Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Thursday October 29, 2026 @07:11PM (#50297574)
BTC has ~26% less purchasing power than it had at the beginning of 2026. I’m not sure its volatility is a win.
Article claims OpenAI found this in February, but I don’t think that’s correct. I think Google made a change to the Brotli source code in February that fixes the issue, but hadn’t realized it was a security issue and therefore hadn’t cut a release.

So actually 3 days ago.

My iPhone 13 has all those certs blocked.
> Universities should be investing in that kind of infrastructure, and it's shameful that they're not already experts.

Do you also expect universities to have an archived version of every article and book their professors cite?

+1, in this case, the hackers exploited a CVE in PeopleSoft that had a published patch. The contractors just didn't apply the patch. https://www.reuters.com/technology/accenture-contractor-remo...

How is Apple supposed to distinguish an unlocked phone from an unlocked stolen phone?

Re:Things to know if you get cancer in 2026 on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @06:36PM (#50096458)
Between November 2024 and January 2025, I visited liver surgeons at 4 different hospitals in 4 different states and got 3 different opinions on what was the correct next step for my cancer treatment.

I don’t regret it.

The page literally says

> AI controls — allow, restrict or disable AI tools

So the answer is yes, no need for making up a cynical answer.

A response to App Engine 18 years after its release?
Re:Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf] on Sunday October 11, 2026 @11:29AM (#50044345)
I think it is more disconnected in thinking people want to understand the mechanism. As a stage IV cancer patient, I’ve met many people who decide not to continue treatment with approved drugs due to side effects. The notion that every cancer patient will do everything possible to stay alive isn’t true. Most people have a breaking point.
You should be concerned if you have 100+ psi water pressure. Anything above 70 is atypical for a residence.

Better for both sides. They clearly have different visions for what an OS should do.
Re:Rust Port of TypeScript (Tsc) on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @10:08PM (#50001190)
why would that be important? Having a typescript compiler in wasm seems like a pretty niche need.

That’s not true.

1. This wasn’t a strike on a single data center, it was strikes on many data centers.

2. Since that interview, AWS has started selling versions of their storage that isn’t redundant. It is not surprising that when AWS sells non-redundant storage that some data is not recoverable.

She gave people medical test results that were incorrect. Say what you want about PE, the medical diagnostics firms they own provide accurate test results to patients.

100%, author lives in Canada and the phrasing has the British heritage of Canadian English.
Re:AWS Acquires DuckDB on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @08:40PM (#49457911)
They do, they’re TPMs and PMs. If you’re a development team at Amazon stressing over MBRs, you’ve failed to give those people the tools to pull important metrics themselves.
Re:Stripe Clinches over $7B Deal to Buy AI Firm OpenRouter on Sunday August 16, 2026 @06:13PM (#49324272)
Yeah, Amazon didn’t let its low margin retail business prevent them from taking high margins in AWS. I’m not sure why it is assumed Stripe would stay low margin.

> Which sort of affirms the mantra, "If you can't prove causation, try to prove correlation."

There’s already tons of correlation published for semaglutide lowering rates of dementia. This study is an effort at helping find the mechanism beyond the generally also known correlation that losing weight lowers rates of dementia.

> This is a Novo Nordisk-funded study focusing on predictive biomarkers rather than real-world dementia cases

You act like all this is hidden, but the title of the article and the list of authors makes this self-evident.

> Novo Nordisk's actual dedicated clinical trials for Alzheimer's completely failed to show that semaglutide stops cognitive decline

Sure, but the EVOKE studies were focused on something that could be sold as a product covered by insurance: semaglutide to those who had already developed Alzheimer’s. It is widely agreed the trial failed because it was a population already diagnosed with dementia. There’s lots of studies not funded by Novo that show semiglutatide has reduced the incidence of dementia in the diabetes population. Novo knows that running a general study on whether semaglutide reduces dementia in a non-diagnosed population is useless to their bottom line because insurance will never pay for everyone to take the drug.

There were woot offs 20 years ago. Flash sales are not some new scaling issue.

I had an interesting internal debate the other day about whether farm fields were more natural than fields of solar panels. (Ignore fields that have both for now). To me, a tilled field that is being chemically fertilized and tilled is at this point just as far removed from the former native state.
Both halves of the title are true statements.

What security issue? Many hotel elevators already have cameras.

Re:Everyone Should Know SIMD on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @10:23PM (#49016051)
I always must ask, why isn’t your compiler doing this for you? I know they often aren’t because I’ve seen speed ups from writing SIMD or using the vector functions in MKL, but this is something I really think the compilers should do for us in the simple case.
The bun team made no mention of compile times in their post. The author of this post points to other work by bun that was hardly making a big fuss. It was just a Twitter post about parallelizing some things to make builds faster.
How is this relevant? No one shot at the plane.
