Re:U.S. to let airlines limit service animals on planes on Wednesday January 22, 2020 @09:46PM (#22124364)
I was on a flight from FTL to NYC and saw some guy bring a duck on the flight. The duck was classified as his emotional support animal.

It was a good idea, but once again people ruin a good thing.

Re:Anthony Levandowski Charged with Theft of Trade Secrets on Tuesday August 27, 2019 @06:22PM (#20815030)
I seriously doubt this will result in any jail time. Levandowski's lawyers will do everything they can to see to it no time is served. But he will probably pay a fine.. chump change to this man.

And this pisses me off; people in America get thrown in jail for stealing chewing gum.

Re:The IT Guy vs. the Con Artist on Friday August 16, 2019 @01:38AM (#20712453)
82 years old, with serious cash flow issues. Choosing between food and meds? It's 50/50. In fact, living among them in Florida, I'd give odds that he'd choose to die.
Re:The IT Guy vs. the Con Artist on Thursday August 15, 2019 @03:39PM (#20708867)
I don't know why he was downloaded. I mean, come too Florida and talk to some 80 year old guy who has nothing, due to being scammed or ID theft.

Frankly, be better if you just killed the guy. Now this guy has to decide between food and meds because his SSI doesn't cover it all. And his savings are gone.

//Now I am curious, who runs production customer facing apps on Azure? I'm assuming many people do given that Azure is second after AWS in market share or is that really just mostly corporate IT servers?

The government does. Though AWS and IBM are also used. In other words, entries outside the bubble.

//The same way that fish eventually acquired the "lungs" genes.

Which took a million years. But now watch out - we can do it in 4 hours. That's the difference.

Re:The Horror of Microsoft Teams on Monday August 12, 2019 @07:25PM (#20681218)
Have you ever worked in Corporate America? Many times the decision to use something like Teams is made in an office across the country. And usually, its made with the vendor's sales team involved. This happens in government too, all the time.

You get an edict to use the software and the fun begins. I love the idea of including the CEO... have to remember that.

Re:How Old Is The Shepherd? (2013) on Friday July 26, 2019 @10:54PM (#20540121)
There is no answer. That's not the point. They want to know your response anyway. Will you be funny, loud, blunt - whatever you do, answer.
The other problems China has is resources and cash. As the article points out, if you include maintenance and upgrades, naval ships tend to be 3x the cost of building them. That's not cheap.

And resource wise, it is reliant on outside suppliers. Which also cost. Unlike America, China's fiances aren't infinite (America is due to oil).

I have no doubt China can easily afford invading Taiwan. I do have doubts about Japan though. Japan is mobilizing right now as well.

Re:More Google Employees Are Losing Faith in Their CEO's Vision on Saturday February 02, 2019 @03:29AM (#19061886)
Layers of middle management always sucks the life out of companies. And indeed governments. Try working for a bank, and you'll see exactly what I am talking about.
Re:What Isaac Asimov Taught Us About Predicting the Future on Thursday January 03, 2019 @04:06AM (#18813801)
Well he's right about the first party. As for the tools... people need to vote.. in the US at least.
And it's about time too. Prices were just stupid in NYC. Even in Queens and Brooklyn.

It needs a long correction.

Re:Dropping Acid on Wednesday November 28, 2018 @11:41AM (#18552983)
I remember music like this being played at the [gay] circuit parties in NYC (and beyond) in the early 90's. Sure the DJ's played favorites, but at like 3AM, these type of tunes played. Trance, I think it was called. Been a while.
Re:Brave – A private, secure and fast browser on Saturday October 06, 2018 @01:49PM (#18156335)
Mac version coming? I use AdGuard now, on Mac. But I'd like this on Mac as well. Safari I won't touch.
// The sustained users are ones that have good mods that improve the AI, and other aspects of the game. Civ 6 hasn't released the DLL, so us as modders, are in a holding pattern. Most of the major modders have quit (as have I) until the DLL is released.//

That's it right there. The Civ5 mod(s) "vox populi" is a must in any game I play. And it changes much of the game. Not possible to do in Civ6.

Also, I don't like the cartoon graphics of Civ6.

Why fonts? Or do they use fonts as an ID?
Some clients care. But many don't. They just want something to work.

