No, I'd consider books absolutely necessary.

I personally think printing unless absolutely necessary is a waste of resources.
Re:Norway Eyes Partial Ban of Smart Glasses on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @09:00AM (#49977766)
I was a student who would wear my Google Glass out and about (in the UK) and no one ever said anything negative. Of course, they might've looked at me and thought I was a glasshole. Most people I interacted with were intrigued by the novelty.
For basic previewing I like to use https://htmledit.squarefree.com which has been online for years and does it all client side.
Am I right in thinking from the comparisons this only works at 4.9 to 6.0 GHz?
Just for a bit of comparison... I'm in the UK and don't drive. It is a 10-min walk to a big Tesco superstore, which is really convenient. It is on my commute too (which I also walk, Uber if its raining heavily).
It looks like the number of IPv4 /24s their ASN was announcing has dropped significantly: https://radar.cloudflare.com/routing/as5378#announced-ip-add...

An alternative might be to ask lots of mundane refrigeration questions, replying to each one with "that's cool"
In the UK we had something similar called Flux. I don't think it got widely adopted.

He also has a fascinating YouTube channel, I'm a big fan. Lots of old musical equipment and experiments in addition to telephony.
Is this different to http://insecam.org ?
Re:Typing 118 WPM Broke My Brain in the Right Ways on Tuesday June 03, 2025 @04:01AM (#44167565)
I have been using a vertical mouse for a long time now, and it is very comfortable for me. But it does take some getting used to, when I watch others trying to use my computer they always struggle with it. Interestingly as well as being more comfortable to use, I find that it improves my pointing accuracy, feels like fewer unnecessary movements.
Re:Persuasion methods for engineering managers on Tuesday May 13, 2025 @04:13AM (#43970672)
This is the case for me too for every Substack page in the past few days. I'm on desktop using Vivaldi as a browser.
Could SR-IOV VFs be a solution to that?
Re:MacBook Air M4 on Wednesday March 05, 2025 @10:42AM (#43268054)
I'm at exactly the same point with mine, it still feels like new even though it is nearly 5 years old.

I have yet to update beyond Monterey though (even though I really should) in case it slows down a bit or the battery life isn't as good.

Re:It's okay to code on nights and weekends on Friday January 03, 2025 @11:58AM (#42587297)
When I was a teenager and while studying at university I used to spend a lot of my spare time coding. Then after I got a job as a developer this dropped off quite quickly, opting instead to socialise and pursue other hobbies in that time.

Since becoming a manager at work less of my time is actual coding, and in the last 6 months or so I have started to code a lot more on my own projects and I'm really enjoying it. It feels like overall there is a certain desire/capacity for it, and if that is getting used up at work, so be it, if not, then it fills up outside of work hours.

Either way, each to their own. Some people would probably love to spend more time coding or on other hobbies but have other commitments like family to consider.

This means I will need to update the app when the certificate changes on the server, i.e. it has expired and needs to be renewed.
Re:Today is Ubuntu's 20th Anniversary on Monday October 21, 2024 @09:28AM (#41903947)
Yes I remember doing the same. I'd probably be about 12 years old, and my dad asked "What is this Ubuntu thing you got in the mail?", even now he asks me about Ubuntu.

Maybe an extension of monkey news, it could be cat news
I googled "battery cascade events", and this comment was the top result.
Could the video feed be recorded from the 911 side and be admissible in court?
Re:Ask HN: Is Google deliberately breaking Firefox? on Thursday June 20, 2024 @05:08AM (#40736543)
> Every team has a mountain of bugs screaming for their attention and a director losing their mind over AI.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

This is something I have been thinking about a lot since moving from programming into management. Some sort of device to measure the data on this would be really interesting, if only just to see that other people in the same position experience the same thing.
Re:One year of solo dev, wrapping up the grant-funded work on Wednesday June 19, 2024 @07:07AM (#40727081)
I have solved bugs by thinking in the shower - completely removed from technology for a short period of time can be helpful.
I have been using Temu recently for electronic components. There are some reasonable value kits of resistors, LEDs, breadboards, etc that I use in my workshop.

How many of us are currently distracted checking HN rather than concentrating on our work?
Re:WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight on Thursday September 28, 2023 @12:27PM (#37691960)
I did something similar on an easyJet flight, I wrote a little Python script to save the altitude and speed data from the free WiFi. They have a cool 3D WebGL rendering of the plane in the air like Flight Simulator, but the satellite imagery was really low res.
Re:J. G. Ballard’s Brilliant, “Not Good” Writing on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @05:47AM (#37672430)
I got towards the end of High Rise and then didn't finish it, I never really thought about why (other than more interesting books on my shelves), but this makes sense.
