What a cynical view - and coming from me, that's pretty bad.

Things can improve, and in fact, they have improved quite a bit over the last several centuries.

The appeal to authority of the ancient Greeks is sometimes a good one I guess, but not always. For instance, the Greeks "knew" a lot of things that they were flat wrong about.

So why do people trust the dissenting scientists? What leads them to that option over simply going with the majority? I've never understood that, but the cynic in me thinks they're simply looking for someone that they already agree with.

Thanks for the insight. I understand the raw curiosity, but I also know that the man will almost certainly never stand up to the myth.

That part I do understand, but this is already the case isn't it? Whether Satoshi comes forward or remains hidden. I wondered if it were more of a worry in the community that Satoshi would, perhaps, attempt to exert some form of central control, which I'm relatively certain is considered a bad thing in that community.

Why should we try this? I don't understand.

Isn't this basically just like working second shift?

As someone mostly in the dark about bitcoin and the community around it, why does this matter at all? Why do people care who created it at this stage, and if that person should come forth, what would the impact be? What could such a person realistically do?
Can you be more specific or helpful? I don't know anything about the topic, where can I find what you would call quality content?
Re:Introducing Kindle Oasis on Wednesday April 13, 2016 @05:50PM (#11492558)
I'm not the guy you were originally asking, but I've had issues with page turns on my Voyager. I think it's a pagination ordering issue - if I've been reading on my phone, and then open my Kindle and sync to the location in the book where I left off at on my phone, the first manual page turn I make sometimes fails to match up perfectly.

As a for instance, if "the quick brown fox" is the last words on my current page, and I turn to the next page, I'd expect the first words to be "jumps over the lazy dog" but in this instance "jumps over the lazy dog" is typically somewhere mid page.

I've also had issues, again when syncing my position from a different device, where the location totally bugs out if I try to swipe back to the previous page. This happens infrequently, so I'm uncertain if there's any logic at play, but the location is often way off of where it should be when aiming for the previous page.

They hatch from the egg in the chicken or egg equation.
Is she qualified? Maybe.

My question is, what are the qualifications of the person that actually got the job?

I don't see the difference between this and procrastination - there doesn't seem to be a great deal of new insight here.
Re:Ask HN: Why don't more web projects start with a JVM stack? on Thursday February 04, 2016 @09:55AM (#11034254)
You're not wrong, but deployment is rarely simple. And there are gotchas in every environment I've ever worked with.

It's just a different set of skills to pick up, no different from any others.

There's something to what you're saying.

Our industry is a big lover of the next big thing. We collectively waste so much time and productivity by constantly changing the rules of the game.

It's certainly a rigged system, but (anecdote incoming) I know many people in situations such as you describe, and the most that the majority (not all) do about it is complain. I rarely see a true effort put forth to rectify or improve.

It's typically all about how the forces are aligned against them, so why even try. And yeah, I know, learned helplessness is a thing. I get it, trust me, I do, but still...

Re:Why I'm a Pirate on Wednesday January 18, 2012 @10:42AM (#3480211)
That sort of argument just comes off as a word game to me, I don't really know what to say to it. It is similar to saying no one dies when they jump out of a window, it is the impact that kills them.
Re:Why I'm a Pirate on Wednesday January 18, 2012 @10:05AM (#3479995)
This a very shortsighted view - of course creators lose money due to pirating.

I'm not even speaking about the concept of sells they may have had in place of theft - that is simple conjecture. There is no doubt that less money flowing in to the industry, as a direct result of piracy, means less money for creators. Is anyone honestly suggesting media sales haven't declined due to pirating?

I'm not a proponent of the industry as it currently functions, but I dislike the offhand spread of disinformation - less money spent on purchases will indirectly, and sometimes directly, result in less money for creators.
