Re:San Francisco Graffiti on Tuesday January 27, 2026 @02:34PM (#46785209)
an invader mosiac is not graffiti, it's street art, which is more or less the mortal enemy of graff. I'm not even trolling when I say people with attitudes like yours are what legit motivate so many graff writers out there.
Re:San Francisco Graffiti on Tuesday January 27, 2026 @02:32PM (#46785180)
the sheer lack of knowledge of the graff scene on HN isn't surprising in any way but wow there are so many idiotic hot takes in this thread hahaha. I've been writing graff for over 20 years - it's something the average civilian mind could never comprehend. Graffiti has existed almost since the beginning of civilization; it's primal, it's raw. Doing graff is one of the most human activities one could partake in. It's also one of the most pure art forms to be conceived. All of that is true and most graff writers are horribly toxic and terrible humans (most but certainly not all).
Re:Eat Real Food on Thursday January 08, 2026 @04:17PM (#46546616)
this is clearly a net loss for public health in general, politics aside. Having alcohol in dietary guidelines (without even stating a drink limit) is positively idiotic.

big issue in appalachia / red states were republican lawmakers have tried to thwart laws restricting the practice
and this is why I don't look down on those who choose to pirate bluray/4k content

Once again, they’re severely discounting socialization over the internet. Twitch, discord, et al account for massive amounts of socialization. For many kids it’s easier to chat or stream than it is to find the other 2-3 weird kids into their particular hobby. Watch the TV documentary “Social Studies” if you think Gen Z isn’t partying. “Euphoria” is definitely an exaggeration but it’s relatable to Gen Z for a reason. Anecdotally, I see Genz all the time at raves and concerts. These aren’t “animal house” style events but still.
Instagram because it's by far the app that gets the most use on an hour by hour basis. Endless content plus messaging.
Re:Ask HN: What companies have a good work life balance? on Friday December 06, 2024 @01:56PM (#42342917)
+1 for Atlassian. One of my close mates is a US FTE for 10 years and he's always trying to recruit me, specifically on the merits of work-life balance. Surely varies from team to team but their Team Anywhere (fully remote, all positions) is very appealing.
Try this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Medusa_and_the_Snail

The Medusa and the Snail: More Notes of a Biology Watcher is a 1979 collection of essays by the American science writer Lewis Thomas. It was published by Viking Press in 1979 and reissued by Penguin Books in 1995. Most of the essays in the book had first appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine. It is Thomas's second collection of short essays after Lives of a Cell.[1]

The title essay is about the relationship between Nudibranch sea slug and the medusa of a jellyfish that inhabit the Bay of Naples. It explores how the relationship between the two creatures can be seen as illustrating the impossibility of understanding the notion of the self.[2]

Main problem with DoSing NK is that it disrupts legitimate military cyber activities.
Re:Andrew Huberman's Mechanisms of Control on Wednesday March 27, 2024 @03:20PM (#39843442)
so many academics and doctors have been criticizing his "science" for years, this total loss of integrity should be the final straw that breaks the camels back
Re:Andrew Huberman's Mechanisms of Control on Tuesday March 26, 2024 @06:35PM (#39833622)
lots of scientists have previously criticized a wide range of his claims but this is next level deception bordering on psychopathy
Re:Boeing whistleblower found dead in US on Thursday March 14, 2024 @02:00PM (#39707063)
zero evidence of foul play but, who needs evidence...
Huberman lost all credibility with the science and medical community years ago, lol
They've still never actually defined what an "ultra-processed food" even is.

Is it ketchup? Is it protein powder? Is it infant formula? Is it plant-based meat? Is it banana bread?

Is it based on the number of ingredients? Is it based on a preparation method?

This is the core problem with just about every article or study on UPFs

proof that HN comments are just as uninformed and insane as the rest of the internet...sigh

If I buy a pound of sugar, doesn't it matter how long it takes me to use that sugar in order to have any relevant insights? If I buy a pound of sugar a week, that's a really different implication than buying a pound of sugar only once per year.

it's the company's policy that should enforce automatic screen locks, not relying on an error prone human

not a breach or an alleged breach - this was simply testing to mass amounts of email addresses to see if they were valid users.

5. Encrypt your hard drives using FileVault (macOS) or Bitlocker (Windows) and never leave your machine without locking it.

Asking Karen in accounting to give 2 flips about filevault is absurd. Create a corp policy that encrypts by default.....this is what I'm talking about

The list makes every item a problem for the employee when in reality it's a problem for the company itself. It's the company that needs to implement and IDP and define SSO/2FA policies. The company is the one that ought to make following the rules the default - create policies to prevent saving passwords to the browser, etc. Employees do play a role but companies need to understand that it's on them to create sane policies by default
