I did this on one of my APs that fails frequently (locks up and the front lights go off, signal strength randomly goes down to about 8 feet with no obstructions, etc) and it helped immensely. unfortunately, it didn't /solve/ the problem for me, just made it better. I've ordered some unifi stuff on recommendation from friends. hopefully that'll live up to the hype and do the job.

That, and if you can do it, it's cool.

That level of transparency, yes. However, my terminal emulator is set to 35% opacity, and I like it and can use it just fine; I use it frequently, too, multiple times per day.

I somehow managed to disable all of them before that change happened. I receive no Facebook notifications anymore, and happily look at Facebook ~once every 3 months.

I bought a first gen apple product with this in mind (new macbook), and it's been surprisingly good. My usb adapter sucks, yes, so that's a pain, but since it's not my primary computer it doesn't matter so much. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone as their primary computer. That being said, when the next one comes out I'm ditching this one and getting the new one; first-gen apple products are really mostly proof-of-concept it seems. (iPad 1 vs iPad 2, for example)

It took me a bit to realize that there was an issue with ADD vs ADHD inattentive, and I pissed off a few people before I started doing this.

I went to the linked http://fuckadblock.sitexw.fr/ and their publicity example didn't load. Looks like my adblock rules are doing their job!

My first thought was something XKCD related. I was dissapointed.
Re:Ask HN: I'm terrified of death. What do I do?
on Thursday May 14, 2015 @03:48PM (#9547184)
This pretty much describes my experiences so far. I've gotten better at not thinking about it, but sometimes when I'm extremely tired I think about those exact things you do, with the addition of wether or not my consciousness exists elsewhere in addition to myself, or anywhere at all. I eventually just decided it wasn't worth thinking about (which was hard!) and try to avoid it as much as possible. What happens, happens.
Also, we are making great advancement in medical areas to keep us functional and able into old age, which I think is encouraging. I don't want to die, but I don't want to live forever either, so I think I'll try to make as much of an impact as I can while I'm still here.
Edit: When I was younger, I wondered if my parents were actually different people every day. That was weird.
Re:Ask HN: New job is having me switch from Linux to Mac – how do I cope?

I use the TotalTerminal addon for the stock terminal for a slide-out-from-the-side terminal that I can leave up and not have get in the way. It's really handy.
Re:Does your Macbook adapter plug wire break?

I go through about one a year. It sucks. We have school-issued MacBooks at my school, and my charger caught on fire. Tech guy would't replace it until it did, even though I was holding it together with tape. Didn't hurt the computer, surprisingly.

Ditto. Done with catching up on other stuff? CMD-T n enter. When it's perpetual tab gets closed, that is.

Actually, in safari, you can double-click on a link to highlight it, and the right-click menu has options "Go To Address" and "Go To Address in new tab". Quite useful.
Re:Ask HN: How much screen time do you let your kids have?

Hey, that last sounds like me. I had books confiscated as a kid in english class because I read too much. This wasn't a big deal, because I always carried at least three, but looking back it's pretty funny.

If I ever have kids, this sounds like a good idea. If my parents had limited screen time, this is how I would have wanted it to be limited.

I remember dial up. I'm 18. I had it for several years before we switched to satellite, then verizon hotspot, then (pending). I'm sorry, but remembering dialup is not any indication of age.

This sounds like me before I was diagnosed with ADD. I thought I couldn't work hard, even if I wanted to. Not saying that's your issue, but something to think about.
