“In principle, I could have used the same engine itself as the teacher, but just to save on wall clock time I used Stockfish. This reduced the wall-clock time from ~4000 1996-core-years (something entirely doable in 1996---but sadly not something I can do with my single lonely desktop) to just a few days on a modern desktop running a modern engine.”
I see no reason to doubt the author here.
And how will you be getting to the island?
Alignment is more than mere agreement.
I downvoted because “Not having read the article” is disqualifying for commenting on the article when the article (unsurprisingly) includes remarks about the topic at hand.
There's no prize for participation, and they very clearly didn't do even the most rudimentary testing before paying for an in-depth third party analysis. I'd say that this reflects a profoundly childish approach to software, but that is unfair to children: I remember how much testing I did of my crappy game before I submitted it to STFormat when I was 12.
This is like paying for a pentest of a treehouse, and claiming that this implies the updated treehouse with a working padlock instead of a novelty lock is in the same league as a bank or a data center.
It makes mongodb from the report a decade ago look good.
The discussion section of the report is very damning.
> Black Friday is more about kicking off the Christmas buying season
Yes, exactly. A holiday celebrating rampant consumerism? Fuck that shit.
I got access denied, and then it worked after a refresh.
“With all due respect sir, I have always felt free to voice my opinions, even when they differ from those of Captain Picard or Commander Riker.” --Worf, when he's getting chewed out by Data
Absence of evidence is evidence, it's just not very strong evidence.
To say nothing of The Inner Light, where in a real sense he lives out the road not travelled.
“Captain, I must protest: I am not a merry man!”
Amusingly, “robot” as a term was invented as a way to refer to machines that were more than just machines: it was the original word for android.
The correct analogy is the bank securing the loan with the car, and then potentially repossessing that car.
Don't ask for a loan if you don't want a loan.
Sounds like The Ensigns of Command:
> LAFORGE: Captain, we can do it. We can modify the transporters.
> PICARD: Excellent.
> LAFORGE: It'll take fifteen years, and a research team of a hundred.
> PICARD: Mister La Forge, I believe we will postpone.
> LAFORGE: Yes, sir.
> but then no one can say anything to anyone about anything
I was going to say that this is an absurd leap, but going off your username I suspect that was the point.
The pizzaria has the cost built in to the base price; minute-by-minute tracking of food/labour/delivery cost has been table stakes for pizza restaurant software since the 90's.
A lot of stores are contracting to dd or ic or whatever to provide those free delivery services.
From the driver perspective, it permits some redunduncy in case of issues with the company. The support you get as a driver for dd or ic is more or less the same as you get with any internet company: non-existant for anything that isn't routine or touches on allegations of fraud or misconduct.
DD's new metric no longer even lets you dispute reports that an order wasn't delivered, with the obvious issues that come from that: having accounts with other apps in good standing is necessary to maintain your income if and when something stupid happens.
It was built into the price; typically with extensive “carry out” discounts for people who picked up their orders.
You are given an order, which you can decline. If you decline more than a handful, you get deprioritized; in practice this means that you tap accept on every order as it comes up. At
best you can
sometimes shift the balance a
bit by where you wait between orders, but during busy times (which is also when restaurants have long lines), your next order is coming up the moment you finish the last one.
It's also worth noting that most restaurants set the instructions for the pickup, which is usually along the lines of “go to the front of the line and provide the staff with the order number”.
The “can't answer” thing is probably the reason I never contributed. I don't know the specific reasoning behind it, but it's such a self-defeating solution to whatever problem they thought they were solving.
“Instead, labor and computing power are being diverted toward a singular “frontier-model effort””
Sounds like the opposite of what you're suggesting they're doing?

Couldn't have said it better myself
window.zig: widget.addCssClass("no-border-radius") when no compositor is detected seems like it should be preventing this, but it's clearly not working.
Are the context menus hardcoded? Ghosttty is the only app on my machine that uses those horrendous rounded context menus, and because I don't use a compositor, they also have a giant black band around them. None of the config file settings seemed relevant, but maybe I missed something?
It's murderously hard to machine.
