Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:16AM (#50337946)
For me it's just because I've been using Ubuntu full time since 2008 and has served me well my entire career, I think it's fair to say it's the flagship desktop OS that introduced many to Linux.

I feel like we're close to a post-distro era of operating systems though. My ansible playbook customizes so much already it wouldn't take too much more to just start from debian tbh.

The hardware needed to render those AAA cinematic experiences is more expensive than ever though.

I have a very nice PC for gaming and even still most games I play looks like it could run on a potato XD

Proton should release their own reddit too lol.
Halloween was explicitly banned in New England for most of our history.

I believe the Irish brought the tradition here much later and then American consumerism came along turning into what it has become

Personally I'm over it, candy is bad for you anyway.

There is a theory that the industrial and information revolutions rewarded certain types of neurodiversity more than what you was natural, I think that is entirely plausible.

While some of those traits may be prone to antisocial behavior, given the right social cooking conditions, they are also natural so I don't think people with those traits shouldn't be considered "cooked" from from brith either.

There are also seemingly neurotypical people who win the lottery and get cooked, I think it mostly comes from alienation because wealth changes how others around you act.

Not so hard to believe when they can replicate everything and experience anything in the holodek, outside the vacuum of starfleet the trek universe is not a utopia.
Re:The Great American Rascal: Tom Sawyer at 150 on Thursday October 29, 2026 @11:29PM (#50299565)
Cultural ages of relative sexual liberation and suppression is normal too. It's a material world so yeah there are material causes, but the way people are and respond to those pressures never change because we're still the same creatures as we were hundreds of thousands of years ago.
Re:The Great American Rascal: Tom Sawyer at 150 on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:33PM (#50298804)
Times change but people don't.
Show me where on the doll China touched you XD
If only we took data privacy laws seriously here then we wouldn't be in such a predicament, just more consequences of our protectionist economy.
Extreme wealth seems to cook people's brains.
Yeah safety, that's what it's all about
Re:Somebody please stop the spam texts on Monday October 26, 2026 @05:25PM (#50251221)
Worst thing I ever did was donate twenty seven bucks to Bernie, RIP my SMS inbox lol. I'll never make a political contribution again.
Re:US designates helium as a critical material on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:17PM (#50250300)
I've heard Helium is a limited resource so if we have leaky wells here I think we should be preserving as much of that is possible, it's too bad it takes pressure from an unnecessary conflict to do the right thing here.
Re:US designates helium as a critical material on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:11PM (#50250198)
FINALLY! Helium is for welding and science not goddamn party balloons, hydrogen party balloons sounds way more fun anyway (just keep them away from birthday candles).
Re:ReactOS reaches major milestone with NTFS install support on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:38AM (#50177298)
Thanks to these language models there is no such thing as closed source software anymore, eventually there will be an OS that runs everything.
Re:DeepSeek just open-sourced its inference engine on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:24AM (#50177199)
It can remix things people have already documented but can it synthesize an entirely new thing?

> HR, social work, family courts, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies, church leaders, and academics

Unfortunately the kind people attracted to these jobs are exactly the kind people we want to keep out of them.

Many people belive the second one ended.
No religions are states, that is just your political opinion. I think it's a really toxic opinion because it then leads to the question of the potential allegiance to a foreign nation of anyone based on their religion. This is the same reason why a Catholic president was once controversial, because back then people believed there was a Catholic state secretly controlling them.

In my political opinion Israel is an artificially created state which is why it's so unstable and we should simply walk away and cut our losses on this. I believe my opinion is the prevailing populist opinion too so y'all have to contend with that.

There needs to be some compromise between our points of view or else we'll continue to get more war and violence. I think our country needs to recognize our responsibility for this mess and should offer land in North America of equivalent value for any Zionist refugees and then leave the poor people of that land alone. I ultra extremists would feel right at home in the Catskills lol.

It's clear they are trying to turn reddit into a new legacy media platform where the information and narrative is controlled at the top. I don't think it will be very effective, the country is too fragmented now including our online networks.
Israel is not a religion.
But North Korea, Russia, and Iran isn't supported on our tax dollars. In this case we're literally paying another country to infiltrate ourselves.
Try using GPT to write software like this, I don't think just anyone could do it unless they know the problem domain well. Understanding something is not something any AI can replace (yet).

Re:Blizzard Workers Win Historic Union Contract on Thursday September 10, 2026 @03:43AM (#49639878)
I think Valve sets a good example for an alternative, while not union they operate with a flat structure and is not publicly traded which sets them apart. They're kinda like an elite guild of game developers.
Re:Have a Fucking Website on Wednesday March 18, 2026 @03:30AM (#47422652)
Backblaze offers 10 GB of free storage and CloudFlare offers free data transfer from B2, with these two you can host a static site for free. I have a worker script that routes requests to the index page and sets cache headers for my site.

  export default {
    async fetch(req, env, ctx) {
      // Cached response
      let res = await caches.default.match(req);
      if (res) return res;

      // Fetch object from origin
      let reqPath = new URL(req.url).pathname;
      reqPath = reqPath.replace(/\/$/, ''); // Remove trailing slash
      if (!reqPath.includes('.')) // Check file extension
        reqPath += '/index.html'; // Default to index page

      res = await fetch(env.ORIGIN + reqPath);
      if (res.status === 404) // Object not found
        res = await fetch(env.ORIGIN + '/404.html');

      // Configure content cache
      res = new Response(res.body, res);
      const ttl = res.headers.get('content-type').startsWith('text')
        ? 14400 : 31536000; // Cache text 4 hours, 1 year default
      res.headers.set('cache-control', 'public, max-age=' + ttl);

      // Cache and return response
      ctx.waitUntil(caches.default.put(req, res.clone()));
      return res;
    },
  };
