New York was also very poor, barring some rich businessmen. You have to look at it relatively to its surrounding. Of course there were poor people too, but they lived in the “suburbs”, not in the middle of deserts like, say, in the US.
Re:Singapore: Sovereign City on Sunday December 05, 2021 @06:11AM (#29448397)
Underdeveloped by whose standard? An underdeveloped city does not seek independence. You have to place it in its context. It probably was not the poorest city by a long shot even at its birth.
Re:Singapore: Sovereign City on Sunday December 05, 2021 @03:05AM (#29447633)
I always find it awkward to compare city-states to regular-sized countries. There is no “rural Singapore.” A lot of these independent cities are tiny because they were rich and powerful to begin with; That’s a fantastic starting point that no other country can have.

There’s not much many other countries can learn from Singapore because they all either don’t have enough money or have a greater variety of people to convince.

Re:Apple broke up with me on Sunday December 05, 2021 @12:00AM (#29446825)
> residential routers plus a USB stick will make this more possible.

This smells like "let them eat cake" except in the context of technology. Not everyone is able or even wants to mess with that stuff. There's a vast difference between "Yes, backup my stuff, Apple; Here's my card" and "I know what an IP is"

At $12/year you literally cannot get anything like what Apple offers just in terms of backup — not the equipment, not the man hours required to maintain it. Even if I were able to set it all up, it would cost me a huge amount of money in lost revenue just to maintain it safely.

It feels like "I could build dropbox in 5 minutes" never stopped.

That page looks great, I don't know what you're talking about. Are you bothered by 2 very plain gradients? I don't see candy at all
I suppose nobody can ask about résumé anymore

Your parents’ ADSL noodle soup is a little bland.
> This is a proof of concept

If it was a proof of concept, fine, but it's not, the author intends to develop this further and is accepting signups. I do not want this web. Just publish PDFs if you want to design fixed media.

> it's worth exploring

Hard disagree.

> People have said that for literally everything we have on the web now

What I meant is that here the intent is to design something once and display it in the browser as if it was an image (or printed media), i.e. without filling the window properly.

This is 100% like displaying a PDF in a browser and it does not belong in one.

Thanks for sharing this! I'm glad that there's a way
Kids can't explain their emotions. Non-developers can't tell what's wrong with websites.

Just because they don't complain about something specifically, it doesn't mean that they don't feel discomfort.

The problem with SVG is that it performs terribly especially when compared with Flash. This site is relatively small and it's super slow on an i9
To me it sounds like the author has nearly-zero experience in web development and thus prefers publishing websites straight out of Illustrator.
Your site is laggy, zero accessibility, microscopic text unless your window is large enough, does not support anything you'd expect from a regular website. Just ship a PDF already.

The web is not paper, don't design for it as if it as.

Oh, and this little page weighs 4.5MB

This kind of stuff ought to be regulated somehow, one can’t lose access to one’s life.

I recently wasn’t able to recover an old account because I did not have access to my 2FA number and their help site suggested I “contact the phone company to recover the number, then try again.”

I had to do the same exact thing for another service but they did allow me to change the number by providing some information like last transaction, ID, selfie with statement.

Re:Show HN: Emoji to Scale on Thursday December 02, 2021 @10:21PM (#29426286)
Goat: 45cm

Duck: 50cm

Might as well say “shuffled emojis with random data attached”

Re:Making Websites Small on Thursday December 02, 2021 @05:29AM (#29414496)
I hate it when ignorant people talk out of their asses.
Re:Making Websites Small on Wednesday December 01, 2021 @01:15PM (#29407130)
Wrong. Of course if you use a minifier you save bytes, it’s by definition. A decent built tool can still start from static files but also optimize them as much as possible. If there’s little CSS it might even just inline it.
Yes but they can still:

- block the company nationwide, see Huawei (also includes ceasing contracts with app stores, both of which are American)

- block access to your website, see TPB

- harass you when you travel, either to the US or fellow countries.

WhatsApp has its own backups in addition to regular full-phone iCloud backups.

If WhatsApp does not encrypt its content at rest locally, then “iCloud backups” still contain everything unencrypted too.

Re:4x Smaller, 50x Faster on Monday November 29, 2021 @11:08PM (#29388846)
Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think showing a string on screen requires React or any other view library.

I’d probably paint it on canvas and then overlay an invisible plaintext node to allow selection.

Re:Caddy – Open-source web server with automatic HTTPS on Monday November 29, 2021 @11:18AM (#29381588)
It’s funny that your complaint about opaque answers got responses that imply that performance doesn’t matter.

What this tells me is that Caddy is slower than its competitors and they know it. If it wasn’t, then they wouldn’t hide behind meaningless responses.

Basically they answered without answering.

Re:Caddy – Open-source web server with automatic HTTPS on Monday November 29, 2021 @11:14AM (#29381527)
To be fair, HTTPS by default makes perfect sense for a server. Of course the more complex the setup, the more you’re going against the defaults. It’s impossible to have defaults that work for everyone, so they chose the most common/desirable/sellable default.
Re:Fleet, a Lightweight IDE from JetBrains on Monday November 29, 2021 @10:44AM (#29381112)
> What's the long-term play that I'm missing?

Bet: They’re building the core for all of their future products.

Start free, gain momentum, have “pro” addons, slowly start offering products like WebStorm but built on top of Fleet.

Re:Fleet, a Lightweight IDE from JetBrains on Monday November 29, 2021 @10:37AM (#29381024)
To be fair the same could be said about Sublime Text, yet here we are.

If JetBrains releases a free tool that competes well with VSC on core features, I don’t see why the community wouldn’t adopt it.

VSC is far from perfection, it’s only a step up from ST in that it offers a few more tools by default.

What I noticed, either in iOS 15 or on my iPhone 13 Pro, is that swiping gestures often don’t complete. That means closing tabs in Safari, switching apps with the bottom bar, often “come back” as if I didn’t swipe fast enough. This is quite annoying because I have to repeat the gesture multiple times for it to be completed.

Safari has been behaving stupidly too: I type n, I see the autocomplete for news.ycombinator appear, I press the Go key… it searches Google for “n”. It’s maddening.

Re:Ask HN: Why is Docusign a $50B company? on Saturday November 27, 2021 @10:35PM (#29365971)
DocuSign does not cost $10. It costs $10/month, which is waaaay more I’d spend to save past signed documents in the cloud.

It’d be “cheap” or an acceptable price if a signed document costed $5. Subscriptions are BS for occasional users.

Re:My Custom CSS Reset on Saturday November 27, 2021 @03:49AM (#29358698)
Things maybe be "addressed," but that doesn't make them right.

> Apple disabled subpixel antialiasing across the operating system

Right, so what is he disabling exactly?

> Chrome and Safari still use subpixel antialiasing by default

Wrong. They do not. Zoom in yourself. There are no colored pixels.

That CSS line basically acts as a `font-weight: -=100` across the document. That's all it does, and that does not belong to a CSS reset. You might as well set the rest of the `font` properties and call it a regular stylesheet.

Oh that was 50 years ago, it was a different time.

I wonder how many disgusting things we'll be looking back at in 2070.

Re:My Custom CSS Reset on Saturday November 27, 2021 @01:58AM (#29358176)
The reset is reasonable except the antialiasing line. Shame. It was discussed just a couple of days ago on HN.
