Re:Buy Your Friends Batteries on Monday August 17, 2026 @03:49PM (#49336595)
That’s a good point. I had assumed the states allowing plug-in solar also allowed batteries, but according to https://pluginsolarguide.com , it’s only Utah so far.
I don’t understand how that conclusion follows from that comparison. We also wouldn’t describe the current day as “after the flu”. Both are endemic.

Re:I maintain a 17 year old ThinkPad on Thursday April 03, 2025 @08:06AM (#43568454)
I have a relatively high-end desktop with a nice monitor. I also have an aging laptop with a tiny screen and an anemic amount of RAM. Most of my computing ends up being done on the laptop.

With a family and a kid, it turns out I’d prefer to spend most of my time at the computer in common spaces; at the dinner table, on the couch, etc. so that I’m present and available for my family. This is far better than squirreling myself away in a room.

(Note that for work, I have a different computer, I’m talking about for life outside of work.)

Part of Apple clearly wants to do that with Focuses giving more control around what notifications people get in which contexts.

Unfortunately other parts seem to think the opposite. For example, Apple News by default sends notifications for puff pieces like years-in-review rather than just urgent breaking news.

Great explanation.

F-Zero managed to do the “change zoom on each scanline” trick without a coprocessor in the cartridge, didn’t it?

Re:FFmpeg-online: ffpmeg running on the browser on Sunday October 15, 2023 @03:22PM (#37892573)
It’s been possible for years. I’m not sure what a good definition of “practical” would be though.

Fair point.
Re:Everything authenticated by Microsoft is tainted on Friday September 29, 2023 @10:36AM (#37704946)
MS is still probably somewhere in the supply chain of software you use.

They have contributed to the Linux Kernel, they own GitHub and NPM, they make an extremely popular editor, among other things.

It’s a different set of risks than depending on them directly, but they’re still there.

Re:Gitlab Critical Security Release: 16.3.4 and 16.2.7 on Tuesday September 19, 2023 @09:12AM (#37569478)
In practice, customers can also make requests via private support tickets. I’ve seen GitLab determine priority of an issue based partially on demand from paying customers.
This is how a fintech Chief Compliance Officer explained it to me:

The industry that the SEC regulates is full of clever people who have a financial incentive to push rules as far as possible.

The concern is that if they provided a clear line between what is allowed and disallowed, that everyone will go right up to the line and then find creative ways to exploit how it’s defined.

The SEC prefers to keep the line fuzzy so that actors keep their behavior well on the “allowed” side.

Thank you for that answer! Wow, I can't believe how small the team was 6 years ago. Is that 120 engineers or 120 employees total?

Looking forward to seeing GitLab doing this well. It hits a sweet spot for a lot of organizations.

Ah yes, it was called GitHost. Here's the previous page for it https://web.archive.org/web/20190528091645/https://about.git... .

Note that the domain it used to be hosted at (GitHost dot Indian Ocean) is now a possibly-nsfw casino.

If I remember correctly, GitLab used to offer the same kind of service, but discontinued it because managing it was not a core competency that they wanted to focus on. I'm curious what's different now.
The Pirate Bay may never have deleted anything, but they also don't host any of the music. Just because a torrent exists doesn't mean anyone is seeding it.
Re:Podman Desktop: A Free OSS Alternative to Docker Desktop on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @06:32PM (#33539728)
What precisely did the creators of Podman Desktop do that was unethical? I'm not sure if by "ripoff" you mean "copyright infringement" or something else.
I agree that it denotes an imbalance.

I also agree that terms like "white privilege" are intended as criticism. However I don't see them as criticism of the individual who has the privilege, but rather of the society whose circumstances gave them that privilege. The term is an attempt to promote systems thinking.

My associations are mostly neutral. It can even be positive in certain contexts, like "It was a privilege to meet him".
I'm not suggesting one implies the other. Are you saying the only advantage one could possibly have is economic? Or maybe that you'd expect all advantages and disadvantages to be reflected in wealth or lack thereof?
Why do you believe "privilege" is a negative word?

Also, assuming you mean Robin DiAngelo, what of hers have you read? She's pretty clear in both White Fragility and Nice Racism in advocating against "constant, deliberate, self-flaggelation" because they center the person doing it and take energy away from productive action.

Why can't whiteness and wealthiness both be types of privilege?

The author is literally maintaining a fork already https://asahilinux.org/

I do take your larger point about rubber-stamping contributions generally not being a good idea.

Building nuclear plants can't be priority one because we don't have time to wait around for them to be built. We should be building them in parallel with more immediate initiatives that can buy us time.
> And I wonder why in the world they took jobs as lecturers. If you don't have a passion for teaching, why take a job that pays substantially less than what you get in industry?

I don't know about this specific situation, but many professors enjoy and are good at research and see teaching as necessary overhead in their jobs. Professors tend to have much more freedom than people doing research in industry and for some people that's worth it.

Thank you, I had missed that it was moved out of contrib.

This confused me too. The rationale seems to be explained in more detail in https://www.spinics.net/lists/git/msg421817.html
See Cory Doctorow's article about the feudalism of digital platforms (an expansion of Bruce Schneier's idea). The gist is that digital security and compatibility is difficult enough to keep up with that most people conclude serfdom to a platform warlord is worth it.

Re:Apple’s iPhone 14 Redesign for Repair on Monday September 19, 2022 @02:28PM (#32902028)
It would make sense for Apple to tout a replacement connector as being faster, so I'd imagine they would go above the USB 3.0 that Lightning is capable of.

Re:FedNow FAQ on Thursday August 18, 2022 @02:15PM (#32513060)
It's weirder than that. The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve is an agency of the US federal government. The system as a whole has "a combination of public and private characteristics".

See the section "The U.S. Approach to Central Banking" of https://www.federalreserve.gov/aboutthefed/structure-federal... .
