Insurance companies make 3% margin. Unless you think US healthcare is only 3% too expensive, it must also be the providers fault.
One thing that would really help batteries is permitting reform. The BAAJA reform bill would really help not just the batteries themselves but the transmission lines which are far more difficult to construct thank to an insane system and lots of lawsuits.
Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @06:45AM (#50178750)
Another issue is they’ve lost their credibility going all in on geopolitics (Palestine) and being anti development which makes it impossible to create green energy and denser energy efficient cities
I mean every single major nuclear plant accident is from reactors built in the 1960s. I think we are simply better at building them and it is no longer a question of “when”
Re:What shall I teach my son? on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @07:12PM (#50173970)
It’s easy to pass failing students when you don’t test them. That’s the whole reason it looks good
Way more people will die from climate change because we were forced to rely on oil instead of building out nuclear.
And yet even including Chernobyl nuclear is far safer than oil and gas per kw
It just becomes part of the sale price
We could easily build apartments on the coast in CA and then non multi millionaires might be able to live there. We have decided that only multimillionaires deserve to own a coastal house by restricting zoning in the coast so heavily
Re:ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026 on Sunday September 27, 2026 @09:51AM (#49866649)
For example, the Netherlands are currently pouring cement down their oil derricks to try and prevent a future government from re opening them, over absurdly minor earthquakes, despite the energy crisis.
The DOD keeps extreme control over their supply chain. For many things it requires specific approval to be in the supply chain in the first place
The issue is continuous heatwaves, when you either buy ac or start to die. No passive cooling can help you when the nights stay hot
The US could carpet bomb their enemies like they did in WW2, instead they pursue one of the lowest civilian casualty methods of in the history of the world, and nobody even cares because somehow that’s not good enough
The point is the DoD is telling its suppliers not to use it because the supplier of your supplier is your supplier. That’s what this does
Congress cannot do anything the Supreme Court says they cannot do
Re:Factorio that you can touch on Friday September 25, 2026 @03:39PM (#49848980)
In fact, sometimes when your game lags too much you can speed it up by zooming in! (Only in some cases)
Re:California is chasing wealth that has feet on Thursday September 24, 2026 @07:52PM (#49838367)
Property is literally a wealth tax on an asset that can’t move away
I don’t even trust California to remember where they put these solar panels
It’s only US states that don’t arrest people for stealing that have this issue
Re:The NASA/ESA Mars Sample Return mission has been canceled on Monday September 21, 2026 @07:48PM (#49794979)
Only the yield matters. The grades are just too low in some earthbound deposits for them to be dug
Re:Nobody pays for FOSS, we can force them to on Sunday September 20, 2026 @08:36PM (#49781669)
Are you aware of what FOSS stands for?
Several of these companies almost went under before the AI boom. There isn’t a cartel.

Re:There's no point at which turning your brain off will work on Friday September 18, 2026 @04:09PM (#49759555)
Automating trains would let LIRR run trains more often because they aren’t having to pay 2-3x median income for someone who does little on each train

It would be better for society to pay these people to do nothing while we run more trains automatically.

All US passenger rail runs off of massive state subsidies. The absurd pay is the taxpayers money.

Re:There's no point at which turning your brain off will work on Friday September 18, 2026 @04:05PM (#49759509)
Automated trains have been around for nearly 40 years.

I want automate trains because they would make running trains more often possible

Re:North Korean nuclear test sets off years of earthquakes on Friday September 18, 2026 @04:04PM (#49759493)
I think you’ve made reasonable points. I think of it like this: the US was already firebombing Tokyo which was actually much worse than the nukes, they did likely see it as a continuation of the existing firebombing campaign
Re:There's no point at which turning your brain off will work on Friday September 18, 2026 @02:26PM (#49758254)
There used to be no such thing as a woodworker. It used to be a number of different professions, such as the jointer, the cabinet maker, the planer, etc. now with modern tools it’s merged into one job
Re:North Korean nuclear test sets off years of earthquakes on Friday September 18, 2026 @01:38PM (#49757661)
No this is apologizing for a fascist and suicidal regime. One day people will make this claim about Russia in their current Ukraine war even though it’s painfully obvious Russia is not seeking an actual diplomatic solution, and I will view them with the same distain as I view you now
Re:North Korean nuclear test sets off years of earthquakes on Friday September 18, 2026 @01:36PM (#49757633)
Yes there was. They didn’t surrender, and the US intended to make it look like they had an enormous number of bombs even though the next was going to be weeks away
Re:There's no point at which turning your brain off will work on Friday September 18, 2026 @01:34PM (#49757601)
Train conductors should be automated, we have better things to spend government money on than make work jobs. LIRR pays conductors 200k. It’s theft at that point
