I think perhaps step #7 is down/offline now
It seems that software on your cell phone is collecting and sending this data, not the battery monitor device. Am I misunderstanding the title?
Re:Swing VPN app is a DDoS botnet on Sunday June 18, 2023 @07:26PM (#36385594)
My mistake, I looked at the article for 10 seconds before assuming that this app is no different than hundreds of other ones, apparently it is a rare outlier. At any rate, there are more effective ways to disrupt service if that was the goal.
Re:Swing VPN app is a DDoS botnet on Sunday June 18, 2023 @06:57PM (#36385404)
Hilarious conclusion from the author. It's almost certainly not the case that the owners of this service are using it to 'DDoS' targets, rather it's much more likely they are using your device to host a proxy server and then selling access to some 'residential proxy reseller'.

On the other side of that, some random Joe has probably purchased access to a set of these 'residential proxies' and is using them to scrape flight data from the airline site the article author noticed, with some of those requests being sent over the author's connection.

Many 'free vpn' and 'free proxy' apps engage in this behavior, you may proxy your requests via their connection, but they also proxy their requests via yours, generally reselling that access to someone who finds your IP address to be of value to them due to the fact that it's not a datacenter address.

It's certainly questionable to straight up unethical either way, especially so if the service doesn't disclose to you that they're doing that, but on the other hand I find the author's DDoS conclusion to be so contrived and out of touch with reality that I had to write this comment.

Seems like a hilarious conclusion to me.

For those of us who can't be bothered to watch through the whole announcement to find where they say it, what's the refresh rate of this thing?

It appears the repo in question has been available for 3 years.

Re:Framework Laptop 16 Deep Dive: Display on Saturday June 03, 2023 @01:05PM (#36178376)
Personally I disagree about the resolution being a sweet spot, in my opinion it's almost the worst resolution imaginable for this size. The pixels are just slightly too small to the point where it becomes annoying and uncomfortable (for most people) to use it at 100% scaling, 200% scaling is out of the question as everything would be massive and you'd only get some 720p equivalent worth of real estate, and fractional scaling is generally subpar and not worth using in many cases. I think both 4k and 1080p are better options for a 15-16" screen.

For what it's worth, the three most similar models from BOE all use DC dimming:

In fact it seems that most every single one of these newer high refresh rate 1440p/1600p laptop panels does, I couldn't find a single pwm one.

Re:macOS Like Fonts on Manjaro/Arch Linux on Wednesday May 31, 2023 @07:54PM (#36146073)
They most certainly have never had fractional scaling, you get either 1x or 2x.
Why is there any concept of "some users worldwide" with respect to default cookie settings in a browser application?
For a bit of comparison, if you've tested, how fast are 13B or 7B on the same setup?
That's fairly trivial to do, someone doing it for you is certainly not worth anywhere near £130.00 in my humble opinion.

Surprised to see this guy wasn't already in prison due to his previous antics, and it's too bad he didn't responsibly report this issue through the proper channels. Everyone's luck is bound to run out at some point.
Re:Ask HN: Techwise, how did TikTok get so good? on Wednesday January 18, 2023 @05:26AM (#34425198)
I think most people here are vastly, vastly overestimating the size of the videos with all this talk about buffering in the comments.

The average video on tiktok, at least for the webapp version, appears to be around 1 megabit (0.125 megabytes) per second when the h264 option is used, and only half of that rate when using ByteDance's 'own' (essentially hevc) format.

I would reckon nearly all internet users, even many mobile ones, have more than enough bandwidth (and low enough latency and loss) to stream many of these tiktok videos in real time simultaneously, let alone a single one at a time.

Tiktok's backend infrastructure may be impressive, but the same could be said for the other companies you listed such as Google.

Re:The ThinkPad TrackPoint tried to build a better mouse (2020) on Wednesday January 18, 2023 @03:25AM (#34424580)
Apple's most basic multitouch trackpad (the one from 10+ years ago, prior to the haptic stuff, prior to the force touch stuff, prior to the massive dimensions) runs absolute circles around every other laptop pointing device to date, to the point where it's not even funny. Its only weak point is the 125hz sample rate.

The big downside of the trackpoint is that it's more of a joystick replacement than a mouse replacement; more waiting around is required to get the cursor positioned where you want it, even with acceleration.

Re:Mighty is shutting down after 3.5 years on Sunday November 13, 2022 @03:14PM (#33586855)
It was very surprising to see how many people were buying into this (frankly awful) idea when it was posted here a year or two ago. Any one person criticizing it was immediately dogpiled on by 10 people telling them how wrong they were. Refreshing to see everything come full circle in the end.
From a purely anecdotal perspective, I've noticed a vast decrease in the performance of the macOS updaters/installers since the point when they switched to using what is essentially the iOS mechanism for them, with the MobileAsset UpdateBrain stuff, and .ipsw files, and chunked pbzx archives nested inside zip archives nested inside xar archives. I don't remember the details of the previous system, but I remember it seeming a lot simpler, a lot less buggy, and certainly a lot faster on my hardware.
Not sure why people flagged you for this. It's very common for open source projects to make the details of security-related bugs private. One example is Firefox, nearly every security update references one or more bug tickets that the public doesn't have permission to view.

I wonder if Apple listed the wrong webkit bug number, it almost looks like it.

Re:Best Font for Online Reading: No Single Answer on Monday April 25, 2022 @02:46PM (#31159021)
Personally speaking, I think it's kind of silly that this article neither mentioned screen resolution nor the font rendering differences inherent to various operating systems.

Not seeing it brah
Honestly, anyone who didn't see this coming when they purchased an 'internet-connected hard drive' deserves it.
