The cruelty is the point
Banning phones is the practical policy. Schools could not police the myriad of apps and websites.
Re:Former President Trump is projected to win the presidency on Wednesday November 06, 2024 @06:01AM (#42059951)
There was nothing coherent to understand. A rag tag coalition mainly built on delusional positions.

- we can have all the trade benefits without freedom of movement (specifically denied by EU at the time, didn't materialise)

- we will have 'more trade' afterwards (fails to understand how trade works)

- we won't have to follow EU rules (in reality, we can't really diverge that much from how the EU works without incurring penalties)

- we won't have to pay anything to them / we hold all the cards / ... (we did pay for our liabilities and we definitely didn't hold the cards)

- we can become much more left wing if we leave the neoliberal EU (fails to account for the fact our country isn't particularly left wing overall)

- politicians will have to take responsibility/can't blame the EU (brexiteers keep blaming the EU even now, BJ et.al. have faced minimal or no consequences for their actions)

- we can fish again (ignores relative importance of fishing vs the actually productive economy, disregards that EU is a big market for said fish)

What do you suggest we engage with?

XP x64 was a lovely desktop, and was essentially 2k3 desktop. Last Windows system I enjoyed using.
Re:Former President Trump is projected to win the presidency on Wednesday November 06, 2024 @05:00AM (#42059014)
What happened is that the remain side had to fight on the side of a reality that existed and the Brexiteers made up a fantasy future that has failed to materialise.

For more on how modern engines work (although the core idea of alpha-beta pruning [1] is still used) you can check out the chess programming wiki [2].

I suspect the “l” parameter is for observed latency as the client displays observed latency from the server.

A strange thing is you can specifically donate to Thunderbird, but not to Firefox.

I never quite understood why Mozilla seems more interested in other things vs Firefox (the browser, not the other Firefox branded things).

Re:MRSK vs. Fly.io on Thursday March 23, 2023 @05:12AM (#35272070)
This is a competitive post par excellence, for politeness, accuracy and still doing a great job of demonstrating fly.io's key competitive points vs MRSK.

I'd love it if all 'vs' and competitive marketing was this good.

Re:When did New York start building slowly? on Thursday March 23, 2023 @03:46AM (#35271600)
There’s a difficult asymmetry in that it takes much longer to build in house expertise that it does to privatise it.

Privatisation also often allows a short term financial boost at long term net expense.

Re:Britons face 20k digital pound cap under Bank of England plan on Wednesday February 15, 2023 @08:55AM (#34803792)
One suspects that even some of the people behind this effort are skeptical, when you read between the lines.

As with the rest of crypto, 99% a solution in search of a problem.

Banking in the U.K. isn’t perfect but for the majority of consumers it’s quick, easy and convenient and by and large fee free.

Do your own research is in this case code for it hasn’t happened.

The closest you can find is: - the hostile environment denying immigrants banking services (while an obvious injustice, unrelated to their political views) [1] - seizures etc related to crime (including terrorism)

Most denials of banking services are due to poor credit history and as mentioned in this thread Basic Bank accounts exist as a mandated product to serve this market.

You can see some of the reasons why around a million U.K. adults are unbanked through this research and evidence [2] - suspiciously not appearing on this list is anything with even a hint of denial due to political belief or actions.

So please do enlighten us of all these alleged cases of politically motivated un-banking.

Is there a good theme for KDE that hews closely to the w2k/w2k3 look and feel?

I have fond memories of using wxpx64 which was basically w2k3 desktop edition.

Tridactyl does the job for most websites pretty well as for text heavy sites like documentation it’s very good.

Neither on FF or Safari on Mac.
Re:Life in the Slow Lane: the slow cooker changed the world on Thursday November 24, 2022 @05:19AM (#33729643)
I pressure cook with the Instant Pot, as well as using it as a rice cooker (which I consider to be worth it in itself, we eat a reasonably large amount of rice).

Best sources are the pressure cooker recipes on Serious Eats [1], I especially recommend the Pho Ga [2], the Mushroom Risotto [3] and the Bolognese Ragu [4].

Another good source is hippressurecooking (I use the book[5] rather than the website [6]) - the book is worth it for the of method and time alone for e.g. beans, and the recipes are not as good as the Serious Eats ones, but many are good (I like the Filipino Chicken Adobo). I've used it in combination with other sources, as a way to adapt to the faster pressure cooking times (Urad Dal, using the ingredients from Ottolenghi, but method from Hip Pressure Cooking. Mind you if I have the time, I tend now to make the Dishoom House Black Dal).

Re:Mass of Transactions Leaving Crypto.com Wallets on Monday November 14, 2022 @07:59AM (#33593297)
Gold is different to Bitcoin/Cryptocurrency in a few keys ways, not least of which:

  - it's a physical object
  - it has use value in jewelry
  - it has use value in electronics and other industrial applications
Gold storage in itself doesn't create value, but jewelry, electronics etc do.
Re:From Plex to Jellyfin Media Server on Sunday November 13, 2022 @03:15AM (#33581087)
I started using plex when my synology nas stopped supporting smb1 and Sonos doesn’t support anything newer.

Do any of the competing solutions work with Sonos and have iOS and webOS (LG TV) apps?

Re:From Plex to Jellyfin Media Server on Sunday November 13, 2022 @03:08AM (#33581046)
How do I opt out of everything but my locally stored media?
Stuff I've used:

  - Prophet - seems to be the current 'standard' choice
  - ARIMA - Classical choice
  - Exponential Moving Average - dead simple to implement, works well for stuff that's a time series but not very seasonal
  - Kalman/Statespace model - used by Splunk's predict[1] command (pretty sure I always used LLP5)
I did some anomaly detection work, in business transactions, and found the best way was to create a sort of ensemble model, where we applied all the models, and kept any anomalies, then used simple rules to only alert on 'interesting' anomalies, like:

  - 2-3 anomalies in a row
  - high deviation from expected
  - multiple models all detected anomaly
To improve signal vs noise.

I've been a big fan of the Lonely Planet travel guides, and it's cheap enough to pick one up for the city - worth it even for just a couple of meals or ideas.

Steve Yegge recommends deleting whole words and retyping instead of using backspace, this might help you. On a Mac Option-Delete will do this.
Let's also be clear the ideas were right-wing libertarian market fundamentalism, fomented through the shady 55 Tufton Street establishment, likely funded by American billionaire money.

The market fundamentally rejecting the ideas of the market fundamentalists would be hilarious, if it wasn't happening to us.
