Re:Dead USB Drives Are Fine: Building a Reliable Sneakernet on Sunday September 04, 2022 @08:02PM (#32718988)
YoU'vE g0t mE nOstAlgiC for AOL. I wrote my own chat file servers and apps for downloading(which amounted to opening a span of emails and adding to download manager.) Chat servers I made/used forwarded the uploaded emails, first made with a tool like you're talking about if not included, but then you'd typically unpack it yourself after dl. AOL has a bad rep with tech people, but it was sure nice them hosting all this rather than what you might have elsewhere and a fun platform to play on.

Tasks like this or even punters(html heading tag denial of service through instant message lol) were what got me interested in programming in middle school, no training or education, just hacking around trying to figure things out in a pirated VB3.0. The community was great with private chatrooms full of users testing and helping others, trying out tools. People shared libraries to learn from, use, adapt. Anyone remember the popular old and terribly named genocide.bas? I'd like to get my hands on some of these old proggies and code if they're still out there.. Or even just the cartoon sheep program which would run around the desktop interacting with window borders.

Yeah, bt keyboard on my lap and I've raised the tv to a suitable position. Right now I'm laying flat with my back at like 45 degrees and keyboard over crotch area. Once I started connecting my laptop to the tv there was no going back, decided I'd usually rather watch media on a smaller screen and use the tv for mainly computing. Now I have a new desktop that can support it all and also run a usb extension and hub to my side. Most OS's are pretty good with different scaling/accessibility options these days.
If they post $1 or whatever small/min wage, I think we can now at least assume they intend to pay the lowest stated or allowed.
Desk? My workspace is a bed, with a 50in tv for a monitor at the foot and two big monitors stacked to the side. Has anyone else gone the completely lazy route? I can work or game longer and in complete comfort, but also swivel them if I ever wanted to sit. A fourth monitor is at my desk collecting dust. This type of setup requires you to be celibate and living on the fringes of society. But I type this wrapped in a blanket, head nested in pillows.

I think Neil Young tried to cancel him right? Young is from a different generation than me, but I had the notion he'd be more free-speak/free-thought/don't trust the man minded. Maybe that is what happens when a pharma exec buys your catalog? Or was that misinformation?

The Mountain Dew ad was bit much.
If LA wants more water, I think they need to desalinate rather than diverting more and more long distances to populate the desert. I know that's not easy. And of course cutting way down on almonds is a great idea and needed, but still the central valley is already poor as hell and the water you want is all their little wealth. You have to think about how making these poor communities poorer and LA richer will effect people and places. There's only a few million less people in the valley than LA country. And about almonds, the enormous factory farms just north of LA need to be the ones taken out, not family ranches. But the thing is, LA will only ever want and demand more.

LA needs to figure something out to not be completely reliant on other places as they continue to expand. You talk about population carrying capacity, I'd say LA has already hit it then, very naturally. Use all that wealth to make some of your own. They just like to take with their might. We saw what happened when they created the largest ecological disaster in California history diverting water. I think we need to see they are serious, and they need to put up and make big investments instead of always taking. For every gallon we give them, they should have to create a gallon of their own. It's fine and true to say almonds are wasteful, but that doesn't mean it should be LA's water.

This is cool, but I imagine those sprinkles might easily fall off or be shifted. The packaging they put edibles in are often crazy strong, but just the act of prying at the packaging or solving the puzzle might put your sprinkles at risk. Maybe temperature changes too would cause trouble.

Why not just print a key on the packaging? Or have each one wrapped individually in paper or what have you with a key. Might make better sense for other drugs. A database like this would provide some interesting info.

I can see it now, OP in handcuffs for casing the joint.

I loved the Sega versions, 1, 2, and 3 I think. Being able to upgrade bikes made the story mode a lot of fun for the time. And the cut scenes after races were epic. Eat my chain, Lawler!
People are saying that right now about the new Star Treks. And I don't think most disagree with the politics/social commentary, it's just so in your face/contrived that it ruins the show for many.

