Facebook Marketplace is another hellhole that Meta could not care less to regulate. Beyond the fact that virtually all commerce platforms have some mechanism to prevent scams, which of course Facebook completely omits, the sheer amount of ilegal products/services sold there is terrifying.

Regarding the fact that “Meta does not make money from Marketplace itself”, this could be true at face value, nonetheless there is a significant amount of users on Facebook only for this feature in particular. In turns this represents more customers to serve ads to and profit from them.

Re:Git 3.0's upcoming SHA-256 default will be a costly mistake on Thursday October 01, 2026 @11:24PM (#49929540)
Claude, make the hash use SHA-256 rather than SHA-1. No errors plsss.

Besides the possible implementation/deployment issues they will or will not face with this update, I can empathize with the idea that of not wanting to have a possible vector of attack in your system. Particularly today with AI being able to find novel exploits, I could see a future where a vulnerable hashing system leads to a malicious injection attack.

The author argues that "If I wanted to get untrusted code into Android, it's so much simpler to bribe or convince the maintainer of a popular downstream project" which is a really a red herring in this matter since that is literally a completely different issue that obviously no software update could ever fix.

Nonetheless I do agree with him in regards of how complicated and messy this whole process will be. Crypto migrations have been historically difficult, expensive and overall ugly, but not impossible...

NSA allegedly used to have a "black budget" of around a couple dozen million dollars for software sabotaging. I wonder what percentage of those CVEs could be related to it...

It's beyond me how binary their thinking is when dealing with an issue as nuanced as AI. For instance euros have oral exams often and they are much more helpful on seeing if the kid has any idea on what they are doing. Furthermore it forces them to think through the problem more clearly since they have to explain it to someone else at some point (rather than some autograder).
