This is it, they are media consumption devices.
Important context here is that many of these streaming services operated at a loss for years, and some still are. HBO Max didn’t turn a profit until 2023 and Disney only become profitable in 2024 after bundling with Hulu. AFAIK Paramount+ and Peacock are still in the red.

Point being, the introductory prices for these services were always unsustainable.

The higher prices is also wrong, adjusted for inflation. And the lower-quality products is subjective at best.

I really hate when authors undermine their own (often valid) points.

I think it is more than that though. Parenthood is a long, multi-year process full of hormones, self-reflection, and fundamental changes to your psyche. A non-parent can intellectually understand what happens and why, can emotionally understand or feel that love by swapping out kids with partners, pets, etc. But I believe there is a level of understanding that is just not possible unless you also go through that process. Hard to describe. Closest analog I can think of right now is my perspective on pregnancy vs my wife's.
I love Casio watches, perfect blend of utilitarian and nerd. Wearing my 5000U-1JF right now.
One of those reasons being you can walk into any Walmart across the country and walk out with one for about $22 USD.

I don't have evidence for this, but I suspect a lot of it is Reddit refugees.
As a millennial growing up it was beaten into our head that smoking was a death sentence. I recently looked up what the actual cancer rate among smokers was... about 125k people in the US die of lung cancer annual. 25 million people smoke annually. That is a 0.5% chance for occasional smokers. Even if you smoke a pack a day your entire life, the cancer rate is less than 15%.

I am in no way saying it is okay to smoke, there are obviously other health risks associated with it... but researching that made me feel much better about that one pack a year I buy for vacation.

Google has a bit of a Network Effect going... my vehicle got an OTA update to use Gemini. Between that, search, storage, and the YT Premium bundle it was enough to convince me to float a subscription.

Diablo is currently in a bit of a resurgence, the latest expansion was quite good.
Re:Windows CE Dreamcast Community Edition (wince-dc) on Saturday July 04, 2026 @05:01PM (#48789067)
Same, especially because at the time of Dreamcasts’s release - Windows CE was everywhere in the handhelds and PDA market.

Hey I remember that site! I bought one from there as well, although I couldn't afford the actual replica so settled on a brown squarish one that came as a necklace.
Re:GTA 6 will cost $80 on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @12:06PM (#48661969)
It is just speculation at this point, no official numbers yet. Some leaks have suggested a size about that, and it seems to be in-part corroborated by the physical editions being download codes.
Re:GTA 6 will cost $80 on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @12:04PM (#48661931)
And this is why I roll my eyes when gamers complain about the cost of games these days - they have never been cheaper.
Re:GTA 6 will cost $80 on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @11:58AM (#48661848)
It is Rockstar, they haven't missed in a couple of decades and this is their flagship product.
Re:GTA 6 will cost $80 on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @11:55AM (#48661805)
There is speculation that the size on disk will be over 200Gb, so one advantage is preloading that.
Re:GTA 6 will cost $80 on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @11:51AM (#48661744)
Which would be $94.29 in today's dollars.
Re:GTA 6 will cost $80 on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @11:50AM (#48661725)
Over a decade of development and an estimated budget between $1-2 Billion, I am okay with paying ten bucks more. There are significantly lesser games selling for full retail.
It is really disheartening to see the sentiment around privacy erode like this. Fifteen or even ten years ago this would have been unanimously and vehemently opposed, but now it is somehow up for debate?
Re:Why thinking out loud with someone beats thinking alone on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @04:58PM (#48576796)
I can only speak for myself... but my inner monologue is just a runaway train of thoughts that I vocalize in my head as I work through them. There is no other person in there, abstract or otherwise. Have you ever seen the Death Note anime? Similar to that.
Re:Why thinking out loud with someone beats thinking alone on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @04:33PM (#48576449)
I think there is a difference between having an inner monologue, and imagining a conversation with another person in your head.
Case in point, Microsoft just announced it is toying with the idea of using DeepSeek as a cheaper model tier in CoPilot. They are hosting the model themselves.
There is theory to learn and it is important, but it is all for naught if you don’t understand how what you are protecting works. You need both for an entry level position - there is a reason those positions pay as well as they do.
This is broadly true for all concentrations in cyber. There is no entry level. Your first job should be learning how what you want to focus on works… be it networking, sysadmin, devops, vendor risk management, etc.

Unfortunately, cybersecurity was a hot topic in the education market and people got sold on the idea that they could get a six figure job with nothing but some theory and an entry level certification.

Certainly not in the year of our lord, 2026. Maybe in a few years though.
PDFs are generally meant for printed paper, it's not you - it's the medium.
It is a curious thing how drinking affects people in different ways. Some people get reflective, others belligerent.

Not to all, plenty of us call them Legos.
