For those looking for cryptocurrency news I've been working on ThinkLiberte over the past several months: https://www.thinkliberte.com/hub/cryptocurrency
BT have just this week installed fibre to my house. While most of the last mile is copper it is wrong to say "Everything is copper" particularly when you consider in a vast majority of cases now the cable from exchange to the cabinet is fibre.

On Azure I believe your MSDN entitlements carry over so you could create a VM on Azure and keep it offline until you need it.

Within the EU. For example if you have a turnover of £100k all from outside of the EU you don't need to register.
Re:Unreal Engine Marketplace now open on Friday September 05, 2014 @06:46AM (#8273193)
With UE4 you can pay for a single month and retain full access to the tools you've paid for, you just don't get updates. What you could decide on doing is paying every few months when an update comes along that offers something you need / want.
Re:How Azure Web Sites Sucked in Production on Thursday May 15, 2014 @10:46AM (#7749695)
Not only is the shared tier a preview product it also releases itself from memory when inactive which results in a slow warm up after this happens and a visitor lands on your site.

Great for a personal blog but for a business where your customers expect things instantly, it is not so good.

When you've dug yourself into a hole you should stop digging.
Re:New Google Sheets: faster, more powerful, and works offline on Thursday December 12, 2013 @04:27AM (#6893612)
Recently I have been working on a project with a client where we have been using SkyDrive and its online Excel for simple and basic collaboration on a few documents.

The thing that I love about this setup is having the original Excel document sat there on the skydrive ready to be edited in the full Excel when more advanced editing is required and seamlessly updated on the web (although not at the same time, which is something I hope will be possible in the future).

Re:Edward Snowden voted Guardian person of the year 2013 on Monday December 09, 2013 @09:05AM (#6874328)
Is it surprising really? This guy has given them a dump of documents that they are milking for every penny its worth.
Re:Ask HN: How to safely switch to programming? on Sunday November 10, 2013 @05:00AM (#6705922)
Perhaps you should look into the investment banking divisions who are more algo focussed or those companies who provide services to those firms. That way you will have the best of both worlds
Re:Poll: What's your favorite bug tracker? on Sunday June 16, 2013 @12:27PM (#5888916)
I am a big fan of TFS particularly since it allows for the feedback client to be used to get direct feedback (Video, Audio, Screenshots etc) into it from selected users in a very unintimidating way.
Re:How to share your data effectively on Monday April 08, 2013 @03:29PM (#5513935)
I don't have the full picture here but by moving away from an Excel format you are also potentially taking away a lot of control they have themselves over managing the data and working the data which Excel is extremely good at with little to no programming.
Re:How to share your data effectively on Monday April 08, 2013 @03:25PM (#5513911)
XLSX and the other OpenXML formats are generally speaking very easy to query, particularly as Microsoft provide their OpenXML SDK to do it with as well as other 3rd party tools provide similar functionality.
Re:Django with Visual Studio on Wednesday February 27, 2013 @11:45AM (#5293256)
In my personal experience with working in .NET MVC within VS 2012 it is noticeably slower working with Debug always on as you cannot simply build and refresh the code, each time you need to load the debugger, test drop out of debug, fix, repeat.

I prefer to do as much without debugger and then when I need to inspect variables and step through code drop into debug mode.

With Python this may be different but I doubt it. I expect you will have to wait while the debugger loads up. If you can edit code whilst debugger is running then I can see that being a big plus and a reason to keep it on.

Re:Django with Visual Studio on Wednesday February 27, 2013 @11:41AM (#5293225)
I agree with you, however I like to have my main solution explorer on the left with second solution explorer scoped to my Models or another project I am actively working with within the solution docked on the right.

I wonder if they kept the default layout to keep it as simple and "out of the box" as they can in order not to confuse newcomers to the Visual Studio way of doing things.

Re:Ask HN - what service do you use, for emails? on Sunday February 24, 2013 @10:08AM (#5274436)
I am using Mandrill at the moment and am very happy with them, not do any large volume sends yet but I am using their inbound API which is great. I have dealt with support twice and they have been very responsive and helpful.

I do hope there is another Banjo Kazooie - not the nuts and bolts kind but a classic platformer even if it is not published by Rare I would still love to see it!
Re:Ask HN: Where can I find salespeople to market to? on Sunday September 30, 2012 @02:19PM (#4593559)
LinkedIn would be an obvious choice to find people
Looks like I will have to start using IE then
My feeling is that this will be a hit because imagine finding there are some great applications you use daily on your Laptop in the WinRT mode and now you can take them with you on your Surface device. As a developer and consumer I am very excited about this and from an enterprise view consider being able to re-use a lot of your code base to make these applications for your workers - excellent!

I haven't used windows 8 so I don't know if it feels like a disaster to use on a desktop but I am hoping and assuming once I get used to not having a start button I will be quite happy using it and will love jumping into RT for the more funky fun stuff.

Students can get VS and other MS software for free through various programs such as MSDNAA

The currency conversion works when using the .UK site but the others dont.

I must admit I also miss from Google the define: word but these little things are not enough for me to ever go back to Google!

Re:Google Opens London Campus on Thursday March 29, 2012 @11:33AM (#3771503)
If I was a person from outside of the UK and looking to setup a business in the UK I would absolutely not choose London as my base! I understand all of the reasons in favour of London but I think there are better alternatives. London is full of the type of people who like to make a lot of noise but get little done, costs are extortionate and you can get most of the benefit of London from outside.

My personal choices would be a city along one of the major rail routes into London or one of the major University cities. So they would be Bath, Bristol, Oxford, Cambridge and perhaps Birmingham / Warwick. In fact most of these cities have their own start up friendly environments that are linked with the universities and plenty of VC and PE firms in those cities. All of which are less expensive and much more welcoming and friendly places to be, less ego too!

I wish there was an application like this for Windows!
Re:Visual Studio '11' Announced on Thursday February 23, 2012 @04:47PM (#3626940)
It looks like they are implementing the functionality from a lot of the plugins available for VS2010 and making them standard functionality.

My biggest issue with VS2010 is the amount of memory it consumes. I hope they do something about that or some how let me disable functionality that I don’t need so I can reduce the footprint.

Some of the icons in the screenshots do in my mind look to be an improvement whilst others are so totally different that I am sure will frustrate the hell out of me until I have adjusted.

I know those screenshots are to show off as many widgets as possible but is it useful to show the tool with about 10% screen real estate dedicated to actual code.
