I'm not sure we have been living the dream with shitty desktop web apps running in a full browser each taking several gigs of ram for playing some music or chatting with coworkers and friends. Electron and its likes are the scourge of software world.

I'm happy if LLMs and the semiconductor shortage will create a renaissance of native applications.

Why? The computer is booted to windows, then you choose windows.
It does, if you use WSL you're OS is Windows.
They need to drive traffic to the dying bluesky thing somehow.
Re:Japan's IC cards are weird and wonderful on Saturday May 17, 2025 @08:52AM (#44013942)
Also my western Google pixel pro 9XL does not support it..while the Japanese version does. I guess google might be saving on the licensing or something.
Re:Internet in a Box on Monday April 28, 2025 @04:19AM (#43818881)
I was thinking the same. It must take much less space in database form than all the html pages.
Re:Semaphore CI is now open-source on Wednesday February 26, 2025 @08:38PM (#43190357)
It is not Open Source, it is partially Open Source with an Enterprise Edition that has a proprietary license.
Is it genocide if you breed more of them than you put down?

If you happen to have a pop in Sweden then there is an IX with free ports up to 100GE. https://sonix.network
Re:Turning a Keyboard into a Mouse with Libevdev on Thursday September 07, 2023 @01:19PM (#37422316)
If you're on xorg you could just configure pointerkeys https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Using_the_numeric_keyboard...
Re:Ubicloud – open, free and portable cloud on Wednesday August 16, 2023 @06:14PM (#37154599)
I hate the trend of these freemium faux FOSS poser projects that keep popping up.
Great! Lucky I haven't clicked the link yet so not giving traffic to them.
Re:US Department of Energy: Fusion Ignition Achieved on Tuesday December 13, 2022 @12:13PM (#33971931)
You mean like tearing a hole in the fabric of space and time and opening a hell portal to another dimension?
Re:Bipartisan Legislation to Ban TikTok on Tuesday December 13, 2022 @12:09PM (#33971846)
They do that but most of the time for the opposite reason. Because their populations might get to know something forbidden and truthful.
Re:Pyinfra automates infrastructure super fast at scale on Friday October 21, 2022 @12:31PM (#33289900)
I guess one would be that it is python and not Ansible.
In Sweden we are super reliant on digital payments and a lot of stores don't even accept cash any more. Most people don't carry cash only digital payments. This simplifies for the stores/restaurants and maybe decreases the risk of handling larger amounts of cash. I love the simplicity of digital payments and not having to bother with change and such. We even have an app called Swish (set up by Swedish banks) that does free money transfer between people and can also do payments to stores.

Every once in a while some pensioner organisation or so starts a debate about them not understanding how to pay their bills via an app and that they can't shop at some stores/restaurants only taking payments via an app (Swish). Some seniors might not have a smartphone or are unable to use it.

But the real and much bigger issue is what happens in case of a crisis. Like a huge power outage or the rolling blackouts that might come this winter depending on how the power situation develops in Europe. Or in case of natural disaster or war. We have historically had a very stable power grid and society so most people don't even think about what they would do if their digital payment methods just stopped working. I don't think it benefits our society that we are unable to make payments without technology.

Re:10BASE-T using Raspberry Pi Pico with 2 GPIO pins on Monday August 22, 2022 @05:20AM (#32549149)
The fact that it links up at 10BASE-T does not mean that it can send at wire rate.

Re:Should GitHub be sued for training Copilot on GPL code? on Thursday June 23, 2022 @09:38AM (#31848958)
This kind of reminds me of when someone reverse engineers a piece of software to document interfaces, protocols or APIs for the purpose of writing compatible software. Then a second person not involved in the RE process implement compatible software from the documentation the first person wrote.

This is to avoid any contamination and verbatim copies of code. Once you have read a piece of code there is a risk of "contamination" and you will be influenced by it. It does not matter if you directly copy it, write it out from memory or use an AI to regurgitate it. It will be a copy of the code. To me this is very clear.

With the Linux virtual machines that are integrated into windows, known as WSL2 I can see how Extend will be the next step. The proprietary binary blobs for graphics and compute acceleration are already there.

Hopefully the GPL and AGPL can protect us somewhat against the Extend.

Re:Korg NTS-2 DIY oscilloscope and wave generator kit on Thursday May 19, 2022 @05:04AM (#31432309)
Wow, you can't really please everybody.. People are complaining about it being too expensive and now too cheap. What shall it be?
Re:Korg NTS-2 DIY oscilloscope and wave generator kit on Thursday May 19, 2022 @03:41AM (#31431830)
Might need an adapter to 3.5mm and does not have a signal generator but this does not have to be that expensive.

Re:Leaving The Qt Company on Wednesday May 18, 2022 @11:19AM (#31423881)
I think they have a very reasonable licensing model being GPL and Free Software.
Re:Wipeout (PSX and Windows Source) on Sunday March 27, 2022 @12:43PM (#30821666)

Re:Drug made of car exhaust filters alarms Congo's capital on Saturday October 16, 2021 @12:01PM (#28888785)
I wonder if it isn't just lost in translation that they are stealing the catalytic converters to fund their substance abuse?

They are pretty expensive containing a bunch of rare metals such as palladium, platinum and even rhodium.

Re:Azure switch and NOS reliability study [pdf] on Monday May 24, 2021 @05:44AM (#27262539)
Kind of sucks that the other vendors are not mentioned by name.
