Re:Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @11:14AM (#50088907)
Annoying when you are not home and they deliver things early. Like last week I picked deliver on the 13th, half the items arrived on the 10th and sat on my porch for 2 days.
Re:Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @11:11AM (#50088855)
It is surprising how often they are cheaper. I was ordering some glue, decided to double check the price, I could drive for 30 minutes and buy local, and pay more or order it for cheaper from Amazon. I didn't need it the same day so getting it tomorrow didn't matter. Amazon also sells everything need some M2 screws Amazon will have them, no idea where to buy something like that locally Home Depot won't carry them.
Re:Allow Carriers on Planes on Friday September 25, 2026 @11:38AM (#49846082)
I can drive for 5 hours, or take the 1 hour flight. The one hour flight has a total time of over 5 hours when you include getting to the airport, clearing security and getting bags at the other end. Plus I will not have a vehicle. For one person the cost is probably a wash, for two or more driving will be cheaper. 1000 miles does tip towards flying. Under 300 miles driving is going to be way less hassle to drive.
Re:It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell on Monday August 31, 2026 @10:47AM (#49510448)
I had one food delivery driver call me while standing in the middle of the street. Seemed like he was afraid to approach and knock or ring. So strange.
Are they doing an edition a every couple of years now? I think I have the 4th edition rules, but haven't painted or played in like 12 years. I do have some of my nicely painted models on display in a cabinet. I mostly stopped buying models when GamesWorkshop stopping letting the UK stores sell online as their models were really cheap compared to what they sold them for in Canada.
I don't really understand how blurring out a house adds privacy. Looking around my neighborhood on Google street view I sometimes find houses that are blurred, now that otherwise normal looking house is now suspicious. Because I am physically close I can just look at the house if I wanted to. Someone "special" lives there.
BC stopped emission testing 10ish years ago because new cars almost never fail so there wasn't much value continuing the program.
Re:CarPlay Is Additive on Friday July 03, 2026 @01:42PM (#48777680)
I added a new head unit to my 13 year old Santa Fe, it is like a new car now, wireless Android Auto. Connects quick, bigger nicer screen. Should allow me to keep the car for another 10 years assuming I don't blow up another engine, only the first one is free.
Re:Nano Banana 2 Lite on Tuesday June 30, 2026 @02:28PM (#48737126)
Just having a good photographer is amazing. When my friend was selling their place I was amazed and how good the house looked in the listing. How big it looked, when I know it was not big. This was before AI filters were available. So not a new issue but certainly made worse and cheaper to do.
And time. I have archived some of my collection, but it does take a lot of time to rip the disks, test that they worked correctly. Then years later find out you did something wrong and there is no sound anymore, or you just got stereo and the surround mix is broken.

Streaming is so easy, don't need to find a disk. Load it, watch all the ads and warnings.

Slack is similar Shift enter in normal text. Enter in a code block, shift enter sends in a code block.

Looks like an April 1st article, but there is no date on it.
Re:ICAO issued new power bank restriction on flight on Sunday March 29, 2026 @12:55PM (#47564878)
New planes don't have screens, they may have free wifi to watch stuff on your device. Of the 6 planes I have been on in the last two weeks only one had screens. Just back from vacation :)
Re:ICAO issued new power bank restriction on flight on Sunday March 29, 2026 @12:48PM (#47564809)
On recent WestJet flights they announced that you can't use a power bank if there is seat power available, all the flights had seat power except the smallest plane (Dash 8) and that flight was only 18 minutes. They also didn't want any batter powered devices in the overhead compartments.

On the 737s there were only two plugs per 3 seats so not everyone could be plugged in.

Unlike google glass they don't look weird. Unless you know what to look for you will probably just think they are ray bans.
Though they should be on in store wifi. The big steel box store is a faraday cage that doesn't let the internet in.
I guessed this was coming after you couldn't cast to a device that was logged into a different account. Would be a nice experience to be able to cast Paw patrol from one of the kids accounts instead of cluttering the in-laws view history with kids shows.
Re:NY smartphone ban has made lunch loud again on Wednesday November 05, 2025 @11:13AM (#45824579)
Just until they are shutdown to put in pickleball for retirees.
With rates of drivers hitting overpasses mediocre is a high target here.

