Re:If Stackexchange ran Adsense on Sunday December 18, 2011 @07:20PM (#3367925)
They tried Adsense on StackOverflow. It was a "crushing disappointment". See http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2009/08/podcast-64/
Re:Design is Horseshit on Friday December 16, 2011 @05:46AM (#3360304)
I don't think design should ever be slapped on. But I do think it makes the most sense to test and launch a first version with what amounts to a functional wireframe/prototype, if possible.
According to this April 2011 LA Times article [1], six senior VP's now oversee these areas: mobile, social, Chrome, YouTube/video, search, and ads.

I agree. I've also found this perl script handy for recursive find/replace: http://www.neilgunton.com/doc/deep

$ deep replace "foo" "bar" "*.html"

Great concept. Love it. Adding to my toolkit.

Maybe consider leveraging/partnering with http://userstyles.org.

Re:Google: Your new phone carrier? on Thursday December 30, 2010 @08:17PM (#2054152)
Personally, I would love to see Google in the carrier business, but it would be a huge risk to their brand/image.

Most everyone loves Google right now. Most everyone hates wireless carriers. So, it sounds like it could be a good opportunity. But there are reasons people hate carriers that are either outside of the carriers' control or too costly to fix completely on a global level (ie. spotty coverage, slow connections, great expectations, etc)

Even if Google became the #1 carrier, their valuable, mostly unblemished image could take a big hit.

Google's ability to simplify/scale technology for the masses (Google search, Gmail) won't help as much when it comes to dealing with frustrated customers on the telephone who want to speak to someone right now.

Re:Paul Buchheit: Four Reasons Google is still Awesome on Tuesday December 21, 2010 @10:22PM (#2030459)
Yeah, me too. Hate those popups. To remove: (1) download Stylish add-on for chrome or firefox, (2) add CSS style below

  #vspb, button.ws, button.vspib { display: none !important }
  .vspi { background: none !important; border: none !important }
Re:Groupon Rejects Google's $6B Offer. on Saturday December 04, 2010 @12:23AM (#1968580)
Yeah, besides being first mover and the associated brand recognition, I don't know what competitive advantages Groupon really has. Especially when sites like http://www.sandiegosaves.net/ are able to "aggregate" the deals from all the daily deal websites.
Re:Apple announces iTunes 10 with Ping Social Network on Wednesday September 01, 2010 @05:47PM (#1654413)
Yes, Winamp 2.95 still is outstanding. Simple, functional, tiny footprint, etc.

Get it here: http://www.oldversion.com/Winamp.html and apply AlpineAmp skin: http://customize.org/winamp2/skins/4571

The lesson- Sometimes newer and more "features" != better.

Re:Google honors Topeka, Kansas by becoming... Topeka. on Thursday April 01, 2010 @03:26AM (#1234085)
Another great move by Google.. great PR for honoring Topeka, great April Fools joke, great way to bring attention to Google broadband, great way to continue being the "good guys", etc.
