Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @12:02AM (#50284408)
Fewer than 1,000? To be honest, even before AI, I'm surprised it ever got more than 50 or a 100 in some StackExchanges. It was on borrowed time especially after reading a lot about the moderator drama/issues.
Re:Decompiling Fast Food Tycoon 2: Drawing the World on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:15PM (#50282312)
I've never played this game, neat! But with all this decompiling, maybe someone will make an open source, neat sequel to Math for the Real world? that would be cool.
The best thing in my opinion is using the TurboTax Desktop software, installing it on a VM and spinning that up only when you need to do taxes. The import/export relies on tax files from the previous season, but they seem to essentially be slightly encrypted archives.
What do you mean when you say 'formalize'? I mean, a full tax document is just each form with each 'line' as an entry by itself and then at the end, all the calculations get performed against that.

Admittedly I don't really know about dutch/some other regions -- could you expand on that?
Modifying existing PDFs in my limited experience is to make some changes or remove security or add a stamp and it make it seem official.

reading these comments are so interesting to me. I would've thought a video is a video, but I guess maybe there's some codec settings behind the scenes? On Firefox, I get the washout. On Brave/Chrome, it looks normal.

I resigned a year ago, L65. The service I worked on was 5 engineers, within a few months’ time it was just me. Was always rated a 140 come connect season.
How did this system work?
>My Spanish teacher was a Colombiana and she always pointed out the innate patriarchal traits of the Spanish language while rolling her eyes.

Was the eye roll part of the sarcasm or...? Colombian and other related Spanish speaking cultures do the same things, so what's her point, to feel like she's sticking it to the invisible spanish dude?

Re:Show HN: A Truly Modular Keyboard on Monday October 26, 2026 @02:37AM (#50239911)
Just a small suggestion but... maybe re-record your demo without giant floodlights on your desk? :(
I think there's a difference between a standard PDF viewer and basic functionality, vs a full PDF authoring suite like Adobe. For some of the basic features in one of the comments, I'm not quite sure how tried and tested tools that are simple like Foxit PDF don't fit the bill for most things. Unless you're trying to process gobs of PDFs in headless mode or do some sort of analysis... eh.
Sometimes, the essence of a story and end goals has more value than the actual finding and story itself. Most us probably don't know this is part of a documented feature, and this is the first time I'm hearing of SmartThings integration. I'm still not quite sure what the point of these detection are.
Re:SimCity, but with Permits on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @03:14PM (#50171272)
Please god stop making the x to close windows on the middle or the left. Majority of people who using computers are using Linux or Windows where it's on the upper right and it's a muscle memory. You aren't being clever or helping. I get that in some cases you may want people to read the information you have and pause a bit more, but it just irritates me and does not make me want to engage with whatever it is if I have to waste so much more time closing every window as a result. It literally wastes an exponential amount of time.

If this was an installable, moddable game, this would be cool. Further, I'm not sure why they could not add this as an existing module or feature within SimCity 3000 itself. It's a nice little wanna be clone. But playing a browser game just doesn't feel like a game.

A friend of mine is getting into AI more than I am and seems to like doing random coding tasks to see what it can do. Like, coding a clock app in Window with NTP/PTP. Or coding a multi swarm agent that is so poorly designed it hurts my soul. I want to say the clock app came in at 300 Mb and god knows how much memory usage it was pulling. LLMs have all these different pieces but it still doesn't know the optimization that an engineer might know with experience. Because of the amount of slop being generated, we're essentially line workers that deal with automation being implemented in factories. Very much the the technology version of the 'American Factory' documentary on Netflix. Unless we're at the forefront of this SOTA hotness, we're behind in all aspects.
They may not be related, but having a good understanding of the psychological NLP actually lends it self really well to NLP and prompt engineering. As much as a lot of people 'claim' it to be parapsychology (even within this thread), check out books like Strategies of Genius and how it breaks down a lot of the main concepts. It's very 'meta-cognition' if you will, but, the parallels are eye opening given how long the concepts have been around. If someone has never done serious mind mapping or brain storming and entity-node relationship type work with databases, it would be quite a leg up helping them understand and mentally map out concepts like that.
Re:AI-assisted PCB design for KiCad 10 on Friday October 16, 2026 @12:40PM (#50120702)
Aren't there tools that could do a lot of the structure for a PCB/device like using Verilog? I feel like that's way you can do a lot of this work headless and then use KiCad or other tools to do the checking.
I'm sorry that happens, though now I'll be curious to be on the lookout for this when I take it.