Content creators still have their embedded ads. You just avoid all the non-skippable you tube ads
Re:The Promised LAN on Wednesday July 23, 2025 @05:57PM (#44664462)
I had a lanboy? case that came with a carry strap. The case was also mostly aluminum so it was pretty light. Not many people had laptops back then. Managers at work maybe had one. Most people had a proper desktop.
This does not appear to be support by SOAP or WCF. From the SOAP specification:

"Bindings MAY provide for streaming when processing messages. That is, SOAP nodes MAY begin processing a received SOAP message as soon as the necessary information is available. SOAP processing is specified in terms of SOAP message infosets (see 5. SOAP Message Construct). Although streaming SOAP receivers will acquire such XML infosets incrementally, SOAP processing MUST yield results identical to those that would have been achieved if the entire SOAP envelope were available prior to the start of processing. For example, as provided in 2.6 Processing SOAP Messages, identification of targeted SOAP header blocks, and checking of all mustUnderstand attributes is to be done before successful processing can proceed. Depending on the representation used for the XML infoset, and the order in which it is transmitted, this rule might limit the degree to which streaming can be achieved."

https://www.w3.org/TR/soap12-part1/

The critical note is the output for streamed, or buffered must the the same so it does not look like infinite streams can be supported.

I also played with your sample application to see if there was any indication of the connection dropping.

I had an interesting result switching to the NetTcp binding. On the client it is unable to exit until the max size of the incoming message is hit. The server continues running as there are no sent message quotas.

Re:Ask HN: What kind of tech podcasts do you enjoy? on Thursday March 13, 2025 @12:14PM (#43354739)
Behind the tech with Kevin Scott - Interesting conversations generally at a high level.

Maintainable - How to maintain software. Sometimes practical advise.

The Pragmatic Engineer - This one is pretty new

Dev Interrupted - I am subscribed but skip sometimes.

Stack Overflow - Has become an ad. I have listened since the original we are building a question answer site pod cast.

This worked for me as well. I just asked the eye doctor for something that would work just past my out stretched finger tips which is where my monitor lives.

What kills me is going into the office where I am switching between glasses. Different rooms with different Zoom screens. At home is much nicer where I just have one big monitor to watch.

I take my glasses off to read my phone most of the time. Technically my primary glasses are progressives but it is nicer to take them off.

Re:May 5, Microsoft's Skype will shut down for good on Friday February 28, 2025 @11:18AM (#43207328)
Google Duo is gone. The functionality has moved to Meet, causing much confusion for non-technical users and annoyance for everyone.
Re:George R.R. Martin has co-authored a physics paper on Thursday January 23, 2025 @01:14PM (#42806398)
I still remember seeing the first 3 paperbacks in the store. Thinking ahh a nice finished trilogy, what a trick that was.
Yes, once they can not lead their party effectively they will usually resign. It has been building to this over the last month or so.
Re:Why so many families are "drowning in toys" on Friday November 22, 2024 @11:05AM (#42214923)
Not to mention the really cheap plastic stuff given away in gift bags when it is someone's birthday. Small non-functional yo-yo's balls with paddle. etc. Since you can't give food or candy for fear of nuts.

For things like LEGO they are mostly specific sets, so they get built and displayed like models by my kids. Rarely to they build random stuff like I did when I was little, with only a small amount of LEGO.

Re:The Death of the Minivan on Wednesday October 02, 2024 @10:52AM (#41721218)
If you have more than 2 kids the minivan is the clear winner. A two row SUV can't hold 3 car seats, and even a 3 row SUV will have trouble, plus strapping kids in is way harder.
Re:An AI bot-war destroyed the online job market on Sunday July 28, 2024 @01:45PM (#41094689)
This is worse than a ghost job. HR running the hiring process when no team has a position. Even worse for the person applying as they are wasting more time than just sending their resume and cover letter to /dev/null @ corp.
