Yes, I read the article. Clearly, you've missed the title that obviously seems to imply that the "fascist" Trump regime is behind the push to target Poitras.
Thanks for being condescending, it really added to the substantive productive discourse I come to HN for ;)
I've been waiting to see how the scraping space moves forward in a post-selenium world. I cut my teeth at startups writing scrapers that walked private facebook groups. It's been curious to see a few interesting innovations that you can read publicly - like containerized "workers" and clever networking hacks to scale. This guy who wrote an only-fans scraper to judge the income disparity of OF creators was pretty interesting [0]

It's odd to see something this naive published by Microsoft. Software arms-dealers currently operate in very similar ways and have equivalent relationships with government that physical arms dealers do. They provide value and provide services that unfortunately are a
necessary evil for nation states, the ability to strike and harm their adversaries via software. Sure, I disagree with the ethics of the situation (as much as I do with the free-agency of arms-dealers who sell AK's to african war lords and missiles to terrorists), but to say they "don't deserve a free pass" is really just a cheap take from Microsoft and largely it's never going to even be Microsoft's decision.
The even more cynical alternative take of the publication is that Microsoft wants governments to prosecute groups who profit from their sloppy work. Which is ironic, since the only reason they write windows exploits is because Microsoft has a de-facto monopoly on government / consumer operating systems.
Because young people look at this kind of content and spend their time trying to emulate it instead of truly improving themselves or taking on greater, more valuable challenges, that have greater rewards.
This is awesome!
Are you planning on adding support for crypto integrations?
Definitely curious on your arch choices for front end? This css / design looks great!
Why would anyone with a "real" job want to live in CA or god forbid move to CA? I'm honestly stunned? Does CA understand how basic economics work? You can hate rich people all you want, but at the end of the day they're the ones starting companies and employing people. When are they going to start thinking about limiting spending instead of just finding more ways to wring dough out of people who make an honest living.
For those who disagree with me, please make an argument that in the U.S. making $120k is not an "honest" living...
Sure, thing. It's hard to find info about this because most info about listing things on Amazon is hidden behind hoards of information from course sellers and "get rich quick with amazon FBA" content.
Essentially, Amazon either wants you to A) register a trademark and your brand (the only way to list things without UPC's and use amazon's internal "fxn" label scheme) or purchase UPC's for each product you sell. UPC's are intended to be the same for your product wherever it ends up on the web and are intended to uniquely identify your products. Technically you could purchase a new UPC for each place you list your items, but that can get expensive. Amazon leverages UPC's to identify items in their warehouses and more importantly trace counterfeit items or food items that could require a recall. It used to be common for people to re-sell existing UPC's but recently amazon has started banning sellers for this practice. Having expensive UPC's is also a way to make the barrier to entry higher, making sellers on Amazon really have to want to sell on amazon.
The game theory and psychology of it all is pretty interesting.
I wonder how they'll feel about amazon's use of bots to scrape the internet for other retailers using the same UPC codes registered to sellers items on amazon. Amazon penalizes sellers who offer their amazon items for less on other online retailers.
Also, UPC codes are entirely controlled by a single company called GS1, start at $25 each. It's also worth noting that GS1 has been compromised multiple times, allowing overseas hackers to list "copycat" products with cloned UPC's defrauding legitimate sellers. Ironically, invalidating the whole reason UPC codes were invented in the first place.
I've gotta' be honest, this post makes me miss my time living in the Bay Area, Los Altos specifically.
I don't think I'll ever live anywhere else again where one neighbor couldn't fit his new McLaren 720s in his 70's ranchburger garage after a brief drizzle or my other neighbor who no joke - had a red VW bug with a bumper sticker that read "Ham Radio Saves Lives".
The problem with mercury vapor lamps with a broader spectrum is that they produce ozone gas. I've observed this first hand with a philips UV bulb I purchased. Even though this lamp supposedly has a "doping" agent to help block unwanted wavelengths that produce ozone.
Yeah, far UVC is great for the exact reason that it's far less harmful to human skin. However, "far uvc" (207-222nm) leds are even
more expensive. Many far uvc devices aren't available to general consumers (to control demand). The units that are available to the general population are incredibly expensive, at least $2k for a lamp large enough for use in a small bedroom.

The fact that people are flagrantly supporting her as a "victim" is truly troubling, it's clear she is both the aggressor and abuser. In what world is a PHD / professor publicly shaming and lamenting graduate students over seeming ideological differences not a fucked up situation? The replies to this tweet are golden, most "asking to be added to the list". Our boy @paulg even got in on the action.
