Re:Mozilla Introduces Firefox Enterprise on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @01:50PM (#50075770)
The money Mozilla gets from Google comes with some sort of gentlemen's agreement where they try to avoid disrupting Google's business. It's nice if they diversify their revenue so they can become more independent.
Re:Mozilla Introduces Firefox Enterprise on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @01:41PM (#50075644)
Not surprisingly it's easy for a organization to trust Mozilla Corporation than to trust a random Canadian guy.
Re:Anthropic wants your thoughts on AI on Monday October 05, 2026 @01:46PM (#49968004)
Wouldn't that skew the results with a bias towards people who are doing it for money?
Re:Gitea 28.0 on Saturday October 03, 2026 @11:56PM (#49950477)
So... Where they using semver in the previous versions, never implemented API breaking changes and decided to drop the "1.x" because it was providing no information at all?
Some old twitter users still have animated gif avatars that stop being supported years ago. Maybe their approach is to just stop supporting it for new avatars and grandfathering whoever manage to upload one before.

Someone could make a site that just computes the difference between hacker news and unslop news.
Re:Tell HN: OpenAI keeps re-enabling the 'allow training' setting on Thursday September 10, 2026 @08:11PM (#49651843)
Reminds me the days people would write Micro$oft (usually in Linux vs Windows discourse).

It's funny to think that back in the days we used to think the most evil thing a company could do was charging money for their software. Today we even praise some companies because they are "less evil" and they actually charge money, instead of giving the service for free and mining our data (e.g. Fast Mail vs Gmail; or Kagi vs Google).

Re:Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker on Monday September 07, 2026 @01:53PM (#49600998)
> I decided to download Moviemake and buy the Digital Plus pack r so I went to Microsoft.com

That "r" from "Moviemaker" pushed to the end of "and buy the Digital Plus pack" displays the universally shared experience of writing something, then deciding to come back to add something else and fucking up the first sentence.

I've been there too, Bill.

Re:XCancel also down, at least for time being on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @11:22PM (#49443864)
And Twitter used to have free API access. And Facebook Messenger used to have Jabber compatibility. I don't think those companies deserve any trust in regards of promoting them for their open initiatives.

Threads' activity pub gimmick is just a nice to have. It's the salad of the Big Mac. If you're going to eat it anyway, sure, glad it is there, but it doesn't make it deserve a spot in any serious discussion about healthy food alternatives.

Didn't worked so well for the Pokémon show.
Re:Every Fucking Website (2020) on Friday August 14, 2026 @02:53PM (#49303057)
It's more like a cultural expectation that business do shady things and the "clown makeup" is a compromise that government found between making those shady things illegal (utopia) and don't intervene at all and let the corporations set their rules (dystopia).

It's like those warnings in cigarettes packages saying they will kill you. I know cigarettes are bad, but the warnings also make me believe there's at least "some" control in how bad they are. Now if I buy one without the warnings, I will worry those in particular are extra-shady and likely to kill me even faster.

Well, if you own an online casino, I guess your moral compass is already so skewed that you simple don't care. On the other hand, if you own an online mom & pop store that sells clothes for puppies, you rationalize that the impact of those manipulations is not that big of a deal. You're not ruining anyone's live by the single act of persuading them to purchase $100 worth of apparel for mr. pancake.

Re:How we used to get jobs: A newspaper classifieds story on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @01:10AM (#49268039)
Of course, there will also be a service targeted for the companies that receives the mailed in resumes, scans and OCR them and maybe even send the results to an LLM to make further filters and classifications.

And here's the neat thing: If both services are provided by the same company, they can even save the costs of actually sending the physical paper to themselves!

Re:Lines of code. 1,596 BTC gone on Friday August 07, 2026 @08:05PM (#49217640)
Not sure if "understood the rules of the game" is doing a good job here. Using a hardware wallet is almost as close as you can get of a cryptocurrency user understanding all the rules of the game. They are following the "gold standard" of security for personal usage. What else should we expect them to do?
I don't usually use browsers sidebars, but when I do I mentally compensate for it. The viewport is in fact the part of the web page I expect to be the full width, and what things should be centered on.

The same way the vertical centering counts the viewport height only, not the url bar and the tab bar.

"If a company doesn't want you as a consumer you might consider go to a competitor" doesn't sound like giving them power, quite the opposite.
Re:Never Give Them Your Face on Monday June 22, 2026 @04:39PM (#48635851)
Also, let's be honest, outside of some loud privacy concerned voices, most people don't care and they will prefer to scan their faces with the phone they have at home which is an action they are already used to do than to spend money to buy some nerdy device.
Re:Unauthorized alert sent to cell phones across Brazil on Sunday June 21, 2026 @04:02PM (#48622105)
The funniest thing is that apparently "misantropia" is just the hacker's nickname. People were making wholes theories about the meaning of the message, but most likely it was just a signature.
Re:Unauthorized alert sent to cell phones across Brazil on Sunday June 21, 2026 @03:44PM (#48621962)
Yes, I meant that not everyone actually turn their phones off, most just switch it to dot not disturb mode, which is overridden by those emergencies alerts.

And as for enforcement, yeah there isn't an effort in trying to avoid anyone sneaking in an extra phone, it's basically grounded on good faith and the fact that if they catch your phone with you (or even if it rings in the bag), you're eliminated from the exam. That's where I think the chaos would arise. If everyone's phones alerted at the same time, the examiner wouldn't know what to do.

I think cgit is the simplest one that provides a browsable http version of the repository if that's what you want. It's used by the Linux Kernel itself. Example: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/lin...
Re:Unauthorized alert sent to cell phones across Brazil on Saturday June 20, 2026 @09:25PM (#48614784)
Not a message, but a date. There's this huge national exam called ENEM that is like SAT that every Brazilian in age to enter a college takes. Millions of students are taking it every year at the same date and time, as its result is what determines who enters in the best universities. Obviously, security against cheating is a huge concern and so everyone must have their phones turned off and sealed in a bag that stays in front of the class until they finish the exam. Now I can only imagine the chaos that would be if an alert was sent in that day.
Re:Unauthorized alert sent to cell phones across Brazil on Saturday June 20, 2026 @09:18PM (#48614752)
Wouldn't. There isn't a single Brazilian who doesn't know Brazil's current world cup status. The entire country stops when there's a game. Nobody would fall for that.

Not a native English speaker, so I may be far off on this discussion, but for me this kind of activity where you write a blog post and ask for donations is closer to busking than to begging.
I use an specific email address for github and git commits and I can assure you people were scraping github for a while, even before AI.
It's funny how back in the days we used to think the worse a big corporation could do is charge you money. Those were simpler times.
This makes sense if someone bought a ticket and didn't showed up, but what if none was sold? They could just stop selling after a certain time and be sure nobody will be there late.
> I am constantly amazed at how much they "fall" for the LLM, often believing it's sentient.

Cynical part of me had this theory that, at least for part of them, it's the other way around. It's not that they see AI as sentient, it's that they never have seen other human beings like that in the first place. Other people are just means for them to reach their goals, or obstacles. In that sense, AI is not really different for them. Except they're cheaper and be guaranteed to always agree with them.

That's why I believe CEOs, who are more likely to be sociopaths by natural selection, genuinely believe AI is a good replacement for people. They're not looking for individuals with personal thoughts that may contradict with theirs at some point, they're looking for yes-men as a service.

It's a version of the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect.