Re:Please make a dumb car on Wednesday February 02, 2022 @03:20PM (#30183436)
Yep, other guy is correct, and wires were my first concern, but they are long and you just shim them in between the panels around and down the windows. Same with the back, but there you might have to get more creative running the wire and mounting the camera depending on vehicle.
Re:Please make a dumb car on Monday January 31, 2022 @11:58PM (#30158796)
Yeah it's a dashcam, records 4k in the front, and 2.5k the rear camera. I'm sure the screen is much less, but looks great on my tv.
Re:Please make a dumb car on Monday January 31, 2022 @11:53PM (#30158769)
It's a Kingslim DL12 and is powered through the cigarette lighter or directly connected.
Re:Please make a dumb car on Monday January 31, 2022 @02:30PM (#30152971)
I bought an aftermarket camera that's like ford's, but it just slips over the old mirror. Thing is great, shoots 4k and is not integrated to the car's system. Also has voice commands, so its super easy to use the real mirror or any other functions. Screen in the mirror is the way.
If covid happened 30 years ago, I can imagine public safety ads about kids sharing and blowing on NES catridges to make them work, quite a vector.

Re:Back Orifice (1998) on Saturday September 04, 2021 @05:54PM (#28419669)
Sub7 was a lot of fun. So many options. I will add to the computer lab anecdotes. I gave this to my buddies at school who were in the same crew(we mostly made VB 'proggies' for AOL,) but of course two of them install it in the library computer lab. I told them it's not illegal to have but is to use. They mess with students even doing things like deleting essays being written. The IT people figure it out and my buddies get arrested and cut ties. They are expelled for a whole year and when they come back can't use any school computers. Did anyone ever figure out if there was a backdoor in the backdoor from the maker?

But that kind of stuff is what got me interested in computers and programming back in junior high. Learned the basics of control statements and OOP in a fun engaging way. I made an AOL chatroom mailserver with sendkeys :D and later became more advanced using APIs. These were very much like mIRC but AOL hosted all the files so even better. There were private chatrooms based on just making these things and prewritten libraries floating around. Who remembers genocide.bas?(hey I didn't name it) Anybody have these? I have copies somewhere on a zip drive.

Remember punters? In dialup days you could flood a person with chat messages containing html heading tags that would slow them down rendering to the point they could never catch up. Others eventually found exploits that could crash the app on one message.

The Trojans for AOL were also pretty good. Would capture the password field and once connected open an email in the background and send it wherever, then delete sent. Back then though you could as easily just say you are an admin and ask someone for their password. Your whole neighborhood probably openly sharing through netbeui.

I think it's long enough ago to say I ran an FTP on mirc and the password was like the 5th word on the xdrive free account confirmation page. They started at $2 a referral and I bought a nice 17" ViewSonic monitor to play Quake on in the 8th grade. Other friends bought whole computers. Shut that down when the FTP got hacked and I got a cease and desist letter for 3d studio max, thought the law was coming to break down my door. After that I mellowed out.

Re:New [July 2, 2021] Audacity Data Collection Policy on Monday July 05, 2021 @09:36AM (#27737823)
Thanks for the reply, that's kinda what I thought. I can see the advantages keeping some things around, but man I like a complete remove all option and not something vague.
Re:New [July 2, 2021] Audacity Data Collection Policy on Saturday July 03, 2021 @09:27PM (#27726591)
When I uninstall in Windows, I get this dialog:

"Audacity uninstall complete.

Some elements could not be removed. These can be removed manually."

Anyone aware of what elements and where? I see it left some configs in AppData.

My favorite was undercutters pizza, where he would follow pizza delivery guys, then beat them to the door and offer a lower price. He carried the toppings around in a tackle box to be added.

Re:The Belugas Have Landed on Friday May 21, 2021 @09:07AM (#27233521)
> More than two years after the initial request was made, five beluga whales have left their overcrowded home at Marineland, an amusement park in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and arrived at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. The move came about a month after Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) quietly approved the controversial permit for the whales’ export.

so was it just a sale?

Re:Sublime Text 4 on Friday May 21, 2021 @08:52AM (#27233376)
I buy mostly nothing, use ms alternatives like libre office, blender, gimp, resolve, darktable, etc, but sublime text has been a fantastic lightweight ide, like a notepad++ or gedit. Even when other big companies are coming out with nice free smaller than before apps, I'm happy to have bought sublime. I find I can use many editors at the same time for different uses to separate my minutia.
