Re:Alibaba releases Qwen 3.8 Omni Flash on Friday September 18, 2026 @02:42AM (#49750865)
The "Attention is all you need" paper authors where four (!) Europeans and one from US, amongst others. The "Top 10" lists are just complete rubbish, not worth the paper they are written on.

Europeans do not have the hustle mentality to break the law like Uber so you wont see them compete in anything data heavy. They also are quite risk adverse, probably from having a lower Gini coefficient.

Re:Scott Alexander: The Dilbert Afterlife on Sunday January 18, 2026 @02:34AM (#46665607)
Ive seen it in action. When you get lazy, you start to notice that the single most important aspect is posturing.

So to be lazy you start posturing, selling people how great you and your project is. The more projects you have under you, the higher the chance of something very successful too.

It works, suddenly they can work even less and get promoted.

Ofc this is horrible for the company, having the worst people doing the most “internal sales for positioning”. This also creates a giant middle management layer.

I wouldn’t say they are dumb, they just noticed that great work has no correlation with performance. What does have a correlation is how you act and speak. The All-In Chamaths of the world (not saying he is dumb, he isnt, but damn if boosting isn’t everything for him).

This is why Manifesting, was so popular for the management layer, suddenly it wasnt “being untruthful” it was “manifesting into existence”.

Seven of the eight authors of the influential 2017 AI paper "Attention Is All You Need" are immigrants to the United States. The remaining author is the grandson of refugees.

And the majority of them didn’t get their degrees from US universities.

No doubt Google was the catalyst though.

There are studies on that that showed: Steroids WITHOUT training produced more muscle mass and strength than training without steroids. Bhasin et al., 1996 – New England Journal of Medicine

Belgian Blues dont really need to go to the gym, so it’s not really that hard to phantom.

Worse food and less fat shaming.
I think most europeans wouldnt mind agreeing to that most Asian countries are eating healthier, and their bmis will reflect that.
I know I will be downvoted into oblivion for this but here goes: Im sorry to be crass but if someone makes lifestyle changes after taking drugs its 100% the drugs.

Kind of tired of people taking anabolic steroids and then claiming it's a smaller part of their success or people being born rich talking about hard work whilst being on the golf course.

Just be happy that we live in a time where drugs have been painstakingly researched and move on without the ego boost. Be humble.

Really hope I can return to Gentoo soon. It was just the most stable and most hacker friendly distro Ive ever used. Hats off to all the contributors!
Re:You probably don't need Oh My Zsh on Saturday January 10, 2026 @03:31AM (#46563907)
Space before the command will have the same effect
The Elon way is to fire the middle manager layer, the communication layer, that are great at writing accomplishments because they can be in ten projects at the same time.
So you don’t believe in the free market?

I would say basically everything that has won a an Apple Design Award before 2020.

Things for macOS for example.

Re:Attention Is Bayesian Inference on Sunday January 04, 2026 @10:23AM (#46488814)
Found it interesting and engaging, but having a CS professor at Colombia putting their name to AI “slop” is a bit unnerving. If they are writing papers for work you would hope they would enjoy the process of thinking and writing (journaling) instead of using ChatGPT.
Re:Maybe comments should explain 'what' (2017) on Sunday January 04, 2026 @08:32AM (#46487782)
It’s because maths are the ultimate abstraction. It’s timeless and corner cases (almost) fully understood. Ok maybe not, but at least relative to whatever JavaScript developers are reinventing for the thousand time.
Re:Venezuela's capital hit by explosions, smoke seen on Sunday January 04, 2026 @01:47AM (#46485600)
I own stocks in an american oil company.

The media can blast propaganda all they want about the reasons. It’s just history repeating itself. Never trust american politicans.

If this started a war with China (it wont, but as a thought experiment), wouldn’t american politicans at least want to pretend this was the will of the people? Or are they just so sure they can set the discourse that democracy no longer has a meaning?

Just tried it. Kind of awful for swedish, try “dem slår de”.
Can you explain it in another way? What you are saying is that instead of loosing 100% they loose 70% and loosing 70% is somehow good? Or are you saying the risk adjusted returns are then 30% better on the downside than previously thought? Because if you are, I think people here are saying the risk is so high that it is a given they will fail.
Re:Calibre adds AI "discussion" feature on Friday December 26, 2025 @11:39AM (#46393651)
For my part it is the uneasy feeling of maybe being tracked and “sharing” private text/media either by accident or by the software’s malice.

Most devs want to put AI on their CV so they have strong personal incentives to circumvent what is best for their users.

Would you like to have LLM connections to Google from your OSS torrent client?

We can see the painting on the wall, but still not like it.

Do you think it would work on smart tvs with browsers?

If Im having people over I would never start a PC and ask them to hunker down, turning on the tv though…

Re:Why 'The Global Market' Is an Irresponsible Phrase on Thursday December 25, 2025 @06:54AM (#46383851)
Kind of resonate with my experience, I built an app that only seemed to sell in San Francisco and some European capitals.

Before release, I thought it would simply be correlated with population density, but I was very very wrong.

It was an educational app, not related to IT…

@thenthenthen Spotify doesn’t, its founder who has now moved on is investing.

Wow, this is amazing! Great work!
Re:Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2026? on Friday December 19, 2025 @04:07AM (#46323779)
Yes? It’s all true. It can be good in one axis and bad in another axis.
Its not just cookies. If you tell an LG TV that you live in Europe it will ask you if you want to turn of these “intelligent features“(ACR)
You could try getting an European TV, at least then it will ask and you can say no.
This burden is on politicians. If you can extract enough value from tourism you both lessen the tourism and get people more happy about tourists.

The monetary value has to match the damage it does to have people caring less about the “environment” they are in (gossip puts pressure on people to behave, just like renting puts less pressure on people to take care of their apartment).

Re:If AI replaces workers, should it also pay taxes? on Monday December 15, 2025 @11:46AM (#46276877)
You could argue that the point of creating an oligopoly and then squeezing customers after the fact also is adding friction. All value creation is not great for the people. But it is hidden under the name. Financial engineering and rent-seeking are getting quite advanced nowadays, because of the political class.

I like the idea of classifying it into four buckets: those that are below tax net gains for a country, those who are above and those that are above the tax net gains using just their wealth, and then the government.

Re:Hashcards: A Plain-Text Spaced Repetition System on Monday December 15, 2025 @06:21AM (#46273022)
I did something similar in markdown as the author, but my solution was to generate an unique anchor with a unicode symbol after each answer.

Kind of wish I had an SSH frontend though.

Re:You are dating an ecosystem on Friday December 12, 2025 @07:03AM (#46243342)
I do not agree with the articles framing but TV, books and friends can be shared, a social media feed isn’t.

In fact, I would guess the strongest relationships are those where those are shared.