Being a white colonialist in any form should be illegal!
Me too! Favorite skill I picked up during quarantine.
After being locked inside for months and trying to start a few of my own side hustles - I'm now convinced that the barriers to "success" outside of a salary or specific industry (even discounting intelligence and raw "ability") is motivation. Simply motivation. How much you truly want something. Being honest with the answer to that question and asking yourself if you'd be happy with your current answer in three years has fundamentally changed the way I set goals, motivate myself and look at life.
It's why plenty of smart people don't make lots of money, why dumb people at times can strike it big, and an interesting mental fringe to find a way out of the rat race / salary man ladder.
The behavior of the ATF seems reminiscent of the Russians prodding US air defense systems by flying bombers right on the periphery. They want to see what they can get away with and what causes too much hubbub. Like you mentioned, their latest action with pistol braces seems to follow this questionable line of unlawful infringement and overreach.
What a load of BS. At what point is a block of billet aluminum, CNC machines and / or STL files going to require "government oversight"?
Technically a felon could sharpen a stick and stab someone. Is the tree at fault for not serializing the fallen branch?
This is great. However, even as a Biden voter I find the latest ruling regarding state election laws deeply troubling. It basically sets a precedent that election laws can now be permanently finagled.
He can't hire a nanny? Isn't the cost/benefit analysis obvious?
For the record, I mean not having to be social and abstaining from consuming alcohol. You people are no fun.
Yep, politics aside I'm very pro vaccine. Vaccines have done amazing things for the world and anti-vaxxers especially those with resources to influence hundreds if not thousands of others are horrible people.
However, a vaccine that's been rushed through gives me pause. To be honest, I'm mostly worried about cognitive and cardiovascular side effects. I've distanced thus far and remain covid free even though I've been in NYC the whole time. It'd be stupid to throw all that away because I got side effects from the vaccine.
Unfortunately, I think the pledge of past presidents to be "vaccinated on tv" is poorly thought out, largely because it will basically just sow conspiracies that they "just had saline injections to influence the masses".
<<3>>
However, this will likely be taken care of for me, because I'm 1) not an essential healthcare worker, 2) not a senior citizen and 3) live in a large urban area. Those people will get the vaccine first, and in mid-june (or later) based on the fallout of the vaccine if things seem normal I'll get it.
They're not including them because this site, although portraying itself as an act of outreach and charity in a sense, is really just angling for even cheaper and misguided labor than is currently available in the US. (obviously, this does not apply to companies that have been founded in Africa. I'm pointing to the Amazon, Uber and MSFT listings)
We should by all means support companies in africa, Ghana is an incredible source of genuine groundbreaking businesses. I've visited and can attest to this first hand. However, the big tech co's posting here really just seems like the 21st century form of colonialism. Taking advantage of a market that unlike the US still doesn't see the less "happy" side of these huge tech companies in light of these tech companies having to put up with H1B legislation in the US that actually treats immigrant workers fairly. Which means big tech can't treat hoards of H1B's as modern day slave labor.
Go Africa! But this website left a bad - very suss taste in my mouth.
Secret is in the sauce my friend ;)
Totally agree, I have a number of non-tech related side hustles and quite frankly I prefer these to tech ones because they took maybe 50hrs each to setup and 2 hours max per week to operate. I know for a fact it'd take much more time tech wise to get something of equivalent revenue up and running.
I have to question these "I spent years making $40 a month working 8 hours after hours to built <project> but now <project> makes $60k a month" stories, since at some point you really have to ask yourself how much your time is worth. Thousands of hours for $1M pre-tax, not to mention how much life you gave up for that is kind of idiotic IMO.
My metric generally is, "if someone on etsy selling magic rocks is making more than my tech project after three months, time to move on". I'm not being shitty, this is just a standard I hold myself to when it comes to valuing my personal time. Also, don't worry, I'm not one of these people who thinks my time isn't worth cooking or cleaning (like many YT gurus and even Financial Samurai now claim).
I'd generally still argue that marketing is the hardest part of any side-hustle / startup in general. What is lost on many here is that $100/mo. spend on solid marketing could speed up the growth curve (without that much more engineering effort) so that it would take maybe a year instead of three to reach the point you could quit your day job.
We had the same issues at Amazon. We all had the lowest end spec of the 2019 13" macbook pro (issued in 2019), even SDE3 level engineers. It fucking sucked.
