Can someone tell me what it means that "float is unsafe"? I'd never heard about that.
Re:Bflat: C# as you know it but with Go-like tooling on Friday June 25, 2021 @03:02PM (#27634933)
Shouldn't it be D flat instead?
It's funny when radical progressivists in my country try to translate the "white male" cliché into our local context, because white (as in caucasian white) people are are less than 5% of our population.
Re:How Hard is your Email to Say? (2020) on Friday June 11, 2021 @03:50AM (#27470461)
In Spanish-colonized countries we have first name, second name, first surname and second surname so we have a bigger space to choose from. I have [email protected], which is a little long, but very easy to say and listen (my name and surnames are relatively common). And my HN username is the concatenation of the initials of my 4 names.

Thanks.

What if only some components in my page require Javascript? Can the same "partial hydration" be achieved?

Re:Astro: Ship Less JavaScript on Tuesday June 08, 2021 @06:43PM (#27442058)
Is it possible to achieve the same thing just with Svelte + SvelteKit and some configs?

Binance UI feels like a labyrinth if you're a begginer. Coinbase is much simpler.
Re:HW accelerated Xwayland rendering for Nvidia merged on Friday April 09, 2021 @06:03PM (#26756752)
Tangential: some say that Wayland has inherently higher latency due to its design (because vsync is always on?)

Is that true?

Re:My self-study plan for electrical engineering on Saturday March 20, 2021 @04:54PM (#26526008)
I've wanted to do the same for a while now, but I'm unable to find a curriculum that lists the textbook for each subject.

It looks like the article author is just "guessing" textbooks. I'm browsing the U. Waterloo curriculum and it doesn't specify any books.

The article is still useful, don't get me wrong, but I would love to see a list of the textbooks that are actually used at a university program. I've Googled it many times and I only find the names of the courses.

Is the bandwith loss significant between USB 3.0 and SATA (for an average SSD)?

For the last couple of years I've been wanting to learn about how and when recycling works, cost comparison between recycled products and new products, environmental impact of landfill vs recycling, etc.

I don't know where to look for information.

What books should I read? what websites have good information and explanations? whom should I trust?

They put ads on Twitter saying the had closed their positions. Why would someone put ads on Twitter saying that? They're either lying or playing 4D chess.

Humor is just held to higher standards compared to other forums. Most of us can't attain that standard so we don't make humorous comments.
Re:Tinnitus Treatment from Neuromod on Friday October 16, 2020 @02:09PM (#24803398)
I've been following tinnitus research and the most promising treatment is FX-322 [1]. It's a drug that will treat hearing loss, but it could also help diminish tinnitus.

It's currently in phase 2a [2] and results come out next year [3].

I can't stop thinking about creating my own operating system from scratch --similar to what Andreas Kling is doing with Sereneity OS-- but arriving at a usable state would probably take me 15 years, since I'm not even 10% as knowledgeable as Andreas.

I often think I should forget about this project altogether and focus on a viable one.

It has had slow performance since I started using it 3 years ago.
Re:Zig's New Relationship with LLVM on Monday September 28, 2020 @12:51PM (#24618656)
I want to like Zig, but I just hate the

syntax.

I know it's an extremely superficial observation, but it just doesn't feel good to me.

Re:It used to be simpler to teach Unix on Sunday September 27, 2020 @09:03PM (#24611766)
I learned a ton from the first 6 chapters of "How Linux works: what every super user should know", 2nd edition.

A 3rd edition is coming out on March 2021.

Re:It used to be simpler to teach Unix on Sunday September 27, 2020 @08:57PM (#24611714)
The difficulty of learning Linux doesn't lie in what flags you should pass to ls, or other GNU core utils idiosyncracies.

The difficulty lies in making sense of the stack of different pieces of software that make up a Linux system, and the terminology we use to communicate about them (e.g. what mounting a filesystem means, which was initially hard for me to understand, coming from Windows).

The root of this problem is that iPhones don't allow their owners to install software without jailbreaking their devices.

Any real solution must be pointed at fixing that problem, either convincing people to stop buying Apple devices or beating Apple in the trade war they started.

Re:We need physical audio kill switches on Sunday September 20, 2020 @02:58PM (#24536386)
I use a dynamic range compressor when dealing with unpredictable output (watching Youtube videos, Zoom calls).

On Linux, I use this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=typM_AQUzi4

On Windows, I tick the "Loudness Equalization" option in the output device's menu.

I disable it when I listen to music.

Re:Your Phone Is Your Castle on Sunday September 13, 2020 @07:42PM (#24464901)
My phone is a plunger: a tool that I don't like using, but need to use anyway.
I don't like Night Light because the minimum filter level ("less warm") is still too intense for me. Increasing the range of the slider in that direction would fix this.

There's also the need to use a schedule, as opposed to simply enabling/disabling the filter at any time. But I noticed I can get around that limitation by setting the schedule from 20:00 to 19:59 and then using the global toggle.

Could you expand a bit on this? Are you referring to DXVK? Or does Zink have support for DirectX?
