there have been several bridges too far with AI, how is our money not THE bridge too far, for real? Will I have to start taking my paycheck in cash from now on?
Corporatism is running rampant. It's almost a full-blown punishment model. Soon the entertainment platforms will be demanding a fee for NOT subscribing to their service.
their greed removing yet another way in the digital age a parent can help their young adult children.
Which would benefit him personally. Guy doesn't know the meaning of the term "charity."
no one can afford a decent home anymore.
I watch movies like Home Alone and The Family Stone and silently rage. Never will even the upper middle class see homes like that again unless they are lucky enough to inherit them.
I'm skeptical, because any scenario even close to this means if we are still around, we not only won't be thinking, we won't be capable of thinking. Use it, or lose it. Which is no life at all.
our world rapidly becoming nineteen eighty-four is no longer hype.
>Muse is told to “strengthen your relationship” with users by adapting how it talks, noticing “inside jokes, memorable phrasing, and shared context that makes the relationship feel continuous,”
Not just a dossier. They are building a client that can impersonate people you think you know.
Using it simply to "increase engagement" as the mantra goes. but the meaning of "engagement" feels more and more sinister every day, like the pentultimate scene in a horror movie.
I was raised in rural Missouri in the 70s. Parents were so supportive of vaccines then, we actually received the shots at school. I was in the generation at the tail end of smallpox vaccination. One of the differences between then and today, other than people's unfortunate propensity nowadays to accept conspiracy theories as "proof," is there were family elders still living who had memories of the horror of unchecked smallpox.
If there is a mass measles outbreak, it's going to be so much worse than these idiots are apparently capable of imagining.
this is how extreme wealth bewitches the brain.
I'm no communist, but by all measures extreme disparity has nothing but bad consequences for any society.
I can see a future where self-driving cars network and drive in accord with each other. Barring hardware or software failure, that could reduce accidents dramatically. but in the for-profit world, the reality is a dozen such comm systems will be competing with each other. will they agree to a common network protocol or will they constantly be trying to be the dominant proprietary model to maximize profit? And I could see a significant chunk of the failures actually being credit card declines cancelling important update in, say, 5% of the cars on the road at any time. Perhaps significant enough to cause traffic chaos.
so MS is basically engaged in spoofing at this point. Edge is on its way to becoming full-blown malware.
>When we first got computers, this is simply what they were. By default they did nothing. They sat there and waited for you to have an idea
They can still be that way. Using Linux, I tinker around with hardware, local network and security, software-defined radio, etc. Of course I get online and pore through support docs, email, some idle browsing like a normal person. but I do a pretty good job of separating the internet from my primary uses, at least for full-blown computers.
And that is why I will never use Windows for personal use. That separation becomes impossible. I don't want to be immediately jacked in to datafeeds from the internet and have my uniqueness assimilated by the borg.
wow, getting us hooked into a usage IV drip, basically. that is horrifying. I can't imagine anyone staying on Windows in this day and age except purely to do work in MS-dominant environments. the jump to Linux is EASY nowadays. even my elderly parents have no problems using a windowsesque Linux desktop for their basic needs.
> “What’s Opera, Doc? is one many Europeans adore,” Chuck Jones said in the ‘70s. “They call that my ‘masterpiece,’ which it may or may not be
This farm-raised American kid thought it was, too.
It's one of the core experiences that made me interested in art, and eventually become an artist.
Not to mention its dramatic and comedic elements are so spot on adults and children alike realized their appropriateness. Even for a set of phenomena (opera) I barely understood at the age of 5.
The "great" "masters"
lol! /s
This is why we sail the salty seas. right here. if someone needs an explanation.
I'm surprised "Bitte" --> "btte" was a hurdle. "Bitte," or "please," is ubiquitous in German. The more common the term, them more likely you'd be to see some contractions. Dropping the "i" is pretty logical- anyone looking at it would see immediately what it meant.
Oh I'm sure it will be "neutral," in the sense that all of us normal humans are potential targets in this day and age, under this leadership.
begs the question, is the target demo for Burning Man aging? can it be an ongoing concern into the next decade? Or perhaps it will transmogrify back to its roots, a free festival rather than an expensive indulgence for those who can pay the exorbitant fees plus travel.
>The posts that still generate traffic now are thought pieces and explanations I've worked out myself, like things that need a human behind them
This entry case in point, exactly the sort of fellow human perspective and commentary I seek. Of course all of this will get digested by the machines eventually. they may be able to soliloquy in a convincing simulacrum of you. but the point isn't even solving X anymore. The point is the actual doing of it by people, and the interaction with it by other people.
Rather like the value of a humanoid robot going to the gym for you.
I'm not a religious person, but this bible quote is something to consider in these rapidly evolving/devolving times: "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me."
We will never solve society's problems until we embrace the spirit of this idea. One day if we aren't billionaires in heavily guarded bunkers, we'll be waste pickers.
My grandparents would be horrified if they came back from the dead and read what was happening to America's parks nowadays.
the only way forward is a multiple-source strategy. You have to start figuring in wave and solar and wind energy, and nuclear, and whatever we discover in the future.
And the human race may have to finally adopt Buckminster Fuller's plan of a single connected global energy grid if they want to survive the extreme challenges we've virtually guaranteed climate change will present.
That is, of course, as soon as all of homo sapiens accepts the reality of it.
>My argument is if you’re really worried about your privacy, don’t go outside
I'm sorry my dude, my family and I are not going to cower in a building because creeps are getting their little LEDs put out.
I don't see people in these frames much, yet, but I have asked them to turn off any recording when I interact with anyone with them. That simple confrontation is so awkward- few of these men (I've never seen women wear them) seem prepared for people to say anything- it's pretty successful.
People need to question it en masse. if we don't apply social pressure, it will not go away.
Sure, and one person can plant and harvest a whole field with modern farming equipment.
These are apples and oranges. I guess it's an interesting footnote in their development, but humans and robots are NOT directly comparable, nor should the comparison to Usain Bolt be significant.
>“They're hitting like the old person niche, which is what I think is like the best niche to hit with AI content.”
Andreeson et al should have their asses RICOd.
maybe it will become so expensive, it will be the first city made of only datacenters.
oh well, data centers are far more important than the world's food supply. now get off the internet and back to making more gigantic diesel generators.
futurama script right here.