And even if they did what is wrong about choosing PHP?

This is just bs. PHP is thriving everywhere expect Silicon Valley.
Since you listed PHP - take a lot at Laravel (https://laravel.com/)

Like Rails, you can get a a site/app up in minutes. .

Laravel. It's PHP and (assuming you know Laravel) you can get a it up in minutes. It's development time is as fast as Rails.

I'm not taking any chips from Rails. Rails was the first and is still one of the best. Just pointing out that there are other frameworks that are designed to move to production fast.

"plus PHP makes you a very uncommon find, right"

What? Half the programmers I know in NYC write PHP. The other half write a combo of Java/C#/Python. These aren't programmers working for startups - they are working for companies and the government.

PHP is used everywhere. Except maybe in SFO (and surrounding area).

I mean look at the job listings for NYC, DC, Miami, Baltimore, Louisville, etc, etc.

Look I know this board is focused on Silicon Valley, but it's a big world out there.

Re:America is losing the battle against robocalls on Wednesday May 23, 2018 @09:57PM (#17140394)
They are VOIP calls. And many are outside the US. And it's not just the robocalls- but I can't tell you how many calls I get a week about extending the maintenance plan on my car.

And frankly, someone is buying this shit. Else they wouldn't call. I mean if 1 sale is made for every 5,000 calls they've made their money. Same with scammers. Who the hell is going to fall for a robocall from the IRS? A call that's barely in English, and comes from a local number? Obviously, somebody does.

Re:It’s COBOL all the way down on Tuesday May 01, 2018 @06:54PM (#16972494)
I remember when MS brought out Fox. I was in Toledo at Fox's annual dev's conference (they were based in Toledo). I remember making a bet between a bunch of us [Fox dev's) how long it would take for MS to drop FP. I lost. Was off by a few years.

But I do remember MS pushing Access (which was and probably still is utter trash, compared to FP). And then VB6. I hate VB. I have nothing against the language itself. I'm just still bitter at MS replacing FP with VB.

I am involved in a project that is replacing FP with Python. Now Python I like a lot.

Re:It’s COBOL all the way down on Tuesday May 01, 2018 @02:39AM (#16964993)
I have a friend in NYC who makes a VERY nice living maintaining COBOL on mainframes. It's a niche market, so very few guys around who not only can read and write COBOL but also work on the mainframe.

I pretty much do what he does except with xbase (dbase, foxbase/pro and clipper) on PC's. There are millions of lines of code written in the 90's still happily running.

In fact, the only "tech" I see from the 90's that's pretty much dead and buried is Netware and Vines.

Damn shame too, cause I loved Netware. Ol'well. :)

We're both old farts, compared to most of you guys. He's 64 and I'm 55.

Re:The World’s Emptiest Airport Is a Red Flag on Monday April 09, 2018 @04:19PM (#16796604)
John Perkins does list specific examples in his book. Mostly located in Southeast Asia and South America. Not by name, of course. But by location. He talks about the politics of how these "deals" happened, who benefited and what role the military and state departments played.

His book is a great read.

Re:The Subway Is So Late, It’s Making New Yorkers Early on Sunday April 08, 2018 @06:00PM (#16788710)
When I lived in NYC.. lived in Chelsea. Used to walk down to the WTC, to work.

Was also one of the few in the office who lived in Manhattan. Everyone else was either Long Island or Jersey. So when bad weather hit, I had no excuse.

Re:The invisibility of Sheryl Sandberg on Tuesday April 03, 2018 @03:03PM (#16748000)
Here's her bio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liz_Peek

To sum it up: Wall Street (oil) -> law firm -> Treasury -> Fox News contributor. She's also Chair of the board of trustees for FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC).

She is not in tech.

History repeats itself. I mean, how many times does this have to happen? And in the end, the "elite rich" get their heads chopped off. Because when it comes down to it, it's a numbers game.

Russia, France, Spain, etc. etc.

I'd up-vote you twice if I could. Well said!
It's an election year. Promoting "gun control" of any kind will cost you votes (not to mention the non-stop attacks from the NRA). While promoting "loot box/gambling control" will gain you votes.

It's just that simple.

Now if I were EA (and other publishers) I'd throw 1/2 million at this senator. The best way to get him to shut up.
