Sometimes. Depends. Did it already have a name that everyone was already using and then you went out of your way to call it “China virus”, when your personal brand also just happens to be based on racist dog whistles and stoking xenophobia? Is so, it’s probably racist!
I wouldn’t blame trump’s blatant racism on some people in the media
Pretty sure you need an Apple device for the two-factor to work.
Lots of pooping happens at night too, though...
Re:Share Now, formerly Car2Go, is leaving North America on Thursday December 19, 2019 @10:23PM (#21841500)
I wonder if their pricing change earlier this year had anything to do with it. They made the pricing model very antagonistic (eg the 1 hour package doesn't roll over, so driving for 2 hours on it costs way more than driving one hour, ending the rental, than immediately starting another 1 hour package!)

Before that I used the service a lot, I’d just hop in a car and go do stuff, changing my plans on the go, and know I’d get the best deal. After I had to plan things very precisely and hope for no randomness (heavy traffic, no parking, friend taking too long to come outside) and often it was less hassle and as expensive to take an Uber. I used to use them maybe once a week, then after all that I dropped to once every few months. But that’s just me..

They mean for a privately held company

Lol I‘m familiar with chess notation but was so confused by this that I was googling to see what chess move uses a “Z” :(
Re:Tell HN: Thank you for not redesigning Hacker News on Sunday September 01, 2019 @11:39PM (#20856618)
I rarely wish to click on the username or time links (“3 hours ago”), but that’s what I click on the most due to size and placement issues (when trying to vote or collapse a thread). I agree one should not blindly vote, but at the same time if you have decided to vote, it shouldn’t be maddeningly difficult and error prone to execute.
This happens to me all the time. A few weeks ago I registered for a half marathon and I’m still seeing targeted ads for it. As if I would somehow be able to run it twice lol..
Illegal voting is extremely rare. A bigger problem is election fraud.
Re:15 states are trying to make the electoral college obselete on Wednesday August 21, 2019 @10:40PM (#20764152)
Maybe you could explain how your position improves upon this...
Re:15 states are trying to make the electoral college obselete on Wednesday August 21, 2019 @09:59PM (#20763942)
I’m not following your example. You clarified in another comment that Louisiana is environmentally decimated due to the actions or votes of the blue states. However Louisiana typically goes hard red, and the GOP is very much opposed to environmental protections.

Also I’m not sure what you mean by them pushing all the bad stuff to Louisiana and what that has to do with presidential elections (aside from that the president sets EPA policy, but again, Louisiana voted for trump so I don’t get it)

Re:15 states are trying to make the electoral college obselete on Wednesday August 21, 2019 @06:46PM (#20762747)
This would give even more power to special interests, as they only need to influence a governor (or a small number of state reps) to get their senate choice, rather than all the voters in the state. I can’t see why that’s better, since at least now senators have to pretend to represent constituents.
Re:The League of Entropy Is Making Randomness Truly Random on Saturday August 17, 2019 @11:53PM (#20728136)
We must have gotten different versions. I’m on mobile and my paywall didn't have an X to close it. I have seen the thing you’re talking about on desktop though..

Not really on topic but can we discourage the use of medium? It’s annoying to have to open these links in incognito and on top of that they do some other things that make reading more difficult.
I think they’ll need a lot more than a day

I am one of those developers.

Afterwards I just try to avoid yaml if I can. While it looks cleaner than json, I don’t find it especially easy to read and there is unnecessary ambiguity due to unquoted strings. And it seems to have a thing against Norway ;)

I’m sure mold grows in there because of the constant dampness. You can’t avoid touching the sides because the airflow is so strong and kind of forces it.
It’s a good start at least. You still have to worry about the password being in the middle of a base64 encoded string and weird cases like that but at least you could grep for some known things.

The fries are great though. Sometimes I go there for the fries, and occasionally I get a burger on the side

Re:John McCain has died on Saturday August 25, 2018 @11:30PM (#17844076)
He was given the option to “skip the line” since his dad was an admiral. I think the way it worked is the POW who had been there longest would be first to leave when there was an exchange opportunity. McCain saw it as unfair for him to take someone else’s spot just because of who his dad was.

His campaign manager picked palin, and later admitted it was a mistake. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.slate.com/news-and-politics...

Having a gun toting female vp on the republican ticket would have been a strategic move had she not been such a dumpster fire, so I see where he was going with it. Unfortunately for America it propelled her into the national spotlight and we were subjected to her idiotic rambling for years.

Then ask your state to enact tougher restrictions
I’m no expert on this stuff but that Supreme Court judgement seems totally reasonable to me. Student-led optional prayer at an official school event doesn’t seem different from teacher-led prayer. I still have to sit around while a bunch of people around me participate in a sanctioned event to talk to some deity.

Note that you’re still not prevented from praying, you’re just not allowed to make it part of the agenda and shove it in everyone’s faces at an official event.

I really don’t see the problem, but as I mentioned before, authoritians likely view this as an infringement, while non-authoritarians see this as equalizing.

One way to think about it is would you want school prayer if you were in a minority religion?

I think you have it backwards. Abolishing prayer in school is not authoritarianism and doesn’t reduce personal freedom. You’re still free to pray on your own at school. Having an official religion is authoritarian (unless it’s a religious school), and pressuring people to participate in a prayer is pressuring them to have less personal freedom (from your religion).

I guess authoritarians tend to view a policy which gives equal preference to everyone as an attack on their “special status” and a reduction of their freedoms.

Re:Performance Reviews Are a Waste of Time on Wednesday June 06, 2018 @10:00PM (#17252672)
That really sucks. But also what's the point of even having reviews it if it's going to be years in between them? There doesn't seem to be any upside, but lots of downside
Re:Performance Reviews Are a Waste of Time on Wednesday June 06, 2018 @09:46PM (#17252607)
The cost-benefit still doesn't make sense to me. He's talking about doing a very expensive & generally counter-productive activity in the off chance that you might uncover some insight about your employee. I usually tell people the first half of High Output Management is good, but to skip the second half...

Yeah I couldn’t finish it. Was there anything of substance other than he got bad info from a rep on Twitter?
