on my MacBook have nothing to do with the App Store. Whether for work, research, normal student stuff.
Re:Clang vs. Clang on Sunday August 04, 2024 @01:39PM (#41155114)
At this time, the idea of a constant-time operation embedded into a language’s semantics is not a thing. Similar for CPU architectures. Our computing base is about being fast and faster.
What a glorious time to be in the field… Crazy to think we have allowed technically incompetent people to make these decisions
To your last point, I’d like to point out there’s an adage that goes along the lines of “the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent…”
Re:Why isn't preprint review being adopted? on Sunday March 24, 2024 @05:16PM (#39810592)
Yes. The crap people publish even with peer-reviews is bad enough. A few subfields in CS have bitten a couple times by relying on non peer reviewed ecosystems.
Re:Experienced engineers are struggling to get hired on Thursday March 14, 2024 @06:56PM (#39709961)
I now understand why people were asking for so much up front…