Out of curiosity, does that effect subside fairly quickly e.g. once the drug half life and has exited your system, do you crave/can you eat chicken fairly comfortably?

Re:Tesla Roadster on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:20PM (#50113105)
I absolutely detest the leadership and what he is actively doing to this country... but holy fucking shit. I want to reserve one, but when you're broke as a joke... ooph.
When we say food 'aversion', we're implying that a drug like metformin makes you not want that thing, yes?

I've found when I take metformin, and then eat food later, I enjoy the food so much more as a craving/satiation thing. Especially steaks. But I'm not quite sure why that is. I can't say that what peers have told me about metformin is to help with weight loss, but supposedly the benefits/effects on the body are generally positive.

Re:Mozilla Introduces Firefox Enterprise on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @09:47PM (#50081403)
Sure, but Firefox has had that for a while/has MSIs for 'Enterprise. I'm just trying to understand the delta here.

https://firefox-admin-docs.mozilla.org/reference/policies/

Maybe I'm missing what you're getting at with the point about centralized logging and some of the DLP but I'm not sure why we would be okay with breaking a browser's trust in that way, DLP and proxy gateways have been pretty standardized for a while. At least with Chrome, it makes sense if you're a Google shop and have access to a lot more tie-ins. Maybe that's the point.

Re:Mozilla Introduces Firefox Enterprise on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @08:58PM (#50081081)
I'm not sure I understand the goals of this. Will this have any better blocking built in? Or is it just Enterprise governance things? Because I want Firefox to have things like uBlock/uMatrix built in and can be controlled by a centralized list locally hosted. Shit like that would be amazing. Can I tell it to allow/disallow certain sites and disable scripts globally? I don't know.
I'll have to do more research in this but I'm curious what prompts they used and if they had a software development/clean room background because the videos I've been watching and content covering the first version of this said it was very painful/ a lot of things were broken. Sure AI does some testing, but are people using slicers with their UIs to make sure things match? Are people checking these things to see they do what is intended?
Re:When did Google get so f-ing weird? on Sunday September 27, 2026 @05:06PM (#49870842)
I still believe this AI push out of nowhere is due to the current Government in power state side. Making everyone question themselves and each other and being uncertain about facts while being inundated with techbro fake news called hallucinations is a recipe for disaster for older populations that don't 'trust but verify' like most technology inclined people. This is all by design and we'll falling for it.
Re:When did Google get so f-ing weird? on Sunday September 27, 2026 @05:04PM (#49870825)
How did you google this, and did you use the dumb search, or specifically 'AI mode' lens?

Because I did this and got a vastly different result from you:

Yes, the Halifax Wanderers can still mathematically qualify for the 2026 Canadian Premier League (CPL) playoffs. The top four teams advance to the postseason. Following their 1-0 loss to Atlético Ottawa on September 26, 2026, the Wanderers sit in fifth place, just below the playoff line.

With a indexed table of the games and the playoff table, with a breakdown of what the points they need to achieve to do so.

The search window may not always crawl sources. AI mode specifically does some research before giving you a response. Not sure what you're on about.

It's weird to see that any towns even remotely close to Austin would support Flock at all in the first place.

It must be nerve wracking to live in your shoes day to day. This is, probably due to flying through an airport like JFK. I'm also not sure what you mean by heavily armed agents. Most MPs at airports just have pistols on them.
>ribbon connector pieces

ribbon connector like ribbon cables used in IDE/PATA drives? Wild, are they known for breaking down like that?
